UEL: Sevilla win tight first leg

Sevilla 1 - 0 West Ham United West Ham's hopes of reaching the next round of the Europa League hang in the balance after they fell to a narrow first-leg defeat in Sevilla. Munir El Haddadi scored the only goal for the home side, sweeping in from Marcos Acuna's free-kick on the hour mark. For most of the game, David Moyes' West Ham side had more than held their own in their first European knockout tie since 1981. We take a one-goal lead to London. Michail Antonio then missed his kick with the follow up from close range. Vlasic also saw Bounou tip a low driven effort around the post. Tomas Soucek then tested the home goalkeeper. Manuel Lanzini also saw his close-range effort blocked as the London club tried to breach the mean Sevilla defence. An exciting Europa League tie also saw the

Reaction to Chelsea announcement: 10/03/22

Image
This is all the reaction from the ongoing situation at Chelsea A story on the BBC website reads:  Roman Abramovich's attempt to sell Chelsea has been halted after the oligarch was sanctioned by the UK government as part of its response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The Russian put the European champions up for sale after the threat of sanctions was raised in Parliament. The freezing of Abramovich's assets, which include Chelsea, means the club cannot sell further match tickets. Football finance expert Kieran Maguire told BBC Radio 5 Live: “In the short term, it’s to a large extent business as usual. Chelsea will be able to pay wages due at the end of March and will have other overheads.  "The government will have been working with the Premier League to try to ensure that there is no disruption as far as the remainder of the season. Ultimately it’s a sideshow given what is happening in Ukraine." The Chelsea Supports Trust released this statement. The CST imp

UCL: Benzema leads Real Madrid fightback

Image
Real Madrid 3 -  1 Paris Saint Germain (3-2 on aggregate) Karim Benzema scored an incredible second-half hat-trick as Real Madrid produced a stirring fightback at the Bernabeu to reach the Champions League quarter-finals at the expense of PSG, Kylian Mbappe's first-half goal had given the French side a deserved two-goal aggregate lead. This looked to have put Mauricio Pochettino's side well on course for the last eight. However, a mistake by PSG's Gianluigi Donnarumma proved the catalyst for a dramatic recovery, with Benzema turning home after the Italian dawdled in possession. Luka Modric's intricate pass made Benzema's second as he levelled the tie against a panicked PSG. AS the visitors attempted to regroup, Benzema drove a low effort into the bottom right corner seconds after the restart to settle the tie. Will PSG ever win the Champions League? And after reaching the final and semi-finals in consecutive seasons, this felt like a backwards step for an expe

UCL: Bayern thrash Red Bull Salzburg

Image
Bayern Munich 7 - 1 FC Red Bull Salzburg Robert Lewandowski scored a hat-trick inside the opening 23 minutes as Bayern Munich thrashed Red Bull Salzburg to qualify for the next round of the Champions League. The Poland captain confidently stroked home two penalties inside 21 minutes. He was twice recklessly brought down by Salzburg defender Maximilian Wober, the second confirmed after a VAR review. The first spot-kick was Lewandowski's 40th goal of the season in all competitions. He added his third after chasing down an attempted clearance from visiting goalkeeper Philipp Kohn. It is the first time a Champions League hat-trick has been completed as early as the 23rd minute. However, it is not the quickest treble in the competition. This is a record held by Bafetimbi Gomis following his three goals in eight minutes for Lyon in a 7-1 win over Dinamo Zagreb.  More Champions League news Salzburg had early opportunities with Nicolas Capaldo and Nicolas Seiwald both guilty of failing

FA Cup: Forest progress after all Championship tie

Image
Nottingham Forest 2 -  1 Huddersfield Town Forest came from behind to beat Championship rivals Huddersfield Town. They have set up a home FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool. Tom Lees' opening goal came moments after Forest's Sam Surridge thought he had scored on his first start - only to be denied by an offside flag. Surridge's side-footed effort did draw his side level before Ryan Yates nodded home to complete the fightback. Forest have not made the last eight of the FA Cup since 1996. Huddersfield, who have not made the quarter-finals since 1972, were on an long unbeaten run across all competitions. They had knocked out Premier League Burnley in an earlier round.  --- You can watch the highlights of the match in the video below. Goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was then at fault for Son Heung-min's second. Matt Doherty then set Harry Kane free to put the game out of sight eight minutes before half-time. Any slim hopes of an Everton revival were snuffed out when substitute Sergio Reguilon scored with his first touch at the far post seconds after the restart. Kane added the fifth after 55 minutes, meeting Doherty's perfect cross with a crisp left-footed volley. The im

Scotland: Celtic win at Livingston

Image
Livingston 1 - 3 Celtic Celtic convincingly overcame their Livingston to restore their three-point Scottish Premiership lead, says manager Ange Postecoglou. Captain Callum McGregor missed a penalty before Daizen Maeda headed in the opener from a disputed corner. A Nicky Devlin own goal and James Forrest's fine finish made it 3-0. Andrew Shinnie's close-range reply couldn't deny Celtic a first win at Livingston since 2007. The away support created a fantastic atmosphere throughout the game One Celtic fan told us: "It was a comfortable win. That was something that everyone needed. Onwards and upwards now!" Reaction Livingston manager David Martindale told the media: "I think Celtic were very good and very clinical. I don't think we deserved much more from the game, but with the two decisions leading to goals you feel a little hard done-by. PL: Awful United outclassed by City

Image
Manchester City 4 - 1 Manchester United Manchester United were completely outclassed by Manchester City as the home side maintained control of the Premier League title race with an outstanding display.  City stays six points clear of Liverpool, having played one game more. This victory was arguably even more convincing than the scoreline suggested. United were without Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani, Raphael Varane and Luke Shaw. They found themselves overwhelmed by the quality and intensity of the reigning champions. --- You can watch the highlights of the match in the video below. Footage courtesy of the Manchester City YouTube channel. --- Kevin de Bruyne put City ahead with a crisp early finish then restored their lead before half-time after Jadon Sancho put United level with a precise low strike, the Belgian's second hammered home in a goalmouth scramble.
