PL: Everton boost survival hopes

Everton 1 - 0 Manchester United

Everton picked up a priceless victory in their battle to avoid relegation as a poor Manchester United were beaten.

The Toffees were plunged into crisis when they lost at fellow strugglers Burnley in midweek to leave them facing the prospect of dropping into the bottom three this weekend if results went against them.

In a game low on quality but high in tension, Everton's victory came courtesy of Anthony Gordon's 27th-minute drive, which took a heavy deflection off United captain Harry Maguire to leave keeper David de Gea wrong-footed.

Everton keeper Jordan Pickford made two early saves from Marcus Rashford and a vital late block from Cristiano Ronaldo. However, there was rarely any sense of siege as United lacked urgency. They failed to break through. This was another blow to their hopes of making the Champions League.

Manchester Goalkeeper David de Gea said his side are not good enough. He told BT Sport:"We're not good enough, for sure. It's going to be very difficult now to be in the top four. We don't score, we don't even create proper chances to score."

"We knew before today Everton were struggling and how difficult it was going to be - they were tired, they were nervous, but they keep going and keep fighting. They had more desire than us, which is not acceptable. It's very sad to lose today."

Everton's Anthony Gordon was delighted with the result and performance. He told the Everton website

"It's a massive win from a really tough game, They've got so many good players at the top end of the pitch, so they were always going to have chances and make it difficult.

"The Burnley game was a big disappointment in midweek but we knew we had to pick ourselves up and go again - against Manchester United, who are one of the biggest clubs in world football.  That shows our character.

"But it is also only one win. We've done that plenty, now it's about being consistent and carrying on those performances. "
