PL: Newcastle regret missed chances against Manchester United

Newcastle United 1 - 1 Manchester United

Edinson Cavani came off the bench to score an equaliser for Manchester United and ruin Newcastle's hopes of a priceless second league win of the season.

The striker was introduced after a  poor first half from the visitors, during which they conspired to partly gift Allan Saint-Maximin the opening goal.

Cavani immediately added a threat to the blunt attack. He side-footed one effort wide before finding the net at the third time of asking with a poked shot from inside the box.

It was cruel on Newcastle. They defended with determination and counter-attacked with intensity to produce their finest display of the season at a loud and passionate St James' Park. However, the Geordie faithful would have to ask a rather key question. Why can't they put in that level of performance every week?

Newcastle fans before they face Manchester United

For Manchester United, it was another poor performance in a season of poor performances. Where do they go from here? Let's have a look at some of the best comments from around the football world.

The social media view

The Newcastle United Twitter account posted the thoughts of Eddie Howe: ""Desperately disappointed not to win. I thought we were tactically excellent. We defended really well in partnerships and we were good on transitions. We created the chances to get that second goal which would have been crucial in the end.

One Newcastle fan offered his thoughts on where they go from here: "Good performance marred by poor finishing.Signing Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingaard, Ross Berkley and Jonathan David in January along with Sven Botman will surely help avoid relegation."

For Manchester United fans, their perspective will be less positive. They did however see a good performance from goalscorer Edinson Cavani. Their song for him is fantastic.

Another United fan was really unhappy with the display. He tweeted: "Everyone is targeting Ralf Rangnick for the poor performance, United aren’t equipped for this style of play, it’s not Ralf’s fault, it’s literally down to the players I’m afraid, no agendas, no singling out, no hate, just facts, sorry if you can’t take the truth."
