Manchester United produced an outstanding display to defeat Liverpool and give manager Erik ten Hag his first Premier League victory at a thunderous Old Trafford.
Ten Hag took the bold decision to drop captain Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo and was rewarded with a performance that lifted the mood of crisis around Manchester United and leave Liverpool still searching for a first win of the season.
Jadon Sancho showed superb control and composure to deservedly put United in front after 16 minutes before Marcus Rashford raced clear to beat Alisson from substitute Anthony Martial's pass eight minutes after the interval.
Mo Salah set up a tense finish when he scrambled in a header with nine minutes left but United survived to give Ten Hag just the sort of triumph he needs to make his mark at Old Trafford.
Against a backdrop of protests
Thousands protested against the ownership of the Glazers before kick-off and the chants continued throughout the game, United's fans then rallied behind a performance of fierce intensity.
One Manchester United fan told us: "That result doesn't change anything. We still want them out."
The anger in our opinion is more than justified. The Glazers have destroyed a romantic part of Manchester United and it could take them a generation to truly recover.
Casemiro signs
To add to what was a dramatic night, United announced the signing of Casemiro before the match. The midfielder said: “The opportunity to start a new challenge at Manchester United and in the Premier League is extremely exciting.
“I have worked with many great managers in my career and, having met with Erik and heard his ideas, I can’t wait to work closely with him, his staff and my new team-mates in the coming years.
Liverpool look poor
Jordan Chamberlain, Empire of the Kop, said: "Liverpool look mentally and physically drained just three games into the season. Monday's defeat by Manchester United was Liverpool's worst performance in front of a crowd since the 3-0 loss at Watford back in 2020."
