Championship: Referee dominates Lancashire derby

Image
Preston North End 0 - 0 Blackburn Rovers This fixture between Preston and Blackburn ended goalless for the first time in 43 years. Both teams struggled to create clear opportunities until the match suddenly came alive just before half-time. Preston goalkeeper Freddie Woodman parried Ryan Hedges’ shot into the path of Tyrhys Dolan, whose half-volley rattled the post. Shortly after, Preston's Sam Greenwood was sent off for a poor challenge on Lewis Baker, yet his side finished the first half on the front foot. Brad Potts forced a near-post save from Rovers keeper Aynsley Pears, who then pulled off a brilliant stop to deny Andy Hughes' header from the resulting corner. At the break, Blackburn manager John Eustace made an attacking switch, bringing on forward Makhtar Gueye for midfielder Baker to exploit their numerical advantage. 6,000 Blackburn fans at Preston Gueye had a tame effort comfortably gathered by Pears, who looked assured as Blackburn's defence held firm.

FA Cup: Blackburn shock Leicester

Image
Leicester City 1 - 2 Blackburn Rovers Championship promotion contenders Blackburn Rovers caused an FA Cup fifth-round upset by stunning 2021 cup winners Leicester City. Backburn's dynamic display, in which they should have scored more goals, gave them a place in the last eight for the first time in eight years. Having been denied by Daniel Iversen's flying save, Tyrhys Dolan curled past Leicester's Danish goalkeeper for the opener. Ryan Hedges then missed a gilt-edged opportunity to double the visiting side's lead at the start of the second period when he failed to hit the target from 10 yards out. This didn't prove costly as Sammie Szmodics wriggled clear to convert Rovers' second in the 52nd minute, while the midfielder also had a goal ruled out for offside. Substitute Kelechi Iheanacho pulled one back for the Foxes by slotting in from close range. However, it wasn't enough. Many fans would have thought there was a good opportunity of a cup run there.

They managed this at the last minute. What a moment. This is the only one before the Premier League but we're sure there are many other dramatic title races from the Division One era. Blackburn Rovers and Man United in 1995 A crazy season. This race also went to the last second of the season. Amazingly, both Blackburn and United failed to win on the final day with Blackburn eventually taking the title by a point. It had been
