Premier League reaction: Southampton relegated

Southampton 0 - 2 Fulham

Let's explore all of the best reaction as Southampton's 11-year stay in the Premier League ended in tame fashion.

Southampton relegated

Aleksandar Mitrovic, making his return from an eight-game ban for pushing referee Chris Kavanagh, sealed Saints' fate with a stooping header after Carlos Vinicius' opener.

You'd have to say it was apt that their relegation should be confirmed at their home ground. They have picked up a poor 10 points out of a possible 57. They will have to improve this form if they want to escape the Championship next season.

What did the Southampton boss say?

Southampton boss Ruben Selles told BBC Match of the Day: “It is a very tough day – for me, for everybody in the dressing room, for the city, for the fans. It has been a tough season for all of us.

We have been fighting not to be relegated from the very beginning, and the day came today. I just want to say thank you to everybody for the support we felt from the very first day."

The Southampton Twitter account also posted the thoughts of their boss.

Southampton board statement

In a statement on the club's website, the Southampton board said:

" Today is a hugely disappointing day for everyone associated with Southampton Football Club. We have fought tirelessly as a club throughout the season, but the Premier League is the most competitive league in the world and our results were simply not good enough to stay there."

What are the Southampton fans saying?

Andrew, a Southampton Season Ticket holder, messaged us on Facebook:   "On the plus side, we made it to the middle of May! The writing was on the wall when we binned off Hassunhutl."

This was a view supported by Daniel, another Saints Season Ticket holder. He added: "We should never have sacked Ralph. It was another premature knee-jerk decision that didn't work out. I have to say thumbs up to Notts Forest who have stuck with their manager. They are not safe by any means but are clearly putting up a good fight."

Ryan added: "We have made a lot of awful decisions over the last few seasons. This is essentially the end result of all those bad decisions. I fear this could be another Sunderland situation if we're not careful."

Another positive day for Fulham.

Given the club's recent reputation for being a yo-you side, many fans thought Fulham would find themselves in a relegation battle. However, it has proven to be a record-breaking campaign for the Londoners. This was their 15th league win of the season. It represents a fine campaign for the team from South London.

Claude, a Fulham fan, told us: "A comfortable win for us. It's just a pity we dropped so many points recently as European qualification would have been a fine reward for the hardwork of Silva and the team."
