Premier League: Wolves win West Midlands derby

 Wolves 1 - 0 Aston Villa

Victory on derby day over Aston Villa tasted all the sweeter for Wolves as it left them within touching distance of survival.

Toti Gomes' bullet header settled a typically lively West Midlands clash and secured Wolves a fourth successive Molineux triumph. This has created a ten-point gap between them and the drop zone.

Toti’s first goal for the club proved to be the game's only goal, with striking duo Matheus Cunha and Diego Costa both coming close, but it mattered not as a fiery atmosphere brought home the three points. This could lead to Premier League safety soon rather than later.

Let's explore the post-match reaction from the West Midlands.

The full-time whistle sparked joyous scenes of celebration and another Premier League season is now within touching distance for the club. For Villa, it represents a missed opportunity in their quest for European qualification.

Danny, a Wolves Season Ticket holder, said: "That is a massive result for us. We just wanted to win at home again. The team worked so hard and I'm so proud of all the lads and manager. Villa have been one the best teams in the second half of the season, but I think the team deserved this for all they have been through over the last few months.

Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui has described turning around Wolves’ Premier League fortunes as the most difficult achievement of his career. He told the club website: "The players have worked very, very hard and we have suffered a lot – the last match against Brighton was very hard for us to take – and again today, they have shown a big heart, a big commitment and a big quality because we have played against one of the best teams in the second half of the season."

Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn told the media: "We are a bit frustrated. We played pretty well and controlled much of the match, but Wolves are string at home and a threat from set pieces. They made it difficult for us, but we had our chances, and on another day we could be going home with a point."

Peter, an Aston Villa fan who was in the away end at Wolves, wasn't happy with the performance but is played with the overall progress that they've made. He added: "It makes it tougher for us now. However, we have three games left and the players will try and win all of them. They need to react positively, and we will asses it the same way we assessed games in the positive run we were on."
