Premier League: Everton survive after tense final day

 Everton 1 - 0 AFC Bournemouth

Everton will extend their unbroken 69-year stay in the English top flight.

Last week's dramatic draw at Wolves ultimately gave the Goodison Park side the advantage on the final day. Premier League: Everton secure dramatic draw against Wolves (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com)

Sean Dyche's side came into the contest with their fate in their own hands, knowing victory would be enough to keep them in the Premier League. However, the nervy hosts struggled to break down their opponents in a tense first half.

Abdoulaye Doucoure's stunning strike earned his side a 1-0 win over Bournemouth as they avoided relegation on the final day of the season.

With supporters getting increasingly desperate, and results not going their way elsewhere, the Evertonians started to fear the worst. Doucoure then stepped up with what proved to be the crucial winner in the 57th minute to lift the roof off Goodison Park.

They held on for over 40 minutes, a period that included 10 minutes of stoppage time. They relied on some last-ditch defending and a fine late save from England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to drag them over the line.

The best fan reaction

Sarah O'Leary was stood on the Gwladys Street End. She told us: "That was a fantastic result in the end. We have lacked a decent striker for most of the season, we cannot rely on Calvin-Lewin. We need a massive change in next season and can't rely on the last few games of the season. Well done to Everton and Dyche. We should have faith in him, as he has changed the performance."

James Weston, another Evertoninian, added: "As an Everton supporter for 60 years, I believe this Everton squad, assembled at a massive cost, is one of the poorest I have ever seen watching the mighty blues."

Callum Gamble was pleased with the result but was ultimately very critical of the club's direction. He said: "To be fair, the owner has put his money where his mouth is, but he has been poorly advised and has to step aside. He shouldn't be involved in football decisions. If he does not trust them, they should not be there. I would be surprised if nothing comes out of the club in terms of resignations."

Leicester win but face a season in the Championship

Leicester City 2 - 1 West Ham

Leicester City's nine-year stay in the Premier League came to an end as they were relegated in agonising fashion despite beating West Ham on the final day of the season.

The Foxes' fate was out of their hands heading into the last round of fixtures, and that Everton win against Bournemouth meant the 2015-16 title winners slipped into the Championship.

Frank, a Leicester City fan, told us: "The problems started over 12 months ago and there is far too much deadwood in the squad. We had a chance to build on the more recent FA Cup success but failed to do that. It has been an incredible nine years though."

A terrible last day for Leeds

Leeds United 1 -4 Tottenham Hotspur

Leeds United were also relegated from the Premier League as they lost their final game to Spurs.

They needed a win to stand any chance of preserving their Premier League status. However, the home side trailed inside the opening two minutes through Harry Kane's excellent finish. A second goal from Kane alongside strikes from Porro and Lucas Moura, with what is essentially his last kick for the club, gave the away side a comfortable 4-1 win.

This was the statement from the Leeds Board after their relegation was confirmed. The statement starts by saying: "Everyone connected with Leeds United is deeply disappointed by the club’s relegation back to the Sky Bet Championship, after three seasons in the Premier League."
