PL news: Newcastle United appoint Eddie Howe as new head coach

It has been announced that Newcastle United have appointed Eddie Howe as their new head coach

Howe has signed a contract until the summer of 2024. He has not been in management since he left Bournemouth in August 2020 following their relegation from the Premier League.

Howe told the Newcastle United website:"It is a great honour to become head coach of a club with the stature and history of Newcastle United. It is a very proud day for me and my family.

"This is a wonderful opportunity, but there is also a lot of work ahead of us and I am eager to get onto the training ground to start working with the players.

"I would like to thank the club's owners for this opportunity and thank the club's supporters for the incredible welcome they have already given me. I am very excited to begin our journey together."

Newcastle United co-owner Amanda Staveley added on the same website story: "We have been incredibly impressed by Eddie through what has been a rigorous recruitment process.

"As well as his obvious achievements with AFC Bournemouth, where he had a transformational impact, he is a passionate and dynamic coach who has clear ideas about taking this team and club forward."

As you can imagine, there has also been a lot of discussion about the appointment on social media and beyond. One Newcastle fan told us offline: "I think this could work out very well for everyone involved. Up the Toon!"

One Twitter user replied to Newcastle's social media post: "He’s a underrated manager and I think with loads of money and backing he could do very well just look at what he did a Bournemouth with such a little stadium and barely any money."

Helping the club recover

Howe watched Newcastle's recent 1-1 league draw at Brighton on Saturday from the stands. They have yet to win a game this season and only picked up five points so far. Howe clearly has a lot of work to do but many are clearly confident that he can do a good job.
