Trent Alexander-Arnold to join Real Madrid early

Image
A sign that Real Madrid are taking the Club World Cup seriously? Trent Alexander-Arnold will officially become a Real Madrid player on Sunday 1 June after Liverpool agreed to an early termination of his contract in exchange for a fee. Author | William G Liverpool sources suggest the Spanish club has paid €10m (£8.4m) in a single up-front payment, although figures close to Madrid claim the fee is lower. The payment allows Alexander-Arnold to complete his move in time to feature in the expanded Club World Cup next month. The 26-year-old England international had been due to leave Anfield on a free transfer when his contract expired on 30 June, but had already made clear his intention to depart this summer. He has now signed a six-year deal with Madrid that includes a €1bn (£840m) buy-out clause. Fifa has approved a special transfer window from 1 to 10 June for clubs competing in the month-long Club World Cup, which begins on 14 June in the United States. READ MORE | News from across ...

Southampton 24/25 season review

Image
Let's look at a disastrous season Southampton were relegated back to the Championship Author | Peter Grainger   After winning the promotion play-offs in May, head coach Russell Martin struggled to put together a team that could compete in the Premier League.  Martin was ultimately sacked as Southampton dropped to the bottom of the league in December. On 6 April 2025, Southampton were relegated to the Championship following a 3–1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. They were relegated after 31 games, breaking Derby County's 2007–08 and Huddersfield Town's 2018–19 record for the earliest relegation in Premier League history. The next day, Southampton announced that Ivan Jurić had left his role as manager by mutual consent. Simon Rusk then took interim charge for the last seven games of the season. Match reports ...

Chelsea make history in Poland

Real Betis 1 - 4 Chelsea  Enzo Maresca’s bold tactical reshuffle and astute use of personnel steered Chelsea to victory over Real Betis in the Conference League final. Author | Lewis W Stadium | Stadion WrocĹ‚aw The opening 45 minutes had offered little encouragement for the Premier League side. Betis were deservedly in front at the interval, with Isco orchestrating the first half and providing a no-look assist for Abde Ezzalzouli, who surged through to fire the Spaniards ahead inside nine minutes. But the match flipped after the break. Cole Palmer was afforded greater freedom and, capitalising on the injury-enforced withdrawal of Betis left-back Ricardo RodrĂguez, delivered a commanding display that earned him player of the match honours. Palmer's teasing, dipping delivery from a central area was then expertly glanced in by Enzo Fernández just after the hour mark. But a nervy, disjointed display left them vulnerable, and Everton took full advantage. Revitalised under David Moyes, the visitors were the more organised side throughout and took a deserved lead when Carlos Alcaraz headed home midway through the second half. Tension gripped the home crowd as their side laboured, but relief swept around the ground when word spread that Manchester United were leading Aston Villa at Old Trafford . Confirmation of that result was met with jubilation, with Newcastle ultimately securing fifth place on goal difference, enough to clinch a Champions League berth thanks to the Premier League’s expanded allocation. Villa’s Champions League dreams slip away

Image
Manchester United 2 - 0 Aston Villa  Aston Villa saw their Champions League dreams slip away in dramatic fashion at Old Trafford. Author | Olivia T Stadium | Old Trafford With Newcastle falling 1-0 to Everton, Villa (despite being reduced to ten men) were on course to seal a place in Europe’s top competition. That changed in the 76th minute, when Amad Diallo looped a header over MartĂnez from Bruno Fernandes’ raking diagonal ball. Just moments earlier, Villa thought they had taken the lead through Morgan Rogers. However, the goal was chalked off, with the referee ruling that Rogers had kicked the ball out of Altay Bayındır’s hands. As the whistle had blown before the ball crossed the line, VAR was powerless to review the decision. Unai Emery was incensed. His frustration deepened when Ian Maatsen brought down Diallo late on and Manchester United were awarded a penalty. Christian Eriksen, playing his final game for the club, converted to confirm the win. READ MORE | Visit GM Sup...

The decisive moment came five minutes after the break, when Levi Colwill bundled home from close range. It was enough to ensure Chelsea met the expectations set for them at the start of the campaign.  Maresca admitted afterwards that their summer transfer plans were shaped by which European competition they would be in. The win also provides timely momentum ahead of Chelsea’s appearance in the Europa Conference League final against Real Betis in Poland on Wednesday. For Forest, who battled to survive on the final day last season, this campaign represents significant progress. Despite falling short of a Champions League spot, sevent...

His final tally of 29 goals and 18 assists underlined his enduring brilliance in front of goal. With the title already secured following their emphatic 5-1 victory over Tottenham on 27 April, Arne Slot’s side were able to enjoy the final weeks of the campaign with the pressure off. Sunday's clash at Anfield, played in a carnival atmosphere, provided the chance for fans to savour the achievement. He doubled the lead late on with a crisp finish from the edge of the box, drilling the ball inside the near post to confirm the win. Andoni Iraola’s side, who fell short in their push for European football following a dip in form during the run-in, dominated for long periods. Leicester, meanwhile, ended a dismal season with yet another defensive lapse and now prepare for life back in the Championship. There was a false dawn for the visitors in the first half when Oliver Skipp tucked away a Kasey McAteer cross, only for the goal to be chalked off for offside earlier in the mov...
