Harry Kane is getting better with age

Image
Harry Kane’s best chance yet to claim football’s biggest individual honour Earlier this year, Harry Kane finally ended his long wait for silverware in the 15th season of his professional career, as Bayern Munich were crowned Bundesliga champions.  Author |  Peter Grainger The long-awaited triumph paved the way for the England striker to target even greater prizes for club, country and himself. Ballon d’Or ambitions reignited Despite being in the finest form of his career, Kane ranked only 13th at the 2025 Ballon d’Or awards in September and has never finished higher than 10th in the prestigious vote. Yet since Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane DembĂ©lĂ© was crowned the world’s best player in Paris last month, Kane appears to have reached another level entirely. Now 32, he took his tally for the season to 20 goals in just 12 appearances across all competitions as Bayern swept aside Club Brugge 4-0 in the Champions League. Kane knows that if he maintains this relentless scoring r...

Liverpool bounce back in emphatic fashion

Image
Frankfurt 1 - 5 Liverpool Hugo Ekitike scored against his former club as Liverpool emphatically ended their losing streak, coming from behind to thrash Eintracht Frankfurt. Author | Ed Stadium | Deutsche Bank Park After beginning the season with seven straight wins in all competitions, Liverpool had stumbled badly, suffering four successive defeats, including Sunday’s loss to Manchester United in the Premier League. Their troubles appeared set to continue when Rasmus Kristensen, the former Leeds defender, put Frankfurt ahead after a sluggish opening from the visitors. But Liverpool soon found their rhythm. Ekitike, starting alongside British-record signing Alexander Isak for the first time, levelled ten minutes before the break, latching on to Andy Robertson’s precise long pass and finishing calmly. Virgil van Dijk headed Liverpool in front four minutes later from a corner, before Ibrahima KonatĂ© made it 3-1 on the stroke of half-time with another powerful header. Virgil van Dijk...

Ruthless PSG thrash Leverkusen

Image
Bayer Leverkusen 2 - 7 PSG Holders Paris St-Germain delivered a devastating attacking performance to crush Bayer Leverkusen and maintain their perfect start in the Champions League. Author | Sophie T Stadium | BayArena Fantastic atmosphere from both sets of fans Desire Doue struck twice, with Willian Pacho and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia also on target in a rampant first half that saw PSG lead 4-1 at the break. Nuno Mendes, Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele, and Vitinha added further gloss to the scoreline after the interval. Pacho opened the scoring after just seven minutes, meeting Mendes’ teasing in-swinging cross with a firm header. Leverkusen had a chance to level when Illia Zabarnyi fouled Claudio Echeverri in the area, but Alejandro Grimaldo struck the post from the spot. Moments later, captain Robert Andrich saw a yellow card upgraded to red after VAR spotted an elbow on Doue. PSG’s man advantage was short-lived. Zabarnyi was dismissed soon after for hauling down Christian K...

Mourinho and Benfica head to Newcastle Newcastle United host Benfica at St James’ Park, aiming to follow up their win over Union SG with another step toward the Champions League knockout stage.  Eddie Howe’s team lost their opener to Barcelona but responded strongly in Belgium, and a second win would move them closer to qualification. Antoine Griezmann scores his 200th goal for Atletico Madrid

Image
Atletico Madrid 5 - 1 Eintracht Frankfurt Antoine Griezmann scored his 200th goal for as they thrashed Eintracht Frankfurt for their first Champions League win of the season. Author | Paul L Stadium | Metropolitano Stadium Pre match atmosphere Manager Diego Simeone was watching on from the stands after being given a one-match touchline suspension by UEFA for "unsporting conduct" in the 3-2 loss to Liverpool. Atleti needed just four minutes to find the back of the net with Giacomo Raspadori slotting home Giuliano Simeone's cutback. The Spaniards doubled their lead at the Metropolitano when defender Robin Le Normand struck from Julian Alvarez's corner. Then, on the stroke of half-time, Alvarez's stunning mazy run was finished off by former France forward Griezmann, before he celebrated by holding up a 'Grizi 200' shirt to the crowd. Griezmann almost had another in the second half, but it was ruled out for handball. Pictures from the stands J...

Harry Kane continues incredible goalscoring run

Pafos 1 - 5 Bayern Munich Harry Kane extended his remarkable scoring streak with two goals as Bayern Munich swept aside Pafos. Author |  Ed Stadium | Alphamega Stadium Bayern Munich dominated possession throughout The England captain , now 32, has 102 goals in 105 appearances for Bayern since joining from Tottenham for £86.4m in August 2023. This season alone he has 17 in nine club games, including 11 in his last five, alongside a goal for his country in their 5-0 win over Serbia earlier this month. For Pafos, it was a historic night as they hosted their first Champions League group match, but their hopes were quickly undone. Kane opened the scoring after 15 minutes with a first-time finish from Michael Olise ’s pass. Raphael Guerreiro added a second soon after, before Nicolas Jackson claimed his first Bayern goal since arriving on loan from Chelsea, again thanks to Olise’s creativity. Kane struck again on 34 minutes to make it 4-0, though Mislav Orsic briefly lifted the ho...

Eintracht Frankfurt thrash Galatasaray

Image
Eintracht Frankfurt 5 - 1 Galatasaray Eintracht Frankfurt recovered from an early setback to secure a commanding win over Galatasaray in their Champions League opener. Author | Ed Stadium | Deutsche Bank Park Pre-match scenes In a raucous atmosphere, the visitors struck first after only eight minutes. Former Manchester City winger Leroy SanĂ© won possession in his own half, surged forward and slipped in Yunus AkgĂĽn, who finished neatly into the bottom corner. Frankfurt, however, turned the game on its head with three goals in the space of 12 minutes before the interval. Davinson Sánchez was unfortunate to turn the ball into his own net after Ugurcan Çakir had parried Ritsu DĹŤan’s effort.  Moments later, 19-year-old Turkey international Can Uzan scored against his country’s champions with an instinctive strike on the turn. On the stroke of half-time Galatasaray conceded a second own goal, Wilfried Singo heading past his own goalkeeper while attempting to clear a free-kick. Home fan...

A familiar face ruins Chelsea's Champions League return

Image
Bayern Munich 3 - 1 Chelsea Harry Kane took full advantage of Chelsea’s defensive frailties to score twice for Bayern Munich. Author | Lewis W Stadium | Allianz Arena The England captain, now 32, opened the scoring from the penalty spot after being fouled by MoisĂ©s Caicedo and later sealed the win with a curling finish after Malo Gusto ’s misplaced pass. Chelsea had already gifted Bayern a lead when Trevoh Chalobah diverted the ball into his own net. A returning Cole Palmer offered brief hope with a superb strike into the top corner on his 100th appearance for the club, but the revival never truly gathered momentum. Juventus and Dortmund play out a classic in Turin

Image
Juventus 4 - 4 Borussia Dortmund Englishman Lloyd Kelly struck a dramatic equaliser in the sixth minute of added time to rescue a point for Juventus following an eight-goal spectacle at home to Dortmund. Author | Andrea Stadium | Allianz Stadium The centre-back, who joined from Newcastle in the summer, had earlier conceded a penalty that allowed Dortmund to take a 4-2 lead. He made amends when he met Dusan Vlahovic’s 94th-minute finish with a headed goal two minutes later. The match provided a remarkable second-half display, with all eight goals coming after the 51st minute and Juventus recovering from conceding three times. It was only the second Champions League match to see eight goals scored in one half, following Bayern Munich’s 9-2 victory over Dinamo Zagreb last season. Gutsy Northern Ireland performance not quite enough

Image
Germany 3 - 1 Northern Ireland Northern Ireland produced a determined display but could not prevent Germany from claiming a first win in their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign. Author | Ed Stadium | RheinEnergieSTADION The under-pressure hosts took an early lead in the seventh minute through Serge Gnabry, but on a tense night in Cologne, Isaac Price's volley 11 minutes before half-time brought Northern Ireland back on level terms against Julian Nagelsmann's side. Northern Ireland held firm until the 69th minute, when Nadiem Amiri took advantage of a rare lapse at the back before a curling free-kick from Liverpool's Florian Wirtz made it 3-1. Closer analysis of what happened Coming off three successive defeats, including Thursday's 2-0 loss in Slovakia to begin their Group A campaign, Germany could hardly have hoped for a stronger start. A heavy touch from centre-back Eoin Toal allowed Newcastle United's new signing Nick Woltemade to nip in and steal the ball, ...

Bayern Munich thrash RB Leipzig

Bayern Munich 6 - 0 RB Leipzig Harry Kane began the new Bundesliga season in devastating fashion, scoring a hat-trick as Bayern Munich swept aside RB Leipzig in a commanding display. Author | Ed Stadium | Allianz Arena It was Michael Olise who opened the scoring after 27 minutes, lashing a fierce strike into the far corner after a loose ball fell his way. Serge Gnabry , outstanding throughout, was central to Bayern’s second five minutes later, threading a pass for Luis DĂaz to hammer in off the underside of the bar for his first Bundesliga goal since arriving from Liverpool . Just before half-time, Gnabry again tormented Leipzig , feinting to shoot before slipping the ball to Olise, who powered home his second. Bayern Munich win Franz Beckenbauer Supercup

Image
Stuttgart 1 - 2 Bayern Munich  Luis Diaz marked his Bayern Munich debut with a goal as Harry Kane also scored to secure victory over Stuttgart in the German Super Cup. Author | Ed Stadium |  MHPArena Diaz, who joined Vincent Kompany’s side from Liverpool this summer for £65.5m on a four-year contract, headed home from Serge Gnabry ’s cross in the 77th minute to double Bayern’s lead. Kane had opened the scoring in the first half, capitalising on a poor clearance to slide the ball into the bottom corner. Jamie Leweling pulled one back for German Cup winners Stuttgart in the 93rd minute, but it was little more than a consolation as Bayern claimed their first trophy of the season. After his goal, Diaz paid tribute to his former Liverpool team-mate Diogo Jota , who was killed in a car crash in July, by replicating one of Jota’s celebrations. It will be Spain v England in the Euro 2025 final

Image
Germany 0 - 1 Spain Aitana BonmatĂ produced a moment of brilliance in extra time to send Spain into the final of Euro 2025. Author | Georgie B Stadium | Stadion Letzigrund This dramatic victory has set up a World Cup final rematch with England. With the tie still goalless after 90 minutes, the two-time Ballon d’Or winner turned smartly on the edge of the area before firing low past Ann-Katrin Berger in the 113th minute. It was a finish that reflected her class and composure, and one that proved decisive on a tense night. Germany rallied in the closing minutes and almost forced a penalty shootout. Cata Coll made a crucial diving stop to deny Lea SchĂĽller and preserve Spain’s slender advantage, booking La Roja's place in their first European Championship final. The result sets up a repeat of the 2023 World Cup final, which Spain edged 1-0 thanks to Olga Carmona’s first-half strike.  A closer look at what happened on another dramatic night Bth teams were well matched across the pitc...

Another success story for the Frankfurt finishing school

Image
Are Eintracht Frankfurt the new Dortmund? Hugo Ekitike is the latest product of Frankfurt’s astute recruitment strategy. Author | Ed While not exactly an unknown when he arrived on loan in early 2024, his career had stalled somewhat. He was previously on the radar of several clubs, including Newcastle United, during his early breakthrough at Reims. Instead, Ekitike opted to join Paris Saint-Germain, but struggled to make an impact in a squad stacked with attacking talent. Frankfurt saw an opportunity and made his move permanent a year ago. Under head coach Dino Toppmöller, Ekitike featured both as a lone forward and in a front two. In the first half of last season, he formed a potent strike partnership with Omar Marmoush. The duo caused problems for defences across the Bundesliga before being separated in January, when Manchester City signed Marmoush for £63m. youtu.be/TlOGePvmvks?... Liverpool have signed a talented. Sweden underline title credentials

Sweden 4 - 1 Germany Sweden underlined their Euro 2025 credentials with an emphatic 4-1 win over Germany in Zurich, finishing top of Group C and handing the eight-time champions their heaviest ever defeat at a European Championship. Author | Ed Stadium | Stadion Letzigrund Both sides had already secured passage to the quarter-finals, but top spot was still up for grabs in a match that quickly descended into chaos for Germany, who were reduced to 10 players after just half an hour. Germany made the brighter start and struck first in the seventh minute. A superb ball from Carlotta Wamser released Jule Brand, who slotted confidently beyond Jennifer Falk to score the first goal Sweden have conceded at the tournament.
