PL: Man City thrash Newcastle United

Manchester City 5 - 0 Newcastle

Manchester City shrugged off the disappointment of their Champions League semi-final exit to thrash Newcastle United and open a three-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

City took advantage of Liverpool's draw with Tottenham Hotspur with an impressive response that strengthened their position at the Premier League summit and markedly improved their goal difference.

Chris Wood wasted a glorious early chance for Newcastle to add to City's nerves. They paid the price when Raheem Sterling headed Pep Guardiola's team in front after 19 minutes.

Aymeric Laporte added a second before half-time after Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka fumbled Ilkay Gundogan's volley and Rodri made sure of the victory with a near-post header from Kevin de Bruyne's corner just after the hour mark.

Phil Foden struck in the closing moments before Sterling scored his second and completed the rout with a close-range finish in stoppage time.

Reaction

Let's explore some of the best reaction to City's win performance.

Jack Grealish told the City website: "We always knew there was going be pressure on us, especially after midweek.

"We bounced back perfectly. We stuck together as a unit which was needed. Now we need to try and end the season strongly.

"We just have to go out there and win every game ourselves, we’re in the driving seat. We can’t look at what is going on around us. We just have to go and win every game."

This was the reaction of Newcastle boss Eddie Howe.

One Newcastle fan replied: "We're safe which is the main thing. This game and the remaining two can be learning exercises."
