PL: Pressure builds on Rafael Benítez

Everton 2-3 Brighton

Brighton have piled more pressure on Rafael Benitez as they climbed to eighth in the Premier League with victory at Goodison Park.

Everton 2 - 3 Brighton

Alexis Mac Allister scored a third-minute opener for the visitors following Neal Maupay's cushioned header and Dan Burn headed in when unmarked at the back post to double the lead just before the half-hour mark.

The returning Dominic Calvert-Lewin had the chance to respond from the penalty spot. However, he fired his spot-kick over.

Half-time was met by thousands of boos from home fans. Gordon gave his side hope of a fightback with a deflected shot eight minutes after half-time.

Allan drew a superb save from Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez as Everton chased an equaliser but Mac Allister's excellent second put the away side back in control.

Gordon scored a second with 14 minutes remaining. This made for a tense finish, but he was not able to complete his hat-trick with a late chance. The Toffees remain in 15th position.

The best reaction

After the match, the Everton Twitter account posted: "Gordon's brace not enough as Brighton earn the points at Goodison." The responses to this tweet from Everton fans provides us with some interesting reading.

One said: "I can’t watch this anymore. Rafa has no plan, the players look so lost, and the games as a whole are just played at a horrible level by our players. It's been bad for a while but I’ve never seen it be this bad."

As you can imagine, the responses from Brighton and their fans were a lot more positive.

Brighton boss Graham Potter told BBC Sport: "Brilliant. It has been a fantastic week for us, seven points. We took the lead, deservedly so. We had to dig in and defend and then scored some good goals. Delighted for the players.

"We are in a decent moment. I think there's only three teams who have lost fewer games than us in the league.

"We are disappointed with the goals we conceded but delighted with the three points.
