Premier League: Man United and Leeds United produce a classic

Manchester United 2 - 2 Leeds United

Man United fought their way back from being two goals down to take a point against Leeds United at Old Trafford.

Premier League 2022/23, Matchday 8 - Manchester United 2:2 Leeds United - Old Trafford, Manchester - February 8, 2023

Marcus Rashford and substitute Jadon Sancho levelled Wilfried Gnonto’s first-minute strike and Raphael Varane’s own goal to move Erik ten Hag’s men three points ahead of Newcastle United in the Premier League table.

The Reds got back into the game after a difficult 60 minutes. They recovered from the deficit with well-worked counter-attacks and a never-say-die attitude, epitomised by Luke Shaw, who was instrumental in Sancho’s goal to level the clash.

After that, United dominated. The Leeds goal lived a charmed life at times. Fred and Fernandes missed efforts that could have brought the Old Trafford house down. Instead, Leeds held out for five minutes of stoppage time, doing well to kill our momentum on occasion, and will be the more pleased of the two sides with the outcome. What will happen when the sides meet again on Sunday?

Reaction

We spoke to a number of fans from both clubs who were all happy and disappointed with the result. Liam, a Manchester United Season Ticket holder, said: "We were poor at times, but you have to be happy with a draw after being 2-0 down. Good performance for the last 30 minutes."

George was full of praise for the returning Jadon Sancho: "The way Old Trafford exploded when Sancho scores, delighted to see him return and score an important goal for the team."

A Leeds fan known affectionately as 'the G' was unhappy with his side defended near the end of the game. He told us: "I was wondering why Adams was mad at Sommerville on that second goal. Sommerville and Ayling just dropped off their man. It’s easy to see how there was a breakdown but you can’t give that much space defensively in that area.

Zack, a Leeds fan, said: "I would have taken a draw at the start of the game. However, we threw that away in the last 30 minutes. We invited pressure. I really hope we don't come to regret losing those two points. I fear the worst when we play Man U againon Sunday."
