FA Cup: Notts come from behind to avoid upset

Image
Notts County 5 - 1 Alfreton Town Notts County staged a comeback to avoid an FA Cup upset, ultimately securing a 5-1 win over Alfreton. Author - Sean M Despite an early setback when Liam Waldock put the visitors ahead at Meadow Lane, Alassana Jatta and Jevani Brown both scored twice in the second half to push County through to the second round. Jake Day had a chance to put National League North side Alfreton in front, but his volley was comfortably held by Alex Bass. However, the breakthrough came in the 14th minute when Day’s shot deflected into Waldock’s path, allowing him to slot it home. County responded almost immediately, levelling the score just two minutes later with Matty Platt’s long-range strike nestling in the bottom corner. The League Two side took control early in the second half when Brown crossed for Jatta, who found the back of the net. The pair linked up again in the 62nd minute, with Jatta sliding the ball under George Willis to claim his second goal. Brown added

Championship: Luton earn deserved point against West Brom

Image
Luton Town 1 - 1 West Bromwich Albion Luton Town fought back to secure a well-earned point, extending West Bromwich Albion's winless streak in the Championship to seven games. Author - Mark Lee Josh Maja opened the scoring for Albion with a clever flick in first-half injury time, marking their only shot on target before the break. Luton equalised on the hour through former Birmingham City player Tahith Chong, who fired in a composed low left-footed strike on the counter-attack. Carlos Corberan's Baggies have now recorded five consecutive draws, while Luton have managed just five points from their last seven games. Luton's brief escape from the relegation zone depends on Cardiff City and Plymouth Argyle failing to win on Saturday. A closer look at what happened Corberan was forced to reshuffle his line-up due to injuries following the 0-0 draw with Cardiff City. FA Cup: Tamworth shock Huddersfield

Image
Tamworth 1 - 0 Huddersfield The greatest cup competition in football is here with the first-round proper, and there's already been a huge shock. Author - Peter Grainger from GMCR Football Former winners in Huddersfield Town have been dumped out by part-timers Tamworth, 57 places below them in the football pyramid. Tom Tonks' long throw caused chaos all night, and it sailed onto the line before being helped over it by the flailing fist of keeper Chris Maxwell, sending The Lamb wild. A closer look at what happened Huddersfield struggled to cope with the direct balls into their box, while the Lambs varied their approach, showing real quality and more than matching their opponents in both effort and determination. Tamworth’s keeper, Jas Singh, pulled off a couple of excellent saves, including a stunning close-range block with his legs to deny Tom Iorpenda. But Huddersfield’s attacks were few and far between – especially in the second half – and the home side, who sit 16th in th

Championship: Cardiff continue revival

Image
Cardiff City 2 - 0 Portsmouth Cardiff City continued their revival under interim boss Omer Riza, cruising past Portsmouth with another impressive attacking display to secure their second home victory in just four days. Author - Sean M Fresh off their 5-0 thrashing of Plymouth Argyle on Saturday, the Bluebirds hit the ground running once more. They found themselves 2-0 up within 13 minutes, thanks to an own goal from Regan Poole and Callum Robinson’s close-range strike. A closer look at what happened Despite squandering several opportunities to extend their lead either side of half-time, Cardiff kept Portsmouth’s substitute goalkeeper Jordan Archer busy, with David Turnbull and Anwar El Ghazi testing him throughout the match. Although Portsmouth showed signs of life in the second half, they struggled to break down Cardiff’s defence, with their rare attempts on goal thwarted by captain Jak Alnwick in the Bluebirds' goal. The win sees Cardiff move out of the Championship relegatio

Championship: Cardiff thrash Plymouth

Image
Cardiff City 5 - 0 Plymouth Argyle Cardiff City climbed off the bottom of the Championship table in stunning fashion with a dominant win over 10-man Plymouth Argyle, securing only their second league victory of the season. Author - Sean M In what was undoubtedly their finest display of the campaign so far, the Bluebirds surged to an early 2-0 lead. Alex Robertson opened the scoring with a sublime 20-yard curling strike, followed by a similarly classy finish from Rubin Colwill. Plymouth's troubles worsened just before half-time when Ibrahim Cissoko was sent off for pushing Perry Ng to the ground. Colwill, who had assisted Robertson’s opener, continued to shine in the second half. His low cross was tapped in by Anwar El Ghazi, before Callum Robinson added a fourth with an impressive solo run and finish. Chris Willock made it five with a bouncing shot from the edge of the box, as Cardiff more than doubled their season’s goal tally in one game, having scored just four in their prev

Their fans will be starting to get concerned about another tough relegation battle. A closer look at what happened at Hillsborough Just three minutes in, Zian Flemming went close for the visitors but his shot was well kept out by Wednesday goalkeeper James Beadle. The hosts did grow into the game and almost got in behind the Burnley backline. It took some superb last-ditch defending from Chelsea loanee Bashir Humphreys to deny Wednesday’s Djeidi Gassama a presentable goalscoring opportunity. On the 30-minute mark, Wednesday's Barry Bannan delivered an almost perfect fre

Championship: Luton ease to win over rivals

Image
Luton Town 3 - 0 Watford  Under-pressure Luton Town manager Rob Edwards guided his team to a spirited and well-deserved win against their fierce rivals, Watford, in a typically heated derby at Kenilworth Road. Author - Wiliam G from GMCR Football Luton, who were sitting 21st in the table and had only managed two wins in their last nine league matches, took the lead in the first half through Jordan Clark. The midfielder reacted quickly to redirect Tom Holmes' shot past goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann. Watford, who had the chance to go level on points at the top of the table with a victory, struggled to cope with Luton’s physical approach and failed to muster a single shot on target before half-time. Within two minutes of the second half, Carlton Morris, in top form, was left unmarked to head home Alfie Doughty’s corner from close range, putting Luton 2-0 up. Watford rarely looked like they could avoid a fourth consecutive away league defeat. Edwards had the final word against the clu

Leeds United 2 - 0 Sheffield United  Leeds United picked up a deserved 2-0 win over Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United at Elland Road. Author - William G from GMCR Football Largie Ramazani and Brenden Aaronson had good chances for the homeside in a goalless first half that the hosts had dominated. Daniel Farke's men continued to have the upper hand after the break and were rewarded when Pascal Struijk blasted in from a 69th-minute corner as the Blades conceded for the first time in more than 11 hours. Substitute Mateo Joseph sealed the derby win with a 90th-minute second goal as he finished well from Joel Piroe's pass. The victory meant Leeds leapfrogged the Blades on goal difference with both sides having 19 points as Chris Wilder's men lost for the first time in the league this season. You can watch the highlights of this Yorkshire derby in the video below. The footage is from the Sheffield United YouTube account. My reaction What a thrilling return to Championship foo

AFC Wimbledon 4 - 0 Carlisle United Matty Stevens’ hat-trick marked a triumphant return for AFC Wimbledon to Plough Lane as they cruised past Carlisle in League Two. Stevens’ two early goals, followed by a Cameron Harper own goal, gave Wimbledon a commanding 3-0 lead by half-time. Shortly after the break, Stevens completed his hat-trick, sealing a dominant win for the home side – their sixth consecutive victory on home turf in all competitions this season. Championship: Bristol City rescue point in Severnside derby

Image
Bristol City 1 - 1 Cardiff City Luke McNally's powerful header earned Bristol City a hard-fought point in an entertaining 1-1 draw with Cardiff in the Severnside derby. Cardiff's Anwar El Ghazi came close to scoring in the first half, hitting the post from close range in what was otherwise a period dominated by Bristol City. However, it was Cardiff who took the lead after the break, with Ollie Tanner producing a moment of magic—beating two defenders and smashing the ball into the top corner after Bristol City carelessly lost possession. Cardiff had chances to extend their lead but were wasteful, and they paid the price when McNally headed in the equaliser on 73 minutes. This came after Fally Mayulu hit the post, and Cardiff struggled to clear the resulting pressure fully. A draw seemed a fair outcome, though it did little to boost either side’s momentum ahead of the international break. Both teams have had underwhelming seasons, with Bristol City sitting 17th in the Champio

Championship: Stoke thrash Pompey

Stoke City 6 - 1 Portsmouth Tom Cannon bagged four goals as Stoke City stormed to a dominant win over Portsmouth, securing their first Championship victory under new head coach Narcis Pelach. Cannon opened the scoring for Stoke after 13 minutes with a superb curling free-kick from 25 yards—his first goal for the club. Portsmouth hit back in the 29th minute when Mark O'Mahony finished off a swift counter-attack, but Stoke quickly regained control. Cannon struck again, and Sam Gallagher added another in the space of three minutes just before half-time. Cannon then netted twice more in rapid succession after the break, before Andrew Moran rounded off the comprehensive win, leaving Portsmouth still searching for their first victory after eight league matches. A closer look at what happened as Stoke return to winning ways The Potters started with real intent, with Ben Wilmot rattling the crossbar with a long-range effort after just 30 seconds. Championship: Wayne Rooney's Plymouth produce their best performance of the season

Image
Plymouth Argyle 3 - 1 Luton Town Plymouth Argyle are now on something of a roll after consecutive home victories. Following their recent victory over Sunderland, they've now had the better Luton. With six goals scored, things are starting to come together for Wayne Rooney's side. Rami Al Hajj got them off to a great start with an early goal, and substitute Ibrahim Cissoko made his mark with a brace. Luton had a glimmer of hope when Victor Moses briefly levelled things, but Plymouth proved too strong for a Luton side that looks like it is struggling to adapt to its return to English football's second tier. A closer look at what happened at Home Park Rami Al Hajj, making his first start for the home side, needed eight minutes to open his Argyle account, curling a lovely strike into the top corner after some slick build-up play. Despite creating further chances before half-time, Plymouth couldn’t extend their lead, while Elijah Adebayo missed a great opportunity to bring t

EFL Cup: Leicester squeeze through on penalties

Image
Walsall 0 - 0 Leicester City (Leicester City won 3-0 on penalties) Leicester City narrowly advanced to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, overcoming a determined Walsall side on penalties. Despite being from League Two, Walsall created the better chances during the 90 minutes, but Charlie Lakin and experienced forward Albert Adomah couldn’t capitalise on the best of them. Leicester’s goalkeeper, Danny Ward, became the hero in the shootout, saving all three of Walsall’s penalties, helping Steve Cooper’s team scrape through after a major scare. A closer look at what happened at the Bescot Stadium Cooper made 10 changes for the trip across the Midlands, with Jamie Vardy, Stephy Mavididi, Harry Winks, and Wilfred Ndidi all left out of the squad. The reshuffled team struggled to find rhythm, and it wasn’t until Abdul Fatawu’s skilful runs in the second half that Leicester began to trouble the hosts. He created two good chances but missed both, and later delivered the cross that led to

Championship: Referee dominates Lancashire derby

Image
Preston North End 0 - 0 Blackburn Rovers This fixture between Preston and Blackburn ended goalless for the first time in 43 years. Both teams struggled to create clear opportunities until the match suddenly came alive just before half-time. Preston goalkeeper Freddie Woodman parried Ryan Hedges’ shot into the path of Tyrhys Dolan, whose half-volley rattled the post. Shortly after, Preston's Sam Greenwood was sent off for a poor challenge on Lewis Baker, yet his side finished the first half on the front foot. Brad Potts forced a near-post save from Rovers keeper Aynsley Pears, who then pulled off a brilliant stop to deny Andy Hughes' header from the resulting corner. At the break, Blackburn manager John Eustace made an attacking switch, bringing on forward Makhtar Gueye for midfielder Baker to exploit their numerical advantage. 6,000 Blackburn fans at Preston Gueye had a tame effort comfortably gathered by Pears, who looked assured as Blackburn's defence held firm.

Championship: Hull City produce astonishing second-half turnaround

Image
Stoke City 1 - 3 Hull City Hull City staged a remarkable second-half comeback, spoiling Narcis Pelach's first match as Stoke City manager and securing Tim Walter’s first win as Tigers boss on his seventh attempt. Stoke appeared to be cruising towards a comfortable victory, leading 1-0 at half-time courtesy of Ben Wilmot’s 30th-minute header. However, Kasey Palmer sparked Hull’s revival with a 63rd-minute equaliser, heading in the rebound after his penalty was saved by Viktor Johansson. This was the first of three Tigers goals in a 16-minute blitz. Substitute Regan Slater capitalised on a Wilmot mistake to fire in a powerful shot from 18 yards in the 77th minute. Just two minutes later, Palmer's weak shot took a fortuitous deflection off Wilmot’s calf and slipped through Johansson’s legs to make it 3-1. EFL Cup: Man United thrash Barnsley

Image
Manchester United 7 - 0 Barnsley Manchester United enjoyed an ideal evening, securing their biggest victory under Erik ten Hag and easing into the EFL Cup last-16 at the expense of a struggling League One Barnsley side. Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and veteran midfielder Christian Eriksen each found the net twice, while Brazilian winger Antony calmly slotted home a first-half penalty. What began as a comfortable performance soon turned into a resounding win. This marked United’s largest triumph since their 9-0 demolition of Southampton in February 2021, back when the stands were empty due to the Covid-19 pandemic. It was undoubtedly a memorable night for Ten Hag's reign, as United hadn’t previously scored five under his management. Eriksen’s late brace only added to the celebration. Barnsley's travelling supporters were vocal throughout, but Darrell Clarke’s side was completely outclassed. Their highlight of the night came in the first half when Clarke himself showe
