Sunset at St. Marys

Some history

The competition was founded as the FA Premier League in February 1992 following the decision of clubs in the Football League First Division to break away from the Football League, founded in 1888. One of the main aims was to take advantage of lucrative television rights.

This meant a break-up of the Football League that had operated until then with four divisions. The newly formed Premier League would operate with a single division and the Football League with three. There was to be no change in competition format; the same number of teams competed in the top flight, and promotion and relegation between the Premier League and the new First Division remained the same as the old First and Second Divisions.

Some stats and records

Most titles - Manchester United (13)

Across the old First Division and Premier League, Manchester United have won 20 Premier League titles. The first in the 'new' competition was in 1993 and their last was 2013. They haven't won the trophy since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

Most goals - Alan Shearer (260)

The former England forward scored 112 goals with Blackburn Rovers and 148 goals with Newcastle United. Despite his incredible goal scoring record, he only managed one Premier League title. This was with Blackburn in 1995.

Most Appearances - Gareth Barry (652)

During an eventful career, Barry played for Aston Villa, Manchester City, Everton and West Brom. He scored 53 goals in those 652 appearances.
