Transfer News: Henderson joins Forest on loan

Nottingham Forest have announced the signing of Manchester United keeper Dean Henderson on a season-long loan.

Henderson was keen for first-team football after losing out to David de Gea in the battle to be the first choice at Old Trafford.

He is Forest's second major summer signing after Nigeria forward Taiwo Awoniyi was signed from Union Berlin.

Henderson has kept 17 clean sheets in 49 Premier League games but has not played a top-flight match since May 2021.

Reports seem to indicate that there is no option to buy within the loan agreement and that Forest are covering his full wages for the entire season.

His last loan spell was at Sheffield United during their fairly successful first season back in the Premier League. Will he have a similar impact at Forest?

Henderson, who won his solitary England cap in 2020, is understood to be targeting a spot in Gareth Southgate's World Cup squad later this year.

Brice Samba has been Forest's first-choice keeper for the past three seasons. The 28-year-old is under contract until 2023, but talks over a new deal have stalled. Who will be Forest's number one keeper as they prepare for their first season in the Premier League since 1998/1999?

Reaction

Watch below to hear Henderson's first words following his loan move to the City Ground. One United fan said: "Man United fan here. Although he can make some mistakes, I think he will thrive with u lot. Good luck to him and Forest."

Forest Head Coach told the club website: "“Dean is a top-class goalkeeper and he’s hungry for more opportunities to play and to continue to prove himself at the highest level. He’s played multiple times in the Premier League but has also experienced the Champions League and international football.

“Again, Dean is someone who has attracted a lot of interest from other clubs and we’re delighted that he has chosen to Nottingham Forest for our return to the Premier League.”
