Atletico Madrid interested in signing Liverpool's Andy Robertson

Image
Andy Robertson to Atlético Madrid?  Is another title-winning full back about to move to Spain?  Author | William G Atlético Madrid have expressed an interest in signing Andy Robertson, as Liverpool prepare to make a move for Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez to become their first-choice left-back.  Robertson said last week that he had not given much thought to his future, instead focusing on enjoying a well-earned break after another long campaign, one that ended with his second Premier League title. However, with the transfer window set to open in the coming days, uncertainty surrounds the Scotland captain’s future at Anfield for the first time in eight years.  Kerkez is expected to be Arne Slot’s preferred option at left-back, with a fee of around £45m to £50m likely to be required to prise him from Bournemouth. Liverpool are eager to keep hold of Robertson and would prefer to let current understudy Kostas Tsimikas depart.  READ MORE |  Transfer News an...

England youngsters start Euros defence with a win

Image
Czech Republic 1 - 3 England Harvey Elliott set England Under-21s on course for a winning start as the reigning champions opened their European Championship defence with a composed victory over the Czech Republic in Slovakia. Author | George B Stadium | MOL Aréna Despite a string of withdrawals in the lead-up to the tournament, head coach Lee Carsley named an adventurous line-up for the Young Lions’ opener. England broke the deadlock six minutes before half-time. Tino Livramento, a lively presence down the left, saw his cross deflected into the box where captain James McAtee laid it off for Elliott, who finished with a crisp low drive. Livramento was central again for the second, gliding past his marker before delivering a low ball that brushed Jonathan Rowe en route to beating goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek. The Czechs responded swiftly through Daniel Fila, who nodded in Vaclav Sejk’s chipped cross just moments later. But England reasserted control and sealed the result 14 minutes from...

England suffer friendly defeat against Senegal

Image
England 1 - 3 Senegal We try to pull together some measured reaction and reporting after England lose in Nottingham. It's only a post season friendly that nobody will remember in three months.  Author | Kieran M Stadium | The City Ground England fell to their first defeat under Thomas Tuchel as Senegal claimed a thoroughly deserved win in a low-key friendly at the City Ground. It wasn't a good performance from Tuchel’s team, who were outplayed by confident and composed opponents. Senegal became the first African nation to beat England’s men, and did so with an assured display.  For Tuchel though, it did give him an opportunity to see a different group of players together. He would have learned a lot from this. A closer look at what happened The evening had started brightly for the hosts, who took the lead in the seventh minute when Harry Kane reacted quickest after Edouard Mendy spilled Anthony Gordon’s low effort. It was Kane’s 73rd goal for England. This would be the...

England overcome stubborn Andorra

Image
Andorra 0 - 1 England  Harry Kane’s close-range finish was enough to hand England a narrow 1-0 win over Andorra and extend their unbeaten start to 2026 World Cup qualifying. Author | George B Stadium | RCDE Stadium Before the match, manager Thomas Tuchel had warned fans it might take time to break down a stubborn Andorra side, and that caution proved justified. England were booed off at half-time after failing to score against a team ranked 173rd in the world. The breakthrough came five minutes into the second half. Bayern Munich striker Kane reacted quickest when Curtis Jones' shot was parried, with Noni Madueke pouncing on the rebound and cutting the ball back for the England captain to convert from close range. Tuchel had opted for an adventurous line-up, with Liverpool’s Jones deployed at right-back and Reece James switching to the left. Despite dominating possession, England struggled to carve out meaningful chances. Jude Bellingham and Madueke were both denied by...

Trent Alexander-Arnold to join Real Madrid early

Image
A sign that Real Madrid are taking the Club World Cup seriously? Trent Alexander-Arnold will officially become a Real Madrid player on Sunday 1 June after Liverpool agreed to an early termination of his contract in exchange for a fee. Author | William G Liverpool sources suggest the Spanish club has paid €10m (£8.4m) in a single up-front payment, although figures close to Madrid claim the fee is lower. The payment allows Alexander-Arnold to complete his move in time to feature in the expanded Club World Cup next month. The 26-year-old England international had been due to leave Anfield on a free transfer when his contract expired on 30 June, but had already made clear his intention to depart this summer. He has now signed a six-year deal with Madrid that includes a €1bn (£840m) buy-out clause. Fifa has approved a special transfer window from 1 to 10 June for clubs competing in the month-long Club World Cup, which begins on 14 June in the United States. READ MORE | News from across ...

Chelsea make history in Poland

Image
Real Betis 1 - 4 Chelsea  Enzo Maresca’s bold tactical reshuffle and astute use of personnel steered Chelsea to victory over Real Betis in the Conference League final. Author | Lewis W Stadium | Stadion Wrocław The opening 45 minutes had offered little encouragement for the Premier League side. Betis were deservedly in front at the interval, with Isco orchestrating the first half and providing a no-look assist for Abde Ezzalzouli, who surged through to fire the Spaniards ahead inside nine minutes. But the match flipped after the break. Cole Palmer was afforded greater freedom and, capitalising on the injury-enforced withdrawal of Betis left-back Ricardo Rodríguez, delivered a commanding display that earned him player of the match honours. Palmer's teasing, dipping delivery from a central area was then expertly glanced in by Enzo Fernández just after the hour mark. Image
Manchester United 4 - 1 Athletic Club (Manchester United won 7-1 on aggregate) Mason Mount brought an end to a frustrating 20-month spell with a superb second-half brace as Manchester United set up an all-English Europa League final against Tottenham in Bilbao on 21 May. Author - Olivia T Stadium - Old Trafford The former Chelsea midfielder delivered at just the right moment. Hampered by a succession of injuries since his £55m move from Stamford Bridge in 2023, Mount had made only 10 Premier League starts for United prior to Thursday night. He had barely been on the pitch for 10 minutes when he collected Leny Yoro’s  pass inside the area and finished with composure. It was only his third goal for United, but unquestionably his most significant. The strike extinguished any remaining concerns that Athletic Club might become the first side in 134 attempts to overturn a three-goal first-leg deficit away from home in European competition. The Italian goalkeeper, outstanding in the reverse fixture at the Emirates Stadium, delivered another superb performance with a series of saves that kept Arsenal at bay during a frenetic opening spell. Donnarumma was alert to block Gabriel Martinelli's close-range effort, then produced an even more impressive stop to push away a low, driven shot from Martin Ødegaard as the visitors looked to strike early. Against the run of play, PSG took the lead on the night after 27 minutes. Fabian Ruiz collected a loose clearance from Thomas Partey and unleashed a speculative effort from 20 yards that deflected past David Raya and into the net. READ MORE: Rea...

Dembele gives PSG first-leg lead

Image
Arsenal 0 - 1 PSG Arsenal must come from behind if they are to reach the Champions League final, after Ousmane Dembele's early goal gave Paris Saint-Germain a first-leg advantage at the Emirates Stadium. Author -  DJ Stadium - Emirates Stadium Dembele struck just four minutes in, sweeping a low finish past David Raya after being picked out by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The goal capped a dominant opening spell from the visitors, who pressed high and carved out further chances, including a strong effort from teenager Desire Doue that Raya did well to stop. Once again, PSG were indebted to Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Italian goalkeeper, who produced key performances in earlier rounds against Liverpool and Aston Villa, was in commanding form, denying Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard with sharp saves either side of half-time. Arsenal grew into the contest and thought they had equalised when Mikel Merino headed in from a Declan Rice free-kick, but a lengthy VAR review ruled the goal...

Image
Eintracht Frankfurt 0 - 1 Tottenham Hotspur (Tottenham Hotspur won 2-1 on aggregate) Spurs kept their European hopes alive with a narrow win over Eintracht Frankfurt, edging through to the Europa League semi-finals thanks to a first-half penalty from Dominic Solanke. Author - Greg S Stadium - Deutsche Bank Park After squandering several chances in a frustrating 1-1 draw at home in the first leg, Spurs arrived in Frankfurt knowing they faced a stern test. For much of the match, they were second best in possession and under sustained pressure. The decisive moment came shortly before half-time, when Frankfurt goalkeeper Kaua Santos misjudged a high ball and collided clumsily with James Maddison in the box. Initially, Italian referee Davide Massa waved away the protests, but a VAR review prompted a change of heart. Santos was shown a yellow card, and a penalty was awarded. Author - Olivia T Stadiun - Groupama Stadium United fell behind after 25 minutes when Thiago Almada’s wide free-kick evaded a strong enough touch from André Onana, whose uncertain handling continues to draw scrutiny. But just before the break, United drew level through Leny Yoro. The 18-year-old notched his first goal for the club, reacting sharply to Manuel Ugarte’s volley and steering it into the bottom corner. The visitors looked to have snatched a late winner when Joshua Zirkzee, introduced from the bench, guided a looping header past the goalkeeper from Bruno Fernandes’ cross in the 88th minute. However, with virtually the last kick of the game, Onana fumbled a shot from Georges Mikautadze, allowing Rayan Cherki to tap in and spark celebrations in the Lyon end.
