Premier League news: Steven Gerrard sacked by Aston Villa

Steven Gerrard has been sacked as manager of Aston Villa.

The announcement came just 90 minutes after they suffered a 3-0 defeat against Fulham at Craven Cottage last night.

Villa are currently out of the releation zone only on goals scored and. During the defeat at Fulham, the travelling support were repeatedly booing Gerrard. The club decided to take swift action. The ex Liverpool player has been in the job for less than a year. He has been unable to make a success of his first management role in English football.

In November 2021, we reported on Gerrard being appointed as manager of Villa. Despite the initial excitement, it has never really gone according to plan for both the player and the club.

This is looking like it will be a very difficult time for Aston Villa, and looks like it will be first-team coach Aaron Danks that takes charge when they play their next game at the weekend.

They will hope to make a swift appointment and have considered an ambitious move for Mauricio Pochettino. It remains to be seen if the former Tottenham manager would be willing to enter a relegation battle.

After a more prromising performance against Chelsea, it looked like they had turned something of a corner despite the eventual defeat. However, this awful display was the end for the former Rangers manager.

Villa reaction

A club spokesman said: “We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and commitment and wish him well for the future.”
