How France battled to a hard-fought victory against Paraguay

Image
France v Paraguay further analysis This last-16 tie brought together two sides at opposite ends of the footballing spectrum. Author | Jack L France's attack, which has been at its fluent best throughout this tournament, came up against a Paraguay side intent on disrupting their rhythm through physicality, aggression and disciplined defending. Breaking them down proved far from straightforward for Didier Deschamps' side in a contest that became only the third World Cup knockout match since 1966 not to produce a shot on target in the first half. But once again it was Mbappe who provided the defining moment, this time sending Les Bleus into the quarter-finals while ending Paraguay's impressive run. The France captain kept his composure from the penalty spot after some superb footwork from Doue tempted the foul, in a match where France found themselves frustrated not only by Paraguay's resilience but also by a series of refereeing decisions that went against them. Germany want Jurgen Klopp as next manager

Image
All change for Germany following World Cup exit The German football association is seeking talks with Jurgen Klopp about becoming the men's national team coach after Julian Nagelsmann resigned. Author | Ed Nagelsmann requested to be relieved of his duties on Thursday following the team's early exit from the World Cup. The German FA (DFB) has now accepted that request and immediately terminated its contractual relationship with the 38-year-old former Bayern Munich manager. Germany's World Cup campaign came to an end on Monday when the four-time champions were beaten on penalties by Paraguay in the last 32. The defeat sparked widespread debate in the German media over the changes needed to restore the national side's ability to compete at the highest level once again. Initially Nagelsmann, who was appointed in 2023, was determined to remain in charge, saying after the game: "I'm not someone who runs away." Some immediate reaction to Germany's exit earlie...

England v Mexico to kick off as scheduled

Image
England's World Cup last-16 tie against Mexico will kick off as scheduled at 01:00 BST on Monday  This announcement comes after Fifa reversed plans to bring the match forward. Author | George B Football's world governing body held talks with the English and Mexican football associations on Friday after proposing the fixture be moved to 19:00 BST on Sunday (12:00 local time). Weather forecasts indicated there could be thunderstorms at that time, although Fifa did not provide an explanation for the proposed change. Sources told different media outlets that Fifa had been preparing to reschedule the match and confirm the decision in a statement, but the proposal prompted a strong reaction from officials representing both England and Mexico. The Football Association requested additional time to examine the weather forecast in greater detail. As discussions continued, concerns were raised over the impact on player preparation, supporter travel and the logistical challenges of rearran...

Harry Kane proves that he's one of the world's best

Image
Four games from immortality As Harry Kane raced towards the corner of Atlanta's futuristic stadium, England head coach Thomas Tuchel followed him on to the pitch in celebration. Author | Ben A Kane, the captain, leader and undisputed world-class striker, had rescued a World Cup campaign that had been drifting towards one of the darkest moments in England's history. Harry Kane leads the post match team talk after dramatic win over DR Congo. youtube.com/shorts/bu7BD... [image or embed] — SuperNews ( @supernews12.bsky.social ) 2 July 2026 at 10:05 Beneath the closed roof, away from Atlanta's searing heat and suffocating humidity, England and perhaps Tuchel's reign were fading fast as they trailed DR Congo until one of the country's greatest-ever players came to their rescue. There is no doubt England were heading for an embarrassment to rival the Euro 2016 last-16 defeat by Iceland and the shock World Cup loss to the United States in 1950 until Kane, as he has do...

Can anyone stop France?

Image
Four years after the penalty shootout heartbreak against Argentina in the final in Qatar... Les Bleus look intent on putting that disappointment behind them and going all the way this time. Author | Jack L They squandered a host of chances against Sweden, finishing with 25 attempts on goal, their highest tally in a World Cup match since 1998. Even so, France have scored 13 goals in four matches in the United States and their attacking numbers are on another level. Watch | Highlights of France v Sweden on BBC Football Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele has been involved in six goals, scoring four and providing two assists, while Michael Olise has five assists and struck the post with a spectacular acrobatic effort. One player will be key again But in Kylian Mbappe they have a player at the peak of his powers, producing the kind of ruthless finishing that underlines why he is regarded as one of the world's finest forwards. The Real Madrid forward is level in the race for the Gold...

Germany and their football nightmare

Image
A shock exit at the World Cup There was a time when Germany were expected to win major football tournaments. Author | Ed Including their years as West Germany, they have lifted the World Cup four times, finished runners-up on another four occasions and won three of the six European Championship finals they have contested. Those days, however, now feel a long way off. The front page of Tuesday's Bild newspaper captured the mood with the headline: "The next German football nightmare", after Germany's World Cup campaign came to a sudden end in the last 32 with a 4-3 penalty shootout defeat by Paraguay following a 1-1 draw after extra time. Watch | A former German footballer responds to their defeat and exit Since winning the World Cup in 2014, Germany have twice failed to progress beyond the group stage and have now been eliminated in the first knockout match they have played at the 2026 tournament. Paraguay began the competition 41st in the FIFA world rankings, compared...

What next for Scotland after Steve Clarke exit?

Image
Steve Clarke's abrupt Scotland exit leaves questions after World Cup disappointment For much of Saturday afternoon, the skies above Charlotte were cloaked in dark grey clouds as torrential rain, fierce winds, thunder and lightning battered the city. Author | Sean M Steve Clarke quits as Scotland manager. Reaction from BBC Scotland here. youtu.be/VwVttcjuxQc?... [image or embed] — Super News Affiliate ( @supernews1.bsky.social ) 28 June 2026 at 19:13 If Steve Clarke happened to glance out from his hotel room, it would have provided a fitting backdrop for what was to come. Within minutes of Scotland's World Cup exit being confirmed, news broke that the head coach was stepping down. Unlike the storm outside, there had been little indication it was on the way. The manner of his departure was entirely in keeping with Clarke's character There was no fanfare, no immediate interviews and no apparent desire to explain his thinking beyond the statement he released. The detail a...

Are England lacking an x factor?

Image
England's first two group matches have presented very different challenges. A thriller against Croatia and a battle against Ghana. Author | Liam C Croatia pressed high, while Ghana defended deep and were content to concede possession, as reflected in England's 78.2% share of the ball. Ghana's experienced coach Carlos Queiroz appeared to take particular satisfaction in pointing out, on several occasions, that England had "no solutions". Tuchel said: "It is difficult to find a way through when someone plays a 4-5-1, sits completely deep and is committed to it, and they celebrated a 0-0 like a win. "So you could see the different approaches, which is fair enough and credit to them. You cannot lose your head about it." A closer look at two very different matches Against Croatia, England's runners in wide areas and through the middle posed a genuine threat. With Ghana sitting back, however, the Three Lions needed a moment of individual brilliance and...

Scotland's hopes of progressing from Group C hang in the balance.

Image
Scotland's attacking questions and defensive resilience leave Group C hopes finely poised. They have three points from a 1-0 win over Haiti and a 1-0 defeat by Morocco. Author | Sean M That tally of points could yet prove enough if they avoid a heavy loss to Brazil on Wednesday, while a draw would leave them on the brink of reaching the last 32. But what have the two matches in Boston revealed before the Tartan Army descends on Miami? In the build-up to the tournament, head coach Steve Clarke switched to a 4-4-2 formation for friendlies against Curacao and Bolivia with encouraging results. Against modest opposition, Scotland scored eight goals across those two games and arrived at the World Cup in confident mood. Clarke persisted with the same shape for the opening match against Haiti, but Scotland managed fewer shots than their opponents and posted a lower expected goals figure (1.05 compared with 1.21). John McGinn's winner arrived via a deflection, while starting forwards La...

England bring joy and excitement to the World Cup

Image
It was a remarkable first match for England at the 2026 World Cup Can they keep this brave and attacking style up throughout the tournament? Author | Liam C England supporters spilled out of the magnificent Dallas Stadium into the warm night air buoyed by a sense of exhilaration after Thomas Tuchel's side delivered a powerful statement of intent. Harry Kane had earlier urged his England team-mates to be "free in the mind" and embrace the pressure that comes with a World Cup, and they took him at his word, for better and worse. England's opening 4-2 win over Croatia combined exhilarating attacking football with moments of alarming defensive vulnerability, but the smiles on the faces of supporters leaving this vast arena painted their own picture. This was, whisper it, fun. England have often been difficult to watch in recent years, even when reaching the Euro 2024 final and the World Cup quarter-finals in Qatar four years ago. Those campaigns brought progress, but rare...

France eventually click into gear against Senegal

Image
It was a hard-fought win for France against Senegal Senegal famously beat Les Bleus in the opening match of the 2002 World Cup, with the late Papa Bouba Diop scoring the only goal in one of the greatest upsets in the tournament's history. Author | Jack L For long periods, the Lions of Teranga looked capable of producing another memorable result against the two-time champions, whose star-studded attacking quartet of Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue and Michael Olise struggled to find their rhythm before the interval. France managed only three touches inside the Senegal penalty area in the first half, while Mbappe found it difficult to influence proceedings. Didier Deschamps' side emerged with far greater intensity after the break. Doue dragged a shot wide within moments of the restart, while Olise and Mbappe were both denied by Edouard Mendy when sent clean through on goal. However, the former Chelsea goalkeeper could do little to stop Mbappe, 27, from taking centre s...

Are European nations feeling the heat in North America

Image
How hot is too hot? When Belgium were held by Egypt on Monday, they became the seventh of the 10 European teams to fail to win their opening match of the World Cup. Author | Liam C Only Germany, Scotland and Sweden have begun their campaigns with victories, overcoming Curacao, Haiti and Tunisia respectively. England, Croatia, France, Norway, Austria and Portugal are still to play their opening fixtures. With European nations ranked higher than their opponents in eight of those 10 matches, more wins would have been expected. That has prompted questions over whether the hot conditions across North America are having an impact. The fans are having fun though. The heat was always likely to be a significant factor at this World Cup, with matches being staged in high temperatures across the tournament's three host nations. Belgium's draw with Egypt in Seattle took place on what had been forecast as one of the city's hottest days of the year, with temperatures rising above 30C...

The Tartan Army enjoys the sights and sounds of Fenway Park

Image
The last few days have been unlike anything Boston has experienced before.  A Scotland invasion has swept across the city for this World Cup, a pilgrimage many Scots never believed they would have the chance to make.  Author | Sean M There are families here with several generations who have never witnessed anything quite like it. The Tartan Army has been warmly welcomed wherever it has gone, embraced almost like a long-lost relative returning to a family gathering. Unsurprisingly, spirits were high after Scotland's World Cup victory over Haiti as supporters made their way to Fenway Park in the summer sunshine for a 'Scottish Celebration' night during the Red Sox's game against the Rangers. No, not that one. The Texas version. The evening is the brainchild of Travis Pollio, the Red Sox's director of ticket strategy and promotions. Standing on the corner of Jersey Street and Van Ness Street, he predicts around 4,000 Scots will attend, his voice barely carrying above t...

What should be England’s first-choice eleven?

Image
We asked an England fan what his first-choice eleven should be... Do you agree with George B's choices here Jordan Pickford is an easy choice in goal. I would start Reece James, provided he is fully fit. In the defence I would opt for John Stones ahead of Ezri Konsa, even though Konsa has been extremely reliable. I just think Stones has the ability to dictate play at international level and, if England need to retain possession in a game, he is someone who can do that. Marc Guehi's inclusion is fairly self-explanatory. He has been outstanding for Manchester City, Crystal Palace and England this season. At left-back, I would go with Nico O'Reilly. I know Djed Spence started there in the friendly against New Zealand, but if I had to choose one, it would definitely be O'Reilly. Who's in midfield? Elliot Anderson and Declan Rice would make up the midfield, which is probably what most people expect. I like Anderson because he can also initiate attacks. While he is there ...

Scotland fans are loving life in Boston

Image
No Scotland, no party... Scotland's first World Cup since 1998 is proving to be a memorable occasion for their fans and for the people of Boston. Author | Sean M Of all the places the Tartan Army could have chosen as a base for their World Cup adventure, they have ended up in a city famous for driving the English out. Supporters dressed as William Wallace have been mingling with tour guides portraying Paul Revere. Others have been sporting "Boston T Party" T-shirts, with the T standing for Tennent's. Nearby, close to the site of the Battle of Bunker Hill, the Scottish Football Association has transformed a local pub into Scotland House. From exiting the World Cup unbeaten in 1974, to the disappointment of the 1978 campaign, a lone point against Uruguay in 1986, defeat by Costa Rica in 1990 and a heavy loss to Morocco in 1998, Scotland's World Cup history is littered with examples of hopes raised and then dashed. The venue for this Group C match is the Fifa-ren...

Things get serious now for England and Thomas Tuchel

Image
One more warm-up match before the tournament starts England head coach Thomas Tuchel's pre-World Cup experimentation must surely come to an end now. Author | Liam C Tuchel's extended assessment of the options at his disposal continued on Saturday, with two entirely different teams taking to the field across each half of a low-key friendly against New Zealand in the sweltering heat of Tampa. The countdown is on to England's opening World Cup fixture against Croatia in Dallas on Wednesday 17 June. With the Tampa exercise complete, Tuchel should now be ready to offer a clearer indication of the side he believes can deliver success. It was entirely understandable that he wanted his squad to gain valuable minutes in demanding, energy-sapping conditions. It had been said in the build-up to this pre tournament friendly that utilising the full squad is going to be key.  The consequence of all this squad tinkering, however, was that the 1-0 victory, secured by another Harry Kane goa...

Alex Scott is in line to make his England debut

Image
A proud moment coming up for Alex Scott This is despite him missing out on a spot in England's World Cup squad Author | George B The Bournemouth midfielder is in line to make his England debut during the forthcoming World Cup warm-up fixtures in the United States. Scott, Rio Ngumoha, Josh King, Jason Steele and Ethan Nwaneri have travelled as additional members of the England squad for the preparation camp in Florida. They have joined up with the group while awaiting the arrival of Arsenal quartet Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze and Noni Madueke, along with Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson, following their involvement in European finals. Henderson is expected to arrive within the next 24 hours, while the remaining four players are due to report over the weekend. Why are these players involved if not in the main squad? It is understood that all five supplementary squad members, despite not being included in Thomas Tuchel's final World Cup squad, are eligible to fe...

Italy fail to qualify for another World Cup

Image
Bosnia-Herzegovina 1 -1 Italy (Bosnia-Herzegovina won 4-1 on penalties) Four-time world champions Italy have failed to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup after a crushing penalty shootout defeat by Bosnia-Herzegovina. Author | Josh T Stadium | Stadion Bilino Polje No previous winner of the competition has missed three straight tournaments, with Italy also absent from Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022. Pio Esposito, who blazed over, and Bryan Cristante, whose effort struck the underside of the crossbar, missed from the spot after Gennaro Gattuso’s 10-man side had clung on under sustained Bosnian pressure to force penalties. Bosnia-Herzegovina, led by 40-year-old captain Edin Dzeko, have now reached just the second World Cup in their history and will face Canada, Qatar and Switzerland in Group B this summer. It had started so well for Italy Before the match, a lot of Italian fans and pundits had spoken about their nerves. This was clearly a huge game and a huge moment for the present and...

Turkey reach first World Cup since 2002

Image
Kosovo 0 - 1 Turkey Turkey reached their first World Cup in 24 years as Kerem Akturkoglu’s goal secured a narrow play-off victory over Kosovo. Author | Jack L Stadium | Stadiumi Fadil Vokrri They had not qualified since finishing third at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, but will now take their place in Group C this summer alongside Australia, Paraguay and co-hosts the United States. In a tense encounter in Pristina, Kenan Yildiz cut the ball back for Orkun Kokcu, whose mis-hit effort was turned in at the back post by the Fenerbahce forward Akturkoglu in the 53rd minute. Kosovo, seeking a first major tournament since joining FIFA and UEFA in 2016, went close before the break when Ugurcan Cakir tipped Fisnik Asllani’s strike onto the crossbar. Turkey, who managed only one other shot on target, held on to secure their third World Cup appearance and end a run of five successive failed qualification campaigns. pic.twitter.com/Y2oIAMVcaE — TĂĽrkiye #BizimÇocuklar 🇹🇷 (@MilliTakimlar) March 3...

Scotland's World Cup preparation starts with a defeat

Image
Scotland 0 - 1 Japan Scotland opened their World Cup preparations with a narrow friendly defeat by Japan. Author | Sean M Stadium | Hampden Park Playing for the first time since November’s memorable win over Denmark, which sealed a return to the World Cup after 28 years, Scotland national football team were unable to reproduce that level in the first of their March fixtures. Both sides struck the woodwork in an even first half and continued to create chances after the interval. It was Japan, however, who made the breakthrough when Ito scored in the 84th minute. The forward, who plays for KRC Genk, drove into the Scotland penalty area following neat interplay down the left, before guiding a low finish into the corner beyond Angus Gunn. Watch | Post match reaction from McClean.
