Are Nottingham Forest heading to the Champions League?

Image
Everton 0 - 2 Nottingham Forest Nottingham Forest capped off the year in style with a convincing win over a lacklustre Everton, climbing to second in the Premier League table. Author - Sarah W  Nuno Espirito Santo’s side continues to capture the imagination with their impressive performances, emerging as one of the season’s biggest surprises and threatening to shake up the established order at the top of the league. With Arsenal not playing until Wednesday, Forest’s victory at Goodison Park ensured they ended the day in second place, behind league leaders Liverpool, who stormed to a 5-0 win over West Ham to extend their lead to eight points. Chris Wood played a pivotal role in both of Forest’s goals, scoring his 11th league goal of the season with a sublime finish before setting up Morgan Gibbs-White for a composed second-half strike. Wood had already given Everton’s defence a couple of warnings—first with a long-range volley that went wide and then with a header over the ba...

Crisis continues at Manchester City

Manchester City 1 - 1 Everton Erling Haaland saw his second-half penalty saved by Jordan Pickford as Manchester City’s struggles continued with a lacklustre Premier League draw against Everton at the Etihad Stadium. Author - Macca Pep Guardiola’s side, once an unstoppable force, now find themselves in uncharted waters, having won just once in their last 13 matches across all competitions. The result leaves the reigning champions in sixth place, five points behind Arsenal in fourth and a daunting 14 points adrift of league leaders Liverpool. City came close to a dream start in the third minute when Josko Gvardiol’s towering header struck the post. Their early dominance eventually paid off in the 14th minute, as Bernardo Silva capitalised on Jeremy Doku’s pass, squeezing a deflected shot past Jarrad Branthwaite into the far corner. Phil Foden nearly doubled the lead, setting up Silva in the box, but the Portuguese midfielder’s first-time effort went wide. Everton, however, made their...

Chelsea held by determined Everton

Everton 0 - 0 Chelsea The blue side of Merseyside did the red side of Merseyside a huge favour by holding Chelsea to a draw at Goodison Park Author - Sarah W  Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca dismissed talk earlier in the week about his team being Premier League title contenders – and based on this result, he may have been right. While the Italian may have privately harboured different thoughts, Chelsea’s eight-match winning streak across all competitions came to an end, delivering a blow to their hopes of reclaiming the league trophy for Stamford Bridge. Star performer Cole Palmer, who stole the show with four goals – including a stunning first-half hat-trick – in a 6-0 demolition of Everton back in April, struggled to make an impact this time. He dragged an early shot wide and set up Jackson for a glaring miss. Arsenal held by determined Everton

Arsenal 0 - 0 Everton Arteta side were held by a determined Everton side resulting in another dent in their title bid.  Author - DJ Arsenal controlled 76% of the possession and registered 13 shots but failed to break down a resolute Everton defence, which managed just two shots all game. Everton's first chance came as early as the sixth minute and arguably presented the best opportunity of the match. Abdoulaye Doucoure broke through on goal but hesitated, allowing Gabriel to block his angled effort. From then on, Arsenal monopolised the ball but struggled to carve out clear chances. Captain Martin Ødegaard dragged one shot wide and saw another deflected effort clawed away by Jordan Pickford. England's number one was in inspired form, making a brilliant reflex save to deny Bukayo Saka early in the second half. Despite Arsenal's relentless efforts, they couldn’t find the winning goal. When Andy Johnson and Tim Cahill were the pride of Everton

Image
We're having a throwback to September 2006. This was a time when the mood at Goodison Park was very different. When the 'big clubs' visited Everton at that point, the Toffees usually expected to cause a shock. Author - Sarah W  Do you remember when Everton played Liverpool in 2006? Andy Johnson and Tim Cahill were outstanding for the Toffees. eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com/search/label... youtu.be/lMQtkPJd634?... [image or embed] — European Super Football ( @superfootball.bsky.social ) 6 December 2024 at 14:18 This resounding 3-0 victory over Liverpool in the September 2006 Merseyside derby was their biggest derby triumph in 42 years. It was achieved with a clinical performance and solid defensive organisation. Let's have a closer look at what happened. Tim Cahill opened the scoring after 23 minutes, capitalising on a loose ball to slot home from close range. Just 12 minutes later, Andrew Johnson doubled Everton’s lead. He pounced on a defensive error by Jamie C...

Everton pile pressure on Wolves manager

Image
Everton 4 - 0 Wolves Everton ended a five-game winless streak in the Premier League with a resounding victory over a dismal Wolves side at Goodison Park, ramping up the pressure on under-fire manager Gary O’Neil. Author - Craig H from GMCR Football  Both managers were under the spotlight going into Wednesday’s clash after their teams had each shipped four goals at the weekend. While Wolves fans turned on O’Neil, especially after Craig Dawson's two own goals, Everton boss Sean Dyche enjoyed watching his side deliver a much-needed dominant display, lifting them five points clear of the relegation zone. After four games without a goal, Everton made the perfect start. Ashley Young’s sublime 25-yard free-kick bent around the wall and nestled beautifully into the bottom-right corner, ending their scoring drought in style. Elsewhere in the Premier League Six minutes later, it looked like Everton had doubled their lead when James Tarkowski powered in a header from Dwight McNeil’s cro...

Man United ease to win over Everton

Image
Manchester United 4 - 0 Everton Ruben Amorim secured his first Premier League victory in style as Manchester United cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win over struggling Everton at Old Trafford. Author - Olivia T After a 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town in Amorim's league debut last weekend and a midweek Europa League win over Bodo/Glim t, the Portuguese boss saw his side find their feet on Sunday. Despite a shaky start, they ultimately delivered a clinical performance, with Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee both bagging two goals apiece. It was a match to forget for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, who had been a summer transfer target for United. His misfortune played a key role in the home side’s opening goals. Rashford’s low strike took a deflection off Branthwaite's boot to give United the lead, and moments later, the centre-back was caught dithering on the ball. This allowed Amad Diallo to steal possession and set up Bruno Fernandes, who teed up Zirkzee for a composed fi...

Premier League: Everton squander another lead

Image
Aston Villa 3 - 2 Everton Jhon Duran’s stunning long-range strike secured a dramatic Premier League comeback win for Aston Villa, as Everton collapsed from a 2-0 lead for the second game in a row. Everton were left reeling, having already thrown away a two-goal advantage in their previous match against Bournemouth, and Saturday brought a painful sense of déjà vu as they squandered another lead, leaving them still without a point this season. A closer look at what happened Villa started strongly, with Ollie Watkins’ header cleared off the line, but it was Everton who struck first. Dwight McNeil dispossessed former teammate Amadou Onana – much to the delight of the travelling fans – before surging forward and firing a precise shot into the bottom corner. Despite their struggles and lack of confidence, Sean Dyche’s side extended their lead in the 27th minute when Dominic Calvert-Lewin rose highest to powerfully head home. However, Villa quickly responded. Ex-Everton full-back Luca...

Premier League: Nightmare ending for Everton

Image
Everton 2 - 3 AFC Bournemouth Bournemouth pulled off a remarkable late comeback, overturning a two-goal deficit after the 86th minute to stun Everton in a Premier League clash at Goodison Park. Everton had looked set to secure their first win of the season, and their first in August in three years, after taking a deserved lead. But they fell apart spectacularly in the dying moments, as Bournemouth scored three goals in nine chaotic minutes, sparking jubilant celebrations among their players and travelling fans. Antoine Semenyo’s close-range finish from Dango Ouattara’s cross to make it 2-1 seemed like nothing more than a consolation for the visitors, who had been trailing to second-half goals from Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Instead, it marked the start of a dramatic collapse from Everton. Two minutes into stoppage time, Luis Sinisterra set up Bournemouth captain Lewis Cook to equalise, leaving Everton clinging on for a point. But the Toffees crumbled further, sufferi...

EFL Cup: Everton nerves eased

Image
Everton 3 - 0 Doncaster Rovers Everton gave their fans a much-needed lift after a disappointing start to the season, as Iliman Ndiaye marked his full debut with a superb solo goal in a convincing 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Doncaster. Following a 3-0 loss at home to Brighton in their Premier League opener and a dismal 4-0 defeat at Tottenham, the Toffees couldn’t afford another slip-up against their League Two opponents. Here’s how the action unfolded at Goodison Park Grant McCann’s Doncaster side looked like they might pull off an upset, but Everton took the lead early in the second half with Tim Iroegbunam’s first-time strike, which Dwight McNeil claimed to have got a touch on. Everton’s long-awaited first goal of the season was quickly followed by Ndiaye’s moment of magic, as he turned, ran, and finished brilliantly, before Beto sealed a morale-boosting win ahead of their upcoming fixture against Bournemouth. Doncaster, making their first trip to Goodison Park since 1985, started...

Premier League: Concerning signs for Everton

Image
Tottenham Hotspur 4 - 0 Everton Everton's difficult start to the new season worsened with a 4-0 loss at Tottenham, marked by a costly mistake from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Following a 3-0 defeat at home to Brighton on the opening weekend, Sean Dyche's side have now conceded seven goals in their first two games, leaving them rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table without a goal to their name. Tottenham's first goal was unstoppable, with Yves Bissouma unleashing a powerful strike from just outside the box, which crashed in off the underside of the bar in the 14th minute, putting his recent controversy behind him. The match then took a turn for the worse for Everton when Pickford hesitated on a backpass from James Tarkowski, allowing Heung-Min Son to nip in and score into an empty net in the 25th minute. Pickford's mishap encapsulated a dismal first half for the visitors, who managed just one shot on target, a 58th-minute effort from debutant Jesper Lindst...

Premier League: New Brighton boss makes impressive start

Image
Everton 0 - 3 Brighton & Hove Albion Brighton's young manager, Fabian Hurzeler, made an impressive start to his Premier League career, delivering a victory that left Everton's final season at Goodison Park off to a dismal start. Everton, who have called Goodison Park home since 1892, will be relocating to a new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock at the beginning of next season. Everton fans created a fantastic atmosphere before the match. At just 31, Hurzeler became the Premier League's youngest-ever permanent manager, and his Brighton team showed no mercy towards their opponents. The first half was fiercely contested, with tackles flying in from both sides. Everton's Jack Harrison had an early goal disallowed for offside, while Brighton's Joao Pedro struck the post with a powerful low shot. Brighton took the lead through Kaoru Mitoma's simple finish at the back post, following excellent work from debutant Yankuba Minteh, who had been linked with a move to E...

Transfer News: Villa sign Onana

Image
Aston Villa have secured the signing of midfielder Amadou Onana from Everton in a £50m deal. The 22-year-old played every minute of Belgium's Euro 2024 campaign and now has the chance to showcase his talent for Villa in the upcoming Champions League season. Onana joined Everton from Lille for £33m in 2022 and made 72 appearances for the Toffees, netting four goals. He was linked with a move to Arsenal in 2023, and several top clubs were reportedly interested in him this summer. You can see how they announced the transfer in the video below. The footage is from the Aston Villa YouTube account.  Villa manager Unai Emery had been searching for a new defensive midfielder after the club sold Douglas Luiz to Juventus for £42.35m in June. After finishing fourth in the Premier League last season, Villa are bolstering their squad for the challenges of the Champions League in the coming campaign. They have not competed at this elite level since the 1982-83 season, this was right after w...

Transfer News: Everton reject Branthwaite bid from Man United

Image
More transfer news from Old Trafford and Goodison Park Everton have turned down a second offer from Manchester United, this time around £45m, for their defender Jarrad Branthwaite . Last month, the Toffees also rejected a £35m bid from United for the 22-year-old England international. It's believed that United's revised offer included potential additional payments if certain targets were achieved. This still falls short of Everton's valuation. Branthwaite has shone as a left-sided central defender at Goodison Park, playing a crucial role in helping the Merseyside club avoid relegation last season despite two points deductions for breaching financial loss rules. United are eager to bolster their central defence options and have been in talks over Bayern Munich's Matthijs de Ligt , who is currently representing the Netherlands at Euro 2024. With Raphael Varane having left the club, there has been no confirmation yet of a new one-year deal for veteran Northern Ireland ...

Everton: 23/24 Season Review

Image
It was a dramatic 2023/2024 season at Goodison Park The campaign marked Everton's 145th year and their 70th consecutive season in the top tier of English football. They also competed in the FA Cup and the EFL Cup. On 17 November, they were handed a ten-point deduction from their Premier League tally for violating the league's profit and sustainability rules, the largest points deduction in Premier League history. The club appealed the decision, with the appeal scheduled for March 2024.  On 15 January, they were found to have committed another breach of the same rules, prompting an ongoing investigation. On 26 February, the initial ten-point deduction was reduced to six points following the appeal board's decision. On 8 April, the club were again found guilty of a second breach of the profit and sustainability rules, resulting in a further two-point deduction, pending appeal. This made Everton the first club in English top-flight history to receive two separate points d...

Premier League: Chelsea thrash Everton

Image
Chelsea 6 - 0 Everton Cole Palmer moved level with Erling Haaland in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot.  He scored a brilliant four-goals, this took him to a total of 20 goals for the season, and helped Chelsea to an emphatic 6-0 win over Everton.  Nicolas Jackson and young substitute Alfie Gilchrist also scored. There was an unsavoury disagreement between Palmer, Jackson and Noni Madueke over who should take a penalty. A closer look at what happened Chelsea's 6-0 win over a struggling Everton side at Stamford Bridge was completed thanks to a superb performance by Cole Palmer. The attacking midfielder wasted no time in making an impact, scoring twice in the opening 18 minutes of the game.  Palmer's first goal was a stunning curling effort from outside the box, while the second came from a close-range rebound. Palmer scored two more goals in the match, dealing a significant blow to Everton's hopes of avoiding relegation. The England international compl...

Premier League: Potentially a pivotal night in Newcastle

Image
Newcastle United 1 - 1 Everton How important could this point prove to be for Everton? How costly could these two dropped points be in Newcastle's quest for European qualification?  Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored a late penalty to secure a crucial point for Everton in their battle to avoid relegation and draw against Newcastle, who are still vying for a spot in Europe. Alexander Isak scored in the 15th minute for the hosts after receiving a pass from Harvey Barnes, cutting inside Jarrad Branthwaite, and calmly finishing past Jordan Pickford. Dan Burn thought he had scored a goal, but it was disallowed for offside. Isak also had a shot cleared off the line.  Later in the game, Paul Dummett was penalised for wrestling Ashley Young to the ground by having his arm around Young's neck. This gave the visitors a chance to score a late goal. Can Newcastle United qualify for Europe? More news from the Geordie Nation on European Super Football. Referee Tony Harrington had not gi...

Premier League: Everton pay the penalty

Image
Manchester United 2 - 0 Everton Manchester United halted their two-game losing streak by securing victory over Everton at Old Trafford through first-half penalties converted by Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford. https://t.co/qfMpbyVToc pic.twitter.com/7TtUTl4f61 — European Super Football (@ESFootballNews) March 11, 2024 In a peculiar match, Everton became the fifth team in six Premier League games to muster at least 20 shots against Erik ten Hag's side, yet their wastefulness and defensive lapses cost them dearly. Both James Tarkowski and Ben Godfrey received yellow cards for reckless challenges on Alejandro Garnacho. Fernandes calmly dispatched the first penalty, directing a precise low shot to Jordan Pickford's left corner. Despite the skipper passing on the second penalty to Rashford, the latter confidently sent Pickford the wrong way for his seventh goal of the season. Following defeats against Fulham and Manchester City, the win brought United within three points ...

FA Cup: Palace and Everton will go again

Image
Crystal Palace 0 - 0 Everton The FA Cup third round weekend started with a rather boring 0-0 draw between Palace and Everton. The game wasn't without controversy though. Everton have lodged an appeal against the red card given to Dominic Calvert-Lewin during their goalless draw against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup third-round.  If the appeal is unsuccessful, Calvert-Lewin could miss not only the third-round replay but also upcoming Premier League fixtures against Aston Villa and Fulham. The striker is facing a three-match ban due to his dismissal following a sliding challenge on Nathaniel Clyne, as determined by a VAR review during the second half. More VAR news and stories Referee Chris Kavanagh initially did not award a free-kick, but after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor, he deemed there was enough contact with Clyne's shin to warrant Calvert-Lewin's dismissal.
