Premier League transfer rumour: Lingard on the move?

Jesse Lingard's future career at Manchester United is in doubt after talks over a new contract collapsed.

Lingard's present deal expires next summer and United hoped to extend the England midfielder's time at the club following an exciting loan spell at West Ham in the second half of last season.

Despite being linked with moves to several clubs, the English midfielder opted to stay at Manchester United this season. He reportedly believed manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would provide him with more game time.

Instead, he has just started just one game throughout the current campaign. This was the EFL Cup defeat by West Ham in September. He has also made seven substitute appearances, totalling just 76 minutes.

Manchester United news from European Super Football

He's had more game time for England during the current campaign than United, even though he also lost his place in Gareth Southgate's squad for the recent World Cup qualifying victories.

Reportedly, Lingard is one of several players left confused by Solskjaer's decision not to give more players a chance as the club look to arrest a terrible run of results. This has included a 5-0 home defeat by Liverpool and a 2-0 loss to Manchester City.

It is understood that under the circumstances, Lingard, who has been with United since he was a youngster, sees little point in seeking further talks. At the very least, he hopes to secure a loan move in January.

Reaction to this news

Many United fans like Lingard even though they don't see him as a regular starter. They believe he can be a useful squad player, and his goal at West Ham was a sign of this.

Interestingly, he is being linked with a number of European giants including Barcelona, AC Milan and Atlético Madrid.

Lingard's career at Manchester United

Jesse Lingard made his senior debut while on loan at Leicester City in 2012, and spent time on loan at Birmingham City and Brighton & Hove Albion during the 2013–14 season and at Derby County in 2015. He broke into the Manchester United first-team under Louis van Gaal in 2015, and was a regular in the side until 2018, when he fell out of favour under Ole Gunnar Solskjær. He then struggled to regain his place in the side.

During his time at the club, he has won the UEFA Europa League, FA Cup, FA Community Shield and EFL Cup. Lingard is one of few players to have scored in the finals of the FA and League alongside the Community Shield.

A highly productive loan spell with West Ham United in 2021 saw Lingard rediscover his form, scoring 9 goals in his first 11 appearances for the Hammers. Will he go back to West Ham in January 2022?
