Image
Celtic have confirmed Wilfried Nancy as their new head coach. The club have brought him in from Columbus Crew, concluding a search of more than a month for a permanent successor to Brendan Rodgers. Columbus said an agreement had been reached for Nancy to move to Glasgow for an undisclosed fee. The MLS side added that assistant coach Kwame Ampadu, assistant and fitness coach Jules Gueguen and video performance coach Maxime Chalier will also make the switch. Rodgers resigned on 27 October after a 3-1 defeat to Premiership leaders Hearts. Martin O'Neill was installed as interim manager, with Shaun Maloney assisting him. Rangers on verge of Europa League elimination

Image
Rangers 1 - 1 Braga Rangers claimed their first point of this Europa League campaign but will reflect on a wasted chance after a mistake from Nasser Djiga cost them victory in a draw with 10-man Braga. Author | Mark Lee Stadium | Ibrox James Tavernier put the Scottish Premiership side in front from the penalty spot deep into first-half stoppage time, and their position strengthened when Rodrigo Zalazar was sent off for appearing to move his head towards Nicolas Raskin. Yet Djiga’s misjudged header from a throw into the Rangers area dropped invitingly for Gabri Martinez, who swept in the equaliser and left Danny Rohl’s side without the win they badly needed. The result brings an end to their run of seven consecutive European defeats, but with daunting trips to Ferencvaros and Porto to come, either side of a home meeting with Ludogorets, their prospects of progressing remain slim with just one point from five matches. A further setback arrived in stoppage time when Mohamed Diomande w...

Celtic comeback stuns Feyenoord

Image
Feyenoord 1 - 3 Celtic Celtic produced a stirring response in Rotterdam, overturning an early setback to secure a notable Europa League victory over Feyenoord. Author | Sean M Stadium | De Kuip Celtic corner It marked their first away success in European competition since November 2021, ending a run of 15 matches without a win on the road. Ayase Ueda had put the hosts in front with a composed finish, yet the Scottish champions recovered impressively as Yang Hyun jun and Reo Hatate struck before the interval. Benjamin Nygren added a powerful third late on to settle any lingering tension among the travelling support. The result offered a timely lift after their heavy defeat by Midtjylland in the previous round. Martin O'Neill’s side were forced to absorb pressure at times but held their shape well and made their chances count, strengthening their position as the Northern Irishman's interim spell edges towards its conclusion. Feyenoord have now been beaten in four of their five gr...

Scotland are going to the World Cup!

Image
Scotland 4 - 2 Denmark A remarkable night in Glasgow.  Author |  Sean M Stadium |  Hampden Park A pair of injury time goals from Kieran Tierney and Kenny McLean handed Scotland a dramatic victory over Denmark and sealed their return to the World Cup for the first time since 1998. Scott McTominay set the tone at Hampden Park with a superb bicycle kick after only three minutes, although Rasmus Hojlund soon pulled Denmark level to stall the early surge of optimism. Scotland needed all three points to finish top of Group C and claim an automatic place at the finals. Lawrence Shankland and Patrick Dorgu exchanged goals after the break, but Tierney and McLean produced two remarkable late strikes that sent the home support into raptures as Scott Clarke’s side held their nerve.  A closer analysis of what happened   Inside three minutes, Scott McTominay rose astonishingly high to steer the ball beyond Kasper Schmeichel with an audacious overhead finish. Scotland suffer defeat but retain hopes of World Cup qualification

Image
Greece 3 - 2 Scotland Scotland find themselves within a single match of their first World Cup appearance since 1998, after Denmark’s draw with Belarus kept an unlikely route open on a breathless night Author | Sean M Stadium | Stadio Georgios Karaiskáki Just after the hour in Piraeus, Scotland trailed 3-0 to a Greece side already out of contention, while Denmark were edging ahead against Belarus in Copenhagen. Goals gifted far too cheaply to Tasos Bakasetas, Konstantinos Karetsas and Christos Tzolis appeared to end any realistic hope of automatic qualification, leaving March’s play-offs looming. Then the script tilted. Belarus equalised, and within three minutes Ben Gannon-Doak rifled in his first goal for Scotland at the very moment Nikita Demchenko put the group’s bottom side into a scarcely believable lead in Copenhagen. As word filtered through to the Scotland bench, Ryan Christie headed in to reduce the deficit, on a night littered with narrow escapes, missed sitters and no sh...

Roma ease to win over Rangers at Ibrox

Image
Rangers 0 - 2 Roma Rangers endured another punishing Europa League night as Roma inflicted a fourth straight defeat in this season’s competition. Author | Mark Lee Stadium | Ibrox Danny Rohl’s team were booed off at half-time, two goals down and fortunate the margin was not greater. Only Jack Butland’s sharp goalkeeping and some wasteful Roma finishing spared further damage. Lorenzo Pellegrini’s exquisite strike ten minutes before the interval effectively settled the contest, the captain guiding home after a flowing Roma move. Earlier, his teasing corner had been glanced on by Matias Soule, the Argentine forward heading into an empty net to give the visitors the lead. At 2-0, memories resurfaced of the heavy Champions League qualifying defeat by Brugge in August. Rangers rarely troubled Mile Svilar, though Djeidi Gassama’s lively runs at least forced some defensive scrambling from the Italians. Aberdeen pick up first Conference League point

Image
AEK Larnaca 0 - 0 Aberdeen Aberdeen claimed their first point of the Conference League campaign after battling to a goalless draw against AEK Larnaca in Cyprus. Author | Chris Thomas Stadium | AEK Arena George Karapatakis Jimmy Thelin’s side had endured a tough start to the group, losing 3-2 to Shakhtar Donetsk before a heavy 6-0 defeat to AEK Athens. Larnaca, meanwhile, came into the game buoyed by victories over AZ Alkmaar and FA Cup holders Crystal Palace. Despite that contrast in form, Aberdeen produced a composed and disciplined performance, limiting their hosts to few clear chances and threatening on the break. The home side came closest in the first half when defender Hrvoje Milicevic struck the base of the post from distance before curling another effort narrowly wide moments later. Aberdeen carved out opportunities of their own through Jack Milne, who dragged a shot wide and later headed over, while Jesper Karlsson’s deflected strike also flew just past the post. The secon...

Who should be the next manager at Celtic?

Image
This is the biggest question being asked by Celtic fans. Since Brendan Rodgers resigned as Celtic manager on Monday, several candidates have emerged as the Northern Irishman's long-term successor. Author |  Sean M Celtic moved quickly to appoint former manager Martin O'Neill as interim boss - 20 years after his first stint in charge of the Glasgow club ended. Sunday's 3-1 defeat at table-toppers Hearts was Celtic's second successive Premiership loss, leaving them eight points adrift in second place, while they have won just two of their last seven matches across all competitions. O'Neill, 73, has played down suggestions he could take up the job on a full-time basis - insisting he is just "keeping the seat warm". Several candidates have already started to emerge for the position, including some names that have strong links to Parkhead. From Super Local Sports News | Live updates from a press conference in Glasgow as Martin O'Neill speaks to the me...

A season of managerial changes across the continent

Image
We have seen a number of managerial changes already this season Let's have a look at some of these changes Author | George B Of course, some of these changes have been welcomed fans (see Rangers fans below) and others haven't.  Onto manager number three at Nottingham Forest In September, Nottingham Forest announced they had dismissed head coach Nuno EspĂrito Santo . This news came just three games into the new season. Almost within a matter of hours, he was replaced by former Celtic and Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou.   This doesn't go well. After less than 40 days in charge, Postecoglou was dismissed by the club after their 3-0 home defeat to Chelsea at the City Ground. This set a new record for the shortest reign of any permanent Premier League manager, surpassing Les Reed’s ill-fated spell at Charlton Athletic. West Ham turn to Nuno after poor start to the season On September 27th, former Brighton and Chelsea boss was dismissed by West Ham United wit...

What's going on at Celtic Park?

Image
Brendan Rodgers has stepped down as Celtic manager Former boss Martin O’Neill set to take charge on a temporary basis. Author | Richard Lennon Super Local Sports News | Glasgow | Scottish Premiership | Rodgers resigns as Celtic manager with Martin O'Neill to return https://t.co/4iWLlh2RGe — European Super Football (@ESFootballNews) October 27, 2025 Rodgers, 52, returned to Glasgow in 2023 for a second spell in the dugout and delivered back to back league titles, adding to the championships he claimed in 2017 and 2018. Yet his departure comes with Celtic already eight points adrift of early leaders Hearts after just nine matches of the campaign. The club confirmed that Rodgers tendered his resignation, which was accepted immediately. Dermot Desmond, Celtic’s principal shareholder, later issued a strongly worded statement accusing the outgoing manager of behaviour that was divisive, misleading and self serving. The immediate next steps for the club O’Neill, now 73, previously le...

Celtic fight back to beat Sturm Graz

Image
Celtic 2 - 1 Sturm Graz Celtic mounted an impressive second-half surge to secure their first Europa League victory of the campaign and overcome 10-man Sturm Graz. Author |  Sean M Stadium |  Celtic Park Celtic corner Liam Scales and Benjamin Nygren struck in quick succession as Brendan Rodgers’ side finally found their rhythm, much to the delight of a relieved Celtic Park crowd. The Scottish champions entered the night under scrutiny, with only a single point from their opening two group fixtures and a league defeat by Dundee still fresh in the mind. Given testing away trips to Midtjylland and Feyenoord looming next month, the need for three points here felt crucial. Closer analysis of what happened in Glasgow Pre-match huddle There was early frustration, followed by Kelechi Iheanacho limping off within minutes. It did appear to be a worrying sign. Celtic’s energy and ambition were clear, but their end product remained elusive, even as they carved out a series of clear...

There was no 'new manager bounce' for Rangers

Image
Brann 3 - 0 Rangers Danny Rohl’s introduction as Rangers head coach brought little respite to the beleaguered Scottish side. Author | Mark Lee  Stadium | Brann Stadion A sharp and composed Brann eased to victory and left Rangers rooted to the bottom of the 36-team league.  Emil Kornvig and Jacob Sorensen struck either side of the interval to take advantage of Rangers’ wastefulness, before a late finish from the lively Noah Holm deepened the gloom for the visitors in Bergen. Rohl arrived only three days earlier, so a rapid transformation was never likely, yet this outing served as a reminder of the ongoing problems that have haunted Rangers throughout a troubled campaign. There were early signs of hope  Rangers opened with urgency and purpose, pressing high and carving out an early opening as Youssef Chermiti could not make clean contact with a deft Joe Rothwell ball. Jack Butland was kept busy as the visitors drifted back into old habits, producing a series of sto...

Danny Rohl appointed head coach of Rangers

Image
There will be a new head coach at Rangers after a chaotic few weeks at Ibrox. Rangers have brought an end to their lengthy search for a new head coach by appointing Danny Rohl, the former Sheffield Wednesday manager. Author |  Mark Lee We can today confirm the appointment of Danny Röhl as men’s first-team head coach. Full Details ⬇️ — Rangers Football Club (@RangersFC) October 20, 2025 Russell Martin was dismissed after 17 games on 5 October, with Rangers subsequently holding unproductive talks with former manager Steven Gerrard, Rohl and ex-Ibrox defender Kevin Muscat. Negotiations with Muscat, who is close to winning the Chinese Super League with Shanghai Port, broke down, reopening the door for Rohl. He has now signed an initial two-and-a-half-year contract. Why has it taken so long? Rohl managed Sheffield Wednesday from October 2023 until July 2025, having previously held coaching roles with RB Leipzig, Southampton, Bayern Munich and the German national team. Gerrard ...

It was a nervy win for Scotland over Belarus

Image
Scotland 2 - 1 Belarus With supporters expecting goals against a beleaguered Belarus side who had already conceded 13 times in Group C, Scotland managed only two. Author |  Sean M Stadium |  Hampden Park It might have been a far more uncomfortable evening for Steve Clarke, who was taking charge of his record 72nd match as men’s head coach. Evgeni Malashevich’s composed finish for what would have been a Belarus equaliser was ruled out following a VAR review, and Hleb Kuchko’s injury-time effort reduced the deficit with just minutes remaining. There were moments in the second half, with the score still 1-0, when unease spread around Hampden Park. Belarus were moving the ball confidently while Scotland sat deep, prompting boos from the stands. Those jeers returned at full time, mingling with scattered applause. It was a reaction born of frustration that had simmered from the start as Belarus played with more intent than many expected. Scotland’s smash-and-grab win over Greece...

A vital win for Scotland in qualifying campaign

Image
Scotland 3 -  1 Greece Scotland moved closer to a World Cup play-off place as Lewis Ferguson scored his first international goal to inspire a dramatic comeback against a dominant Greece at Hampden. Author | Sean M Stadium | Hampden Park In his record-equalling 71st game in charge, head coach Steve Clarke’s side sought revenge for their Nations League relegation at the hands of Greece at the same stadium in March. For more than an hour, Scotland struggled against the visitors, who looked certain to be ahead by at least three goals before Roma left-back Kostas Tsimikas converted a rebound just after the hour. The Tartan Army voiced their frustration loudly, but Ryan Christie quickly restored parity from a corner, with his effort surviving a lengthy VAR review, setting the stage for a remarkable turnaround. Ferguson then struck from close range following a scrappy free-kick with 10 minutes remaining, turning tension into euphoria as Clarke’s side seized a priceless lead. The victo...

Is the Scotland national team on the verge of history?

Image
Scotland v Greece Preview A win here would be a huge statement of intent from Scotland as they look to secure a place in next summer’s World Cup. Author | Alan White Stadium | Hampden Park Let's explore where Scotland's game against Greece might be won and if they have to what it takes to reach their first World Cup since 1998. Fortress Hampden? Hampden Park has history, but it is not always easy to say it has heart and soul when Scotland play there. There have been thunderous exceptions, of course. The 2-0 victory over Spain in March 2023 , complete with Rodri’s tears, remains unforgettable, as does the storm-lashed triumph over Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s Georgia a few months later, inspired by Scott McTominay. Scotland v Spain | Euro 2024 Qualifying An arena unloved by many, Hampden still has the capacity to shake on its best nights. Scotland will need one of those on Thursday, when Greece arrive in Glasgow desperate to revive their own World Cup hopes while denting those of the...

Five managers in four years | Why do Rangers keep getting it wrong?

Image
Another season. Another sacking of a Rangers manager. Why do they keep getting it wrong and how can they avoid making same mistakes again? Author | Mark Lee With champagne dripping from his hair and a 2020-21 Scottish Premiership winner's medal around his neck, then manager Steven Gerrard urged Rangers to "fix the roof while the sun is shining". Four years on, the roof remains in disrepair and the sunshine has long faded. Since that title triumph, Rangers have gone through four managers: Gerrard, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Michael Beale and Philippe Clement, before reaching Martin. Under Van Bronckhorst, the club came agonisingly close to European glory, losing the Europa League final on penalties before lifting the Scottish Cup days later. He departed with Rangers nine points adrift of Celtic the following season. Beale and Clement both started brightly but their tenures quickly unravelled. Beale was dismissed with Rangers seven points behind Celtic; Clement’s side we...

Rangers' rotten start to the season continues

Image
Sturm Graz 2 - 1 Rangers Rangers’ troubled start to the season deepened with a second successive Europa League defeat, this time against Austrian champions Sturm Graz. Author | Mark Lee Stadium | Merkur Arena View from the away end A stoppage-time winner at Livingston on Sunday had finally given Russell Martin ’s side their first Premiership victory at the seventh attempt, but any sense of momentum was quickly undone by Tomi Horvat ’s early strike. Rangers contributed to their own downfall once again. James Tavernier’s careless throw-in deep inside his own half was punished swiftly, the ball worked back and fired beyond the uncertain Jack Butland. The defence as a whole was culpable for the second. A precise free-kick sliced through a static backline and Otar Kiteishvili, the Georgian international, finished decisively before half-time. Braga stun Celtic after VAR controversy

Image
Celtic 0 - 2 Braga Celtic suffered further European disappointment as goals in each half and a controversial disallowed equaliser earned Braga victory in what was a chaotic encounter. Author |  Sean M Stadium |  Celtic Park Kick-off Kasper Schmeichel had an error-strewn game in goal and failed to keep out Ricardo Horta 's early long-range effort, which stunned the Celtic Park crowd into silence. The Dane then did well to keep out a late shot but was helpless when the ball bounced off Gabri Martinez in a botched clearance and rebounded into the net to seal all the points. After their Champions League qualification failure against Kairat Almaty , and an opening Europa League draw with Red Star Belgrade , this continued Celtic's disappointing start to their European campaign. In fact, so sharp has been the drop-off since last season, that Brendan Rodgers ' side may struggle to qualify for the latter stages of the Europa League unless they can find their way again, and q...

Rangers' abject start to the season continues

Image
Rangers 0 - 1 Genk Rangers’ woeful start to the season continued as Oh Hyeon-gyu’s goal, combined with Mohamed Diomande’s first-half red card, handed Genk a Europa League victory. Author |  Mark Lee Stadium |  Ibrox Kick-off in Glasgow Under-pressure head coach Russell Martin was seeking successive wins for the first time, but his side were second-best for long periods against a Belgian side who squandered numerous opportunities. In recent seasons, this competition has offered Rangers a welcome distraction from domestic struggles, but it quickly became apparent that even that would elude them this time. The result added to Martin’s mounting frustrations, highlighting his inability to generate momentum or positivity. Discipline issues cost Russell Martin’s side Rangers were already on the back foot before Diomande lunged recklessly at Zakaria El Ouahdi just before half-time. A straight red card was fully justified. Earlier in the match, John Souttar had appeared to provide a ...
