Premier League: Late drama at The Emirates

Image
Arsenal 4 - 2 Leicester City The Gunners snatched a thrilling victory over Leicester at the Emirates Stadium with two stoppage-time goals. There was a fantastic atmosphere before the match.  An own goal from Wilfred Ndidi in the 94th minute, followed by a close-range finish from Kai Havertz deep into injury time , crushed Leicester's hopes of an unlikely point after they had clawed back from two goals down in the second half. Gabriel Martinelli had put the Gunners ahead in the first half with a composed finish from Jurrien Timber’s cross, before setting up Leandro Trossard for a second goal right on the brink of half-time. Leicester barely threatened in the first half, managing only a single touch in Arsenal’s box before the break. However, they pulled one back just over a minute into the second half when James Justin’s header from Facundo Buonanotte’s free-kick deflected off Havertz and into the net. Justin then levelled the score in spectacular fashion, lashing home a swervin

FA Cup: Blackburn shock Leicester

Image
Leicester City 1 - 2 Blackburn Rovers Championship promotion contenders Blackburn Rovers caused an FA Cup fifth-round upset by stunning 2021 cup winners Leicester City. Backburn's dynamic display, in which they should have scored more goals, gave them a place in the last eight for the first time in eight years. Having been denied by Daniel Iversen's flying save, Tyrhys Dolan curled past Leicester's Danish goalkeeper for the opener. Ryan Hedges then missed a gilt-edged opportunity to double the visiting side's lead at the start of the second period when he failed to hit the target from 10 yards out. This didn't prove costly as Sammie Szmodics wriggled clear to convert Rovers' second in the 52nd minute, while the midfielder also had a goal ruled out for offside. Substitute Kelechi Iheanacho pulled one back for the Foxes by slotting in from close range. However, it wasn't enough. Many fans would have thought there was a good opportunity of a cup run there.

Marcus Rashford scored with the Reds’ first shot of the match in the first half before he added to his tally with another strike following half-time. His countryman Jadon Sancho, who was introduced as a substitute, completed the scoring shortly after the hour mark. The win and performance have got Man United fans very excited. Can they win the title? United's Dalot had missed a great chance when it was only 1-0. Rashford on fire. Is he the best player in the world? They managed this at the last minute. What a moment. This is the only one before the Premier League but we're sure there are many other dramatic title races from the Division One era. Blackburn Rovers and Man United in 1995 A crazy season. This race also went to the last second of the season. Amazingly, both Blackburn and United failed to win on the final day with Blackburn eventually taking the title by a point. It had been

Premier League: Bournemouth carry on impressive form

Image
AFC Bournemouth 2 - 1 Leicester City Gary O'Neil enhanced his credentials to become the next permanent Bournemouth manager after leading his side to victory over Leicester City.  Since succeeding Scott Parker, O'Neil has overseen a five-game unbeaten run. This fine win comes after another outstanding comeback against Nottingham Forest last month. Highlights from  AFC Bournemouth - YouTube Although he plays it down when asked, it is increasingly hard to ignore the body of work he is creating at Bournemouth. In terms of the match, Patson Daka's opener gave Leicester some early control, but they failed to capitalise and had no answer to a rousing reply from Bournemouth in the second half. Philip Billing thrashed home a superb volley to level the scores before Ryan Christie touched in Dominic Solanke's knock-down five minutes later to complete the revival. Jamie Vardy came on from the bench to inject urgency into Leicester's play. He went close with a couple of cro

UCL: Spurs lose in Lisbon (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) Highlights from  Tottenham Hotspur - YouTube   Son Heung-min ended his goal drought with a scintillating 13-minute hat-trick as Tottenham ruthlessly punished Leicester's latest defensive horror show. The South Korea striker responded to Antonio Conte's decision to drop him to the bench after a barren start to the season by coming on to curl home two fantastic strikes and slot home a late third. Spurs had initially trailed to Youri Tielemans' early penalty but quickly took advantage of the Foxes' failings at set-pieces as Harry Kane and Eric Dier nodded home from corners to turn the game around. James Maddison's stunning first-time finish briefly drew Leicester level again, but Wilfried Ndidi's mistake allowed Rodrigo Bentancur to steer Tott

Premier League: Chelsea sign Wesley Fofana

Image
Chelsea have made another signing. Will this be the last big announcement from the club before the transfer window closes? Chelsea have signed French centre-back Wesley Fofana from Leicester City on a seven-year deal for a fee in the region of £70m. France Under-21 international Fofana has made 37 Premier League appearances since joining Leicester from French side Saint-Etienne in 2020. He was restricted to just seven league games during the 2021-22 campaign after breaking his leg in pre-season. Picture - Fofana in action for Leicester against Chelsea last season. Credit -  Alex Hannam | Flickr   This was one of his last moments for the club. It was a fairly defeat against Arsenal. Fofana's initial fee makes him the 12th most expensive Premier League signing, but he will drop to 13th when Manchester United complete the £81.3m signing of Antony. The Fofana deal takes Premier League clubs' record summer transfer window expenditure to almost £1.7 billion. A big % of this h

UECL: Leicester progress against Randers

Randers FC 1 - 3 Leicester City (2-7 on aggregate) James Maddison scored two beauties as Leicester made light work of Danish side Randers with a 7-2 rout on aggregate to reach the last 16 of the Europa Conference League. Brendan Rodgers' men came into this knockout stage play-off round after finishing third in their Europa League group, but navigated the tie with few issues. Holding a 4-1 lead from the first leg, it took Leicester just 100 seconds to extend their advantage as Harvey Barnes broke clear and curled a delightful finish into the far corner. PL: Leicester City get revenge on Liverpool

Image
Leicester City 1 - 0 Liverpool Ademola Lookman scored the only goal of the match as Leicester City beat Liverpool. This leaves the Reds six points off the top of the Premier League table. Liverpool's best chances came in the first half when Mohamed Salah had a penalty saved by Kasper Schmeichel and the Egyptian headed the rebound off the bar. Sadio Mane then wasted a couple of chances for Jurgen Klopp's side. The 2020 Premier League champions were made to pay by the hosts in the 59th minute. Lookman, with only his fourth touch after coming on, took Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's pass in his stride, beat Liverpool's Joel Matip and fired a shot past Alisson. This was Leicester's only shot on target. Leicester hung on despite the relentless late Liverpool pressure. This all came just six days after blowing a 3-1 lead to lose on penalties against the same opposition in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup. This result was all the more remarkable given the home side's

PL: Manchester City 6-3 Leicester City

Image
It was a thrilling Boxing Day afternoon at Etihad Stadium Manchester City clinched a ninth successive Premier League win in thrilling style. They have now moved six points clear at the top of the table. It looked like City had wrapped up the points after only 25 minutes as they led a depleted Foxes side 4-0, with a penalty apiece by Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling in addition to strikes from Kevin de Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan. Leicester had other ideas and came back thrillingly. They scored three goals in the space of 10 second-half minutes from James Maddison, Ademola Lookman and Kelechi Iheanacho giving them hope. A header by Aymeric Laporte restored order and gave the home side breathing space. Sterling's second goal made sure of the points late on. Pep Guardiola was talking about the Manchester City website about the remarkable second half: “No (I didn’t expect such a second half comeback). "But even in the first half, we spoke about this at half-time, it was 4-0 and w

Premier League: Leicester City 4 - 2 Manchester United

Leicester City increased the pressure on  Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as they ran out deserved winners against Manchester United in a thriller at the King Power Stadium. At one point, United had threatened to steal a point from a dreadful performance but the Foxes rallied to secure their best win of an indifferent start to the season. Watch the highlights from the match courtesy of Leicester's YouTube channel. More thoughts from the match It is inevitable that much focus will be placed on the failings of Manchester United but Leicester City deserve massive credit for a performance that saw them back to their best after a relatively poor start to the Premier League season.  The presence of Jonny Evans amongst the defence provided reassurance and quality while Iheanacho put in a great performance against Harry Maguire. The United captain put in a error-strewn display on his return from injury. Where next for Ole? Pressure has certainly increased on the United manager. They now have a hug

EPL: Brighton & Hove Albion 2 - 1 Leicester City

Brighton's great start to the Premier League season continued as they held off a late Leicester City rally to move up the table. The away side thought they had rescued a point in the closing stages but Ademola Lookman and Wilfred Ndidi both saw goals chalked off for Harvey Barnes straying offside.
