United fight back to earn a draw at Everton

Image
Everton 2 - 2 Manchester United Manchester United mounted a late fightback before being rescued by VAR, avoiding a deeper crisis with a dramatic draw against Everton at Goodison Park. Author - Olivia T  Stadium - Goodison Park Everton, revitalised under returning manager David Moyes, looked set to continue their resurgence as they dominated the first half, deservedly taking a two-goal lead. United were exposed time and again in those opening 45 minutes. Beto capitalised on a goalmouth scramble to score his fifth goal under Moyes in the 19th minute, before Abdoulaye Doucoure doubled the lead with a towering header. The second goal was one to forget for Harry Maguire. The United defender reacted sluggishly after André Onana had parried Jack Harrison’s shot, allowing Doucoure to rise above him and nod the ball into the net. Everton fans experience new ground for the first time

Image
It was an historic night for Everton fans. Nearly 10,000 Evertonians got their first taste of life at their new stadium as they watched the club’s academy side fall to defeat against Wigan’s youngsters. Author - Sarah W Wigan’s Harrison Rimmer – a lifelong Liverpool fan, no less – etched his name into the history books by scoring the first-ever goal at the new ground. And he didn’t miss the chance to wind up the home crowd, celebrating by holding up six fingers in reference to Liverpool’s six Champions League titles. Cole Simms doubled Wigan’s lead shortly after, before Everton pulled one back late on through a penalty from 16-year-old Ray Robert. Regardless of the defeat for their side, this was an incredible opportunity for those young Everton players. It will be interesting to see how many of them end up playing for the first team at the stadium. Everton edge past Palace to continue momentum

Image
Crystal Palace 1 - 2 Everton After snatching a dramatic late draw against Liverpool thanks to James Tarkowski’s 98th-minute equaliser on Wednesday, Everton arrived in south London full of confidence. Author - Sarah W Stadium - Selhurst Park Despite being under pressure for much of the first half, they took the lead against the run of play when Beto struck just before the break, punishing Crystal Palace for a series of missed chances—including a disallowed Jefferson Lerma header. Palace hit back early in the second half through Jean-Philippe Mateta, who netted his 11th Premier League goal of the season. But with 10 minutes to go, Carlos Alcaraz, on loan from Flamengo, fired home the winner to secure a vital three points for the Toffees. The result lifts David Moyes’ side up to 13th in the table on 30 points, 13 clear of the relegation zone. They are now level with 12th-placed Palace, who sit just ahead on goal difference. Everton fight back in Goodison cauldron

Image
Everton 2 - 2 Liverpool James Tarkowski's last-gasp equaliser secured a well-earned point for Everton in a fiery conclusion to the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park. Authors - Sarah W and William G Stadium - Goodison Park Liverpool seemed poised to extend their lead at the top of the Premier League to nine points as the match ticked into its dying seconds. But Tarkowski's strike, following a tense VAR check for offside and a potential foul, ensured the honours were shared. The derby’s intensity boiled over when Abdoulaye Doucoure, celebrating wildly in front of the Liverpool supporters, clashed with substitute Curtis Jones, resulting in both being shown red cards after a heated melee involving players from both sides. Liverpool manager Arne Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff were also dismissed after the final whistle, with the visitors vehemently arguing that Tarkowski’s goal should have been disallowed for a shove in the build-up. The last ever FA Cup match at Goodison Park

Image
Everton 0 - 2 Bournemouth Everton handed Bournemouth a place in the FA Cup fifth round, marking the final FA Cup fixture ever to be played at Goodison Park. Author - James L Stadium - Goodison Park The Toffees have called the historic ground home since 1892, but this defeat means their next home FA Cup tie will take place at their new stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, where they are set to move at the start of next season. It was a night to forget for Everton, who were largely the architects of their own downfall. Captain James Tarkowski endured a nightmare first half, with his errors directly leading to both of Bournemouth’s goals. Tarkowski’s struggles began when he mistimed a sliding tackle on Antoine Semenyo inside the box midway through the first half. The Ghanaian forward dusted himself off and confidently smashed home the resulting penalty past Jordan Pickford. Semenyo caused Everton’s defence problems all evening, narrowly missing with another effort and seeing a tight-angled ...

Everton thrash woeful Leicester

Image
Everton 4 - 0 Leicester City Everton stormed into a two-goal lead inside the opening six minutes—one of the fastest starts in Premier League history—on their way to dismantling a hapless Leicester City at Goodison Park. Author - Sarah W  Stadium - Goodison Park What had been billed as a crucial relegation scrap quickly became a one-sided affair, as the Toffees’ electric first half fired them nine points clear of danger. However, Wolves’ 2-0 victory over Aston Villa ensured the Foxes tumbled into the bottom three. Abdoulaye Doucoure wasted no time in setting the tone, latching onto Jordan Pickford’s long ball and slotting home after just 10.18 seconds—the fastest goal in Everton’s history and the fourth quickest ever recorded in the Premier League. Only Shane Long, Philip Billing, and Ledley King have scored quicker in the competition. Leicester’s static defending invited further punishment, and Everton duly obliged. Moments later, Beto raced onto James Tarkowski’s through ball ...

Everton battle for win away at Brighton

Image
Brighton & Hove Albion 1 - 0 Everton Iliman Ndiaye’s first-half penalty proved decisive as Everton edged closer to safety with a hard-fought victory at Brighton, marking David Moyes' 700th Premier League match in charge. Author - Sarah W  Stadium - Amex Stadium The breakthrough came seven minutes before the interval when Brighton defender Joel Veltman appeared to shepherd the ball out of play with his hand under pressure from Beto in the penalty area. After being advised by VAR to review the incident on the pitchside monitor, referee Tim Robinson awarded the penalty. Ndiaye coolly slotted the ball into the bottom corner, notching his fifth Premier League goal of the campaign. Brighton offered little in the first half but emerged for the second with more intent. Kaoru Mitoma curled an effort narrowly wide of the far post, while Joao Pedro saw his close-range strike scrambled behind by a combination of Orel Mangala and Jordan Pickford. Substitute Georginio Rutter also came cl...

Have Everton started their road to recovery?

Image
Everton 3 - 2 Tottenham Hotspur Everton began their road to recovery under returning manager David Moyes with an impressive victory at Goodison Park, piling further pressure on Tottenham's under-fire boss, Ange Postecoglou. Author - Sarah W  Spurs were disjointed and vulnerable for large parts of the game, as a revitalised Everton side – who had only managed three Premier League wins and 15 goals all season before this match – dominated proceedings. The Toffees raced to a well-deserved 3-0 lead by half-time and, despite a late Tottenham fightback, the final scoreline flattered the visitors, failing to capture the gulf in performance between the two teams. With both sides desperate for points, Everton swept Spurs aside in a blistering first half, laying the foundation for a crucial victory that condemned Postecoglou's side to their seventh defeat in 10 league matches. Dominic Calvert-Lewin broke a 1,288-minute Premier League goal drought dating back to September, skillfully ...

Everton start new era with a win

Image
Everton 2 - 0 Peterborough United  Premier League strugglers Everton kickstarted life after Sean Dyche with a hard-fought victory over League One side Peterborough in the FA Cup third round. Author - Sarah W  Thursday night's tie at Goodison Park was overshadowed by the shock announcement of Dyche's sacking just three hours before kick-off. The surprise decision left Everton Under-18s coach Leighton Baines and club captain Seamus Coleman stepping in as interim managers on a freezing Merseyside evening. Portuguese striker Beto broke the deadlock three minutes before the interval, coolly rounding goalkeeper Nicholas Bilokapic after latching onto a brilliant through ball from 17-year-old Harrison Armstrong. It was a moment of quality in an otherwise cagey contest. Beto had earlier seen a header comfortably saved, while Orel Mangala came close with a stunning volley that clipped the top of the crossbar. Peterborough, managed by Darren Ferguson, also threatened, with Cian Hay...

Are Nottingham Forest heading to the Champions League?

Image
Everton 0 - 2 Nottingham Forest Nottingham Forest capped off the year in style with a convincing win over a lacklustre Everton, climbing to second in the Premier League table. Author - Sarah W  Nuno Espirito Santo’s side continues to capture the imagination with their impressive performances, emerging as one of the season’s biggest surprises and threatening to shake up the established order at the top of the league. With Arsenal not playing until Wednesday, Forest’s victory at Goodison Park ensured they ended the day in second place, behind league leaders Liverpool, who stormed to a 5-0 win over West Ham to extend their lead to eight points. Chris Wood played a pivotal role in both of Forest’s goals, scoring his 11th league goal of the season with a sublime finish before setting up Morgan Gibbs-White for a composed second-half strike. Wood had already given Everton’s defence a couple of warnings—first with a long-range volley that went wide and then with a header over the ba...

Crisis continues at Manchester City

Image
Manchester City 1 - 1 Everton Erling Haaland saw his second-half penalty saved by Jordan Pickford as Manchester City’s struggles continued with a lacklustre Premier League draw against Everton at the Etihad Stadium. Author - Macca Pep Guardiola’s side, once an unstoppable force, now find themselves in uncharted waters, having won just once in their last 13 matches across all competitions. The result leaves the reigning champions in sixth place, five points behind Arsenal in fourth and a daunting 14 points adrift of league leaders Liverpool. City came close to a dream start in the third minute when Josko Gvardiol’s towering header struck the post. Their early dominance eventually paid off in the 14th minute, as Bernardo Silva capitalised on Jeremy Doku’s pass, squeezing a deflected shot past Jarrad Branthwaite into the far corner. Phil Foden nearly doubled the lead, setting up Silva in the box, but the Portuguese midfielder’s first-time effort went wide. Everton, however, made their...

Chelsea held by determined Everton

Image
Everton 0 - 0 Chelsea The blue side of Merseyside did the red side of Merseyside a huge favour by holding Chelsea to a draw at Goodison Park Author - Sarah W  Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca dismissed talk earlier in the week about his team being Premier League title contenders – and based on this result, he may have been right. While the Italian may have privately harboured different thoughts, Chelsea’s eight-match winning streak across all competitions came to an end, delivering a blow to their hopes of reclaiming the league trophy for Stamford Bridge. Star performer Cole Palmer, who stole the show with four goals – including a stunning first-half hat-trick – in a 6-0 demolition of Everton back in April, struggled to make an impact this time. He dragged an early shot wide and set up Jackson for a glaring miss. Arsenal 0 - 0 Everton Arteta side were held by a determined Everton side resulting in another dent in their title bid.  Author - DJ Arsenal controlled 76% of the possession and registered 13 shots but failed to break down a resolute Everton defence, which managed just two shots all game. Everton's first chance came as early as the sixth minute and arguably presented the best opportunity of the match. Abdoulaye Doucoure broke through on goal but hesitated, allowing Gabriel to block his angled effort. From then on, Arsenal monopolised the ball but struggled to carve out clear chances. Captain Martin Ødegaard dragged one shot wide and saw another deflected effort clawed away by Jordan Pickford. England's number one was in inspired form, making a brilliant reflex save to deny Bukayo Saka early in the second half. Despite Arsenal's relentless efforts, they couldn’t find the winning goal. When Andy Johnson and Tim Cahill were the pride of Everton

Everton pile pressure on Wolves manager

Image
Everton 4 - 0 Wolves Everton ended a five-game winless streak in the Premier League with a resounding victory over a dismal Wolves side at Goodison Park, ramping up the pressure on under-fire manager Gary O’Neil. Author - Craig H from GMCR Football  Both managers were under the spotlight going into Wednesday’s clash after their teams had each shipped four goals at the weekend. While Wolves fans turned on O’Neil, especially after Craig Dawson's two own goals, Everton boss Sean Dyche enjoyed watching his side deliver a much-needed dominant display, lifting them five points clear of the relegation zone. After four games without a goal, Everton made the perfect start. Ashley Young’s sublime 25-yard free-kick bent around the wall and nestled beautifully into the bottom-right corner, ending their scoring drought in style. Elsewhere in the Premier League Six minutes later, it looked like Everton had doubled their lead when James Tarkowski powered in a header from Dwight McNeil’s cro...

Man United ease to win over Everton

Image
Manchester United 4 - 0 Everton Ruben Amorim secured his first Premier League victory in style as Manchester United cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win over struggling Everton at Old Trafford. Author - Olivia T After a 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town in Amorim's league debut last weekend and a midweek Europa League win over Bodo/Glim t, the Portuguese boss saw his side find their feet on Sunday. Despite a shaky start, they ultimately delivered a clinical performance, with Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee both bagging two goals apiece. It was a match to forget for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, who had been a summer transfer target for United. His misfortune played a key role in the home side’s opening goals. Rashford’s low strike took a deflection off Branthwaite's boot to give United the lead, and moments later, the centre-back was caught dithering on the ball. This allowed Amad Diallo to steal possession and set up Bruno Fernandes, who teed up Zirkzee for a composed fi...

Premier League: Everton squander another lead

Image
Aston Villa 3 - 2 Everton Jhon Duran’s stunning long-range strike secured a dramatic Premier League comeback win for Aston Villa, as Everton collapsed from a 2-0 lead for the second game in a row. Everton were left reeling, having already thrown away a two-goal advantage in their previous match against Bournemouth, and Saturday brought a painful sense of déjà vu as they squandered another lead, leaving them still without a point this season. A closer look at what happened Villa started strongly, with Ollie Watkins’ header cleared off the line, but it was Everton who struck first. Dwight McNeil dispossessed former teammate Amadou Onana – much to the delight of the travelling fans – before surging forward and firing a precise shot into the bottom corner. Despite their struggles and lack of confidence, Sean Dyche’s side extended their lead in the 27th minute when Dominic Calvert-Lewin rose highest to powerfully head home. However, Villa quickly responded. Ex-Everton full-back Luca...

Premier League: Nightmare ending for Everton

Image
Everton 2 - 3 AFC Bournemouth Bournemouth pulled off a remarkable late comeback, overturning a two-goal deficit after the 86th minute to stun Everton in a Premier League clash at Goodison Park. Everton had looked set to secure their first win of the season, and their first in August in three years, after taking a deserved lead. But they fell apart spectacularly in the dying moments, as Bournemouth scored three goals in nine chaotic minutes, sparking jubilant celebrations among their players and travelling fans. Antoine Semenyo’s close-range finish from Dango Ouattara’s cross to make it 2-1 seemed like nothing more than a consolation for the visitors, who had been trailing to second-half goals from Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin. Instead, it marked the start of a dramatic collapse from Everton. Two minutes into stoppage time, Luis Sinisterra set up Bournemouth captain Lewis Cook to equalise, leaving Everton clinging on for a point. But the Toffees crumbled further, sufferi...

EFL Cup: Everton nerves eased

Image
Everton 3 - 0 Doncaster Rovers Everton gave their fans a much-needed lift after a disappointing start to the season, as Iliman Ndiaye marked his full debut with a superb solo goal in a convincing 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Doncaster. Following a 3-0 loss at home to Brighton in their Premier League opener and a dismal 4-0 defeat at Tottenham, the Toffees couldn’t afford another slip-up against their League Two opponents. Here’s how the action unfolded at Goodison Park Grant McCann’s Doncaster side looked like they might pull off an upset, but Everton took the lead early in the second half with Tim Iroegbunam’s first-time strike, which Dwight McNeil claimed to have got a touch on. Everton’s long-awaited first goal of the season was quickly followed by Ndiaye’s moment of magic, as he turned, ran, and finished brilliantly, before Beto sealed a morale-boosting win ahead of their upcoming fixture against Bournemouth. Doncaster, making their first trip to Goodison Park since 1985, started...
