News: Ronaldo wants to leave Manchester United

There has been a shocking story coming out of Old Trafford

Cristiano Ronaldo wants Manchester United to let him leave the club if they receive an appropriate offer for him this summer.

The forward returned to Old Trafford from Juventus last summer.

Despite finishing the season as United's top scorer, the overall campaign was a disappointment. United finished sixth in the Premier League and missed out on qualification for the Champions League. That means Ronaldo faces playing in the Europa League for the first time in his career.

It is not something he is viewing with relish, and the five-time Ballon d'Or winner feels there could be more attractive options available at this stage in his career.

Manchester United expect Ronaldo to stay despite links with Premier League rivals Chelsea. He is reportedly anxious to stress he respects United, but he wants to compete for the biggest prizes.

However, United do not regard Ronaldo as a player who is up for sale. While it would be a blow to United's prestige if they were to lose one of the greatest players they have ever had, it would also solve a few issues for new manager Erik ten Hag.

Ronaldo allegedly clashed with Harry Maguire over the United captaincy last season. Interim boss Ralf Rangnick's desire to implement a pressing game was apparently thwarted by Ronaldo.

Ronaldo is also the highest-paid player in the Premier League, and his exit would create more scope within United's summer transfer budget.

Despite this story, it is expected that Ronaldo will return to the club for pre-season training this week and he should be on their pre-season tour.

Reaction

The announcement created a lot of discussion across social media. Let's have a look at some of the best reaction.

Jay on Facebook said: "Completely understand that Cristiano Ronaldo wants to play in the UEFA Champions League and win some trophies before retiring. If he's determined to leave, then Manchester United should sell him because Erik ten Hag needs focused players for this rebuild. Always love Cristiano Ronaldo, but Manchester United comes first."

Barney, editor of the Red News fanzine, added: "I am probably in minority but as a final season I really hope Ronaldo is kept/told to stay. Yes he changes our style of play and what eth will want to play/build over time but he’s moments, it’s one season, he’s goals and could help as we rebuild. Whatever, MUFC life goes on."

The 'We want the Glazers Out Facebook group posted the following:

Selling Ronaldo with no clue about replacing him shows nothing has actually changed.

Where will he be playing football next season?
