PL: Man United battle to a much-needed victory

Manchester United 2 - 0 Brighton & Hove Albion

There was a massive sense of relief at Old Trafford as Manchester United battled to a much-needed win over Brighton.

The three points have their hopes of a top-four finish a huge boost. You can watch the highlights of the match in the video below. Footage from the Manchester United YouTube channel. Manchester United - YouTube

Key Talking Points

United's goals came in the second half and were scored by Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes. Brighton's Lewis Dunk was sent off for denying a goal-scoring opportunity. Did VAR and the referee eventually get to the correct decision?

One Twitter user said: "Dermot is 100% correct. This is where VAR is needed and works so well. It's easy to see why in real-time on the pitch it's given as a yellow card, but once VAR has the luxury of looking at it again and stopping the video., you can see that it's a clear red card."

Reaction from United

One United fan told us: "It wasn't pretty to watch at times, but we needed that win. I genuinely think we'll comfortably finish in the Champions League places, due to a lack of consistency elsewhere."

Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick told the media: "First half was Mr Hyde, second half Dr Jekyll and for a change it (the result) was different. In the end it was important to get the three points against an in form team. Brighton are very possession based, full of confidence and we had to take more risks in the second half, it paid off.

"We scored the goal and got the red card for Lewis Dunk with a brilliant interception from Anthony Elanga. It should have been 3-0, 4-0 after 75 minutes but there is a bit of lack of assuredness in front of goal."

Missed opportunity for Brighton?

Brighton manager Graham Potter also spoke with the media after the match: "We are frustrated, we had large periods of the game but we did not start the second half well, gave the ball away and they punished us."

One Brighton fan replied to the above tweet: "To be honest we lost because of our mistakes not that United were good or anything."
