Premier League: Forest ride luck but earn crucial win

Image
Sheffield United 1 - 3 Nottingham Forest Nottingham Forest took a big step towards Premier League survival by beating already-relegated Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.  Callum Hudson-Odoi scored two goals and Ryan Yates added another to secure a vital three points for Forest.  Ben Brereton Diaz's penalty put the home side ahead in the first half before Hudson-Odoi's superb curling effort brought Forest level midway through the game. The Blades then responded well, but missed a host of first-half chances and were punished when Ryan Yates put the visitors ahead with a thumping effort six minutes after the break. Premier League news and stories: 2023/2024 Hudson-Odoi then made sure of the victory by cutting inside and bending the ball past Blades goalkeeper Wes Foderingham into the far corner, ensuring Forest's survival hopes remain in their own hands going into the last couple of weeks of the season. The Blades want the season to end now Sheffield United have set some

EFL: Ipswich promoted to Premier League

Image
Ipswich Town 2 - 0 Huddersfield Town Ipswich Town soared back into the Premier League by cruising to a win over Huddersfield at Portman Road. Wes Burns gave the home side a first-half lead. This was then doubled by Omari Hutchinson early in the second with a shot from the edge of the penalty area. Click here to discover more news from the English Football League. Ipswich have finished the Championship season on 96 points. This is just one less than champions Leicester. They have become the first team since Southampton in 2011-12 to go from League One to the Premier League in successive seasons.  McKenna is also only the fifth manager in the club's history to win promotion to the top flight. This follows Alf Ramsey - later Sir Alf - in 1961, Bill McGarry in 1968, John Lyall in 1992 and George Burley in 2000. He is certainly is some great company there. From a Huddersfield perspective, the result also confirmed that they will be playing in League One next season. They were a Pre

The Big Discussion: Young up-and-coming stars

This article will explore some of the most exciting talents in the world at the moment.  Will any of them be on the move this summer? Warren Zaïre-Emery - PSG Warren Zaïre-Emery, a 17-year-old football player, has achieved a remarkable feat by becoming a regular player at one of Europe's biggest clubs. The midfielder has already made more than 50 first-team appearances for the French champions and is also a part of France's senior squad. You wouldn't expect him to leave PSG just yet but many clubs from England and Spain will be paying close attention to his development. Eduardo Camavinga - Real Madrid Given the amount of games he's played, you would have forgotten that Camavinga is still relatively young. His knack for playing in several positions across the pitch must make him a dream player for Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid.  Julian Rijkhoff - Ajax Ajax are renowned for producing technically gifted midfielders and wingers, but less well-known for creating genu

UECL: Villa's trophy hopes severely dented

Image
Aston Villa 2 - 4 Olympiakos "Everything that could have gone wrong, did." Those were the words of one Aston Villa fan as their chances of reaching a first European final since 1982 were severely dented against Olympiakos. The star man on the night for the visitors was Ayoub El Kaabi. He scored a hat-trick, netting twice early on. Ollie Watkins then reduced the deficit for Unai Emery's side and Moussa Diaby equalised moments after the interval. Villa Park was rocking at this point, creating an atmosphere that had not been seen at the famous old stadium for many years.  However, Olympiakos roared back into a two-goal lead with a El Kaabi penalty and a deflected strike from Santiago Hezze.  Douglas Luiz missed a late penalty, meaning Villa must overturn a two-goal deficit in the second leg.  The Greek Super League side have actually never reached a major European final. They played without fear and attacking verve as they pressed and harassed Villa into defensive mist

UCL: Dortmund are 90 minutes from Wembley

Image
Borussia Dortmund 1 - 0 PSG Niclas Fullkrug scored a brilliant goal in the first half as Borussia Dortmund beat Paris St-Germain 1-0 in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final. You watch the highlights of the match in the video below. The footage is from the TNT Sports YouTube account. The German international used his right foot to bring down a long ball before firing home with his left foot to give Dortmund a 36th-minute lead. That would prove to be the only goal of the night. After a poor first half which perhaps lacked the quality of the previous night's semi final, PSG missed several chances to equalise in the second. Kylian Mbappe curled an effort off the inside of the post before Achraf Hakimi narrowly missed his chance a few minutes later. There were still opportunities for PSG to equalise and take a 1-1 draw back to Paris buf they lacked a bit of quality at times. Mbappe looked determined throughout and he clearly wants to end his time in France with PSG

EFL: Ipswich move closer to promotion

Image
Coventry City 1 - 2 Ipswich Town Ipswich regained their winning form when it mattered the most and claimed a victory at Coventry to move within one point of promotion back to the Premier League.  After earning only three points in four games, the Tractor Boys held their nerve and just about managed to get the better of the FA Cup semi-finalists . Kieffer Moore scored the first goal of the match in the first half, but Haji Wright's 19th goal of the season cancelled it out.  However, Cameron Burgess' scrambled goal in the 69th minute put Ipswich three points clear of third-placed Leeds United. If Ipswich manage to secure a draw at home against Huddersfield on Saturday, they will bring top-flight football back to Suffolk for the first time in 22 years. A more detailed look at what happened Ipswich went head just eight minutes into the match. Wes Burns opened up the Sky Blues defence down the right and pulled the ball back for Moore, who fired home a powerful low right-foot shot

UCL: Exciting first leg leaves things all to play for

Image
Bayern Munich 2 - 2 Real Madrid It was an intriguing and exciting first leg in Germany After soaking up immense Manchester City pressure in their quarter-final second leg, but eventually progressing to the semi-finals , Real Madrid were on the back foot again from the very beginning in Bavaria as Bayern created a succession of chances in the opening exchanges. Real Madrid's visiting goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who saved two penalties in the quarter-final shoot-out against City denied Leroy Sané in the first minute with a smart save using his left leg. Sané was constantly involved in Bayern's attacks and his clever back-heel, after a dart into the middle from the right wing, found Harry Kane in the area . However, the striker's curling shot was too close to the goalkeeper. This Bayern duo teamed up again a minute after their previous attempt. This time, Harry Kane played a well-measured pass from just inside the Real Madrid half to find Sané on the left side of the goal. H

The most dramatic races to the Premier League title

Image
We all love a dramatic end to the season Let's explore some of the best and most iconic title races in the history of English football. Will the 2024 race for the title match any of those listed below? Leicester City, Tottenham and Arsenal in 2016 An odd one to choose perhaps, but this was a fascinating title race. It was a two-horse race for a period, but Spurs finished third. Leicester won the title that season thanks to the form of former Non-League player Jamie Vardy. Many described it as the greatest-ever sporting achievement.  Following this title win, Leicester players struggled to match what they achieved during that season. They were even relegated in 2023. They quickly recovered to win the Championship in 2024, once again being inspired by Vardy. EFL: Vardy fires Foxes to Championship title

Image
Preston North End 0 - 3 Leicester City  Two goals from Jamie Vardy helped Leicester City sealed the Championship title as the Foxes cruised to a crowning victory at Preston North End. Leicester kept the majority of possession in the game’s early stages and created the first chance of note in the 15th minute when Freddie Woodman came out to deny Vardy an opening goal. Jamie  Vardy's goals had previously fired the Foxes to a Premier League title and FA Cup glory. He eventually added to his reputation as a Leicester City icon with a goal in each half to take his overall season tally to 20 in all competitions. Kasey McAteer then added a third with for a Leicester side that has almost dominated this match from start to finish. They have become the fourth club – after Burnley, Fulham and Norwich - in as many years to make an immediate return to the Premier League Championship title winners following relegation. Scotland: Celtic remain in charge of title race

Image
Dundee 1 - 2 Celtic A double from James Forrest helped Celtic beat Dundee and maintained their three-point Scottish Premiership lead. A screen grab from a Twitter video showing Celtic players celebrating. Forrest marked his return to the Celtic starting line-up with a stunning first-half volley from the edge of the box and low drive midway through the second period. Dundee got back into the game after Adam Idah deflected an Antonio Portales shot past Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart. Despite some late pressure, they were unable to deny the visitors victory. Despite another win for Rangers, the title is still Celtic's to lose with four rounds of fixtures to play and the Old Firm still to meet.  Dundee remain two points behind fifth-placed St Mirren and remain in contention for a Europa Conference qualifying place. Should they achieve that, it would surely be the best season in their recent history.  You can find out what the Celtic manager thought by watching the video below. The int

Premier League: Arsenal hold on against Spurs

Image
Tottenham 2 - 3 Arsenal Arsenal secured a crucial victory against Tottenham in the highly-anticipated North London derby.  Tottenham  The Gunners had a three-goal lead by half-time thanks to Tottenham's defensive flaws. They had an own-goal from Højbjerg in addition to strikes from Saka and Havertz to thank for the comfortable lead.  However, Spurs got back into the game when David Raya made a poor clearance, allowing Cristian Romero to score.  In the closing minutes of the game, Son Heung-min scored from the penalty spot after Declan Rice fouled Ben Davies, causing nerves anxiety among Arsenal fans. In the end, Arsenal held on to their lead and continued to push forward in their pursuit of the Premier League title. EFL: Hull dent Ipswich promotion hopes

Image
Hull City 3 - 3 Ipswich Town After falling behind three times, Hull City fought back three times to draw 3-3 with Championship promotion-chasers Ipswich thanks to a late goal by substitute Noah Ohio. In their quest for automatic promotion, two stunning Omari Hutchinson goals seemed to have sealed all three points for the Tractor Boys. Ipswich started strong with George Hirst scoring the opening goal but their lead was short-lived as Ozan Tufan equalized. Hutchinson then scored a stunning goal with an unstoppable curling shot just before half-time, putting Ipswich ahead again. Who's getting promoted to the Premier League? Transfer Rumour: Walker wanted by Bayern Munich

Image
Bayern Munich want to sign another English player It is believed that they want to sign Kyle Walker from Manchester City Bayern came close to signing the Manchester City's star player last summer. However, Pep Guardiola convinced him to stay at the 11th hour and he signed a new contract, potentially keeping him at the Etihad until June 2026. He has proved to be an important player in Manchester City's quest for a record-breaking fourth successive Premier League title. Earlier this season, when Kevin De Bruyne was injured, Kyle Walker took over as the captain. Walker has since been in excellent form, which has reignited Bayern's interest in him. This video from Monsif Attoui would perhaps explain why Bayern interested in signing Walker despite his age. They will be hoping to put together a team that can bring the title back from Leverkusen next season.  Both City and the player in question are aware that the Bundesliga giants are interested in signing the right back du

Women's Champions League: Barca end Chelsea dreams

Image
Chelsea 0 - 2 Barcelona Barcelona won 2-1 on aggregate  Chelsea's hopes of making it to the Women's Champions League final in manager Emma Hayes' final season at the club were crushed with a defeat by Barcelona at a sold-out Stamford Bridge.  Despite leading 1-0 from the semi-final first leg, Chelsea was unable to hold onto their advantage as holders Barca turned the tide in their favour. Referee Iuliana Demetrescu made two crucial decisions that went against the Blues.  Firstly, she issued a second booking to Chelsea defender Kadeisha Buchanan within four minutes, leaving the hosts with only 10 players on the field just before the hour mark.  A history of women's football (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) Secondly, she awarded a penalty to Barcelona for a contentious foul on Aitana Bonmati, which Fridolina Rolfo converted. Bonmati had earlier cancelled out Chelsea's aggregate lead with a deflected strike off Buchanan, and her dramatic fall in the box under conta

Premier League: Another strange performance from Manchester United

Manchester United 1 - 1 Burnley Zeki Amdouni scored a late penalty to grab what could he a priceless point for relegation-threatened Burnley in the Premier League at Old Trafford. Despite another unconvincing display from Manchester United, they did look well set for victory thanks to Antony's well-taken 79th-minute effort. Then Burnley got a penalty  Although the referee John Brooks managed to miss the foul in real time, unlike against Wolves the video assistant referee, Peter Bankes, stepped in. Substitute Amdouni managed to send the keeper the wrong way and earn Burnley this point  This result moved Burnley to within two points of fourth-bottom Nottingham Forest, whom they play at Turf Moor on the final day of the season.  There could still be a dramatic fight for survival with Burnley, Luton and Forest all scrambling to avoid relegation to the Championship.  You can watch the highlights of the match in the video below. At the start of the match, both sides struggled to find a way out of midfield, but the South Korean forward eventually netted with the help of a deflection off defender Teden Mengi just 18 seconds after Carlton Morris was unable to convert Luton's best opportunity of the opening 45 minutes, heading straight at Jose Sa. Wolves showed their intent after the break and doubled their advantage in just five minutes when Toti Gomes found space to head in at the far post. Gary O'Neil's sid

EFL: Derby County promoted

Image
Derby County 2 - 0 Carlisle United Derby County secured promotion to the Championship after a confident and assured final-day win against already-relegated Carlisle United at a jubilant Pride Park Stadium. The Rams required only a draw against the division's bottom side to end their two-year stay in League One. However, Max Bird's powerful and curving shot from outside the box, which found the back of the net after just five minutes, had Derby County supporters singing and celebrating to the tune of 'we are going up'. James Collins then sealed Paul Warne's side's promotion with a composed and close-range finish on the hour mark to complete the victory. This marks 50-year-old Warne's fourth time leading a team to promotion from League One, having previously achieved this feat three times with Rotherham United as they alternated between the second and third tiers of English football. Premier League: West Ham hold Liverpool to a draw

Image
West Ham United 2 - 2 Liverpool  Liverpool's title hopes were dented again after Michail Antonio scored to rescue a point for West Ham at the London Stadium. Jarrod Bowen opened the scoring just before the break when he rose highest to meet Mohammed Kudus' cross. At this point, Liverpool were showing little evidence that their Merseyside derby loss in midweek had done much in the way of spurring them on. Klopp's side were much improved in the second half and Andy Robertson equalised when he scored from Luis Diaz's low pass into the penalty area. Liverpool were then rewarded again for their pressure when Cody Gakpo's effort from a corner deflected off Angelo Ogbonna, Tomas Soucek and Alphonse Areola before finding the back of the net. Antonio's fine header put the Hammers back on level terms two minutes before Liverpool brought on Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian couldn't win the game for Liverpool and appeared to have fallen out with the manager.  You can w
