Premier League: Simms rescues point for Everton

Chelsea 2 - 2 Everton

This could prove to be a very important point for Everton.

Chelsea 2 - 2 Everton

Ellis Simms scored his first Everton goal to earn Sean Dyche's side a crucial point. They came from behind twice to draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Everton's improved resilience under Dyche was on show again. The 22-year-old local product Simms was the hero with a superb late equaliser to wreck Chelsea's hopes of a fourth consecutive win.

Chelsea broke down Everton's resistance seven minutes after the break when the excellent Joao Felix drilled home a low drive. However, they were pegged back when Abdoulaye Doucoure scrambled home an equaliser from a corner after 69 minutes.

The away side were only on level terms for seven minutes. Kai Havertz scored from the spot after Reece James was fouled by James Tarkowski. However, there was to be a late twist in the tale. Dyche had put Simms on to rescue a point, and he delivered in style with a powerful run and finish a minute from time. What a moment for the young player.

The youngster makes an impact at last for Everton.

Simms has had loan spells at Blackpool, Hearts and Sunderland. During an impressive period at the Stadium of Light, he scored 7 goals in 17 matches. He was recalled to Goodison Park in January as then-manager Frank Lampard sought to bolster his attacking options.

He made just one Everton appearance prior to this season but has featured in six games since returning to his boyhood club. This includes four under Dyche.

Simms posted on Twitter: "A special moment to score my first Everton and Premier League goal. Also, an important point away from home. "

An Everton fan replied: "What a brilliant finish lad and the way you went past a World Class defender like Koulibaly was sublime. That goal will do wonders for your confidence and proves you are Premier League Level lad. Congratulations!"

Chelsea miss a chance to gain ground on the teams above them.

The home side will be hugely frustrated at the manner in which they allowed Everton to come back twice and take a point away from Stamford Bridge. They remain in 10th place on 38 points and will probably need to win the Champions League to make sure that they are playing in Europe's premier competition next season.

One Chelsea fan told us: "Another poor Chelsea show, so negative, get the ball and stop and think, no speed and thrust, Potter may have done a good job at Brighton. However, he is definitely not a top coach. The last Everton goal was a direct result of taking off Fofana. Why change the back three with 10 mins to go?"

Another Chelsea fan messaged us on Facebook: "We didn't play particularly bad but we're so sloppy at times. Those Champions League matches against Real Madrid have suddenly become even more important now."
