Italy fail to qualify for another World Cup

Image
Bosnia-Herzegovina 1 -1 Italy (Bosnia-Herzegovina won 4-1 on penalties) Four-time world champions Italy have failed to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup after a crushing penalty shootout defeat by Bosnia-Herzegovina. Author | Josh T Stadium | Stadion Bilino Polje No previous winner of the competition has missed three straight tournaments, with Italy also absent from Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022. Pio Esposito, who blazed over, and Bryan Cristante, whose effort struck the underside of the crossbar, missed from the spot after Gennaro Gattuso’s 10-man side had clung on under sustained Bosnian pressure to force penalties. Bosnia-Herzegovina, led by 40-year-old captain Edin Dzeko, have now reached just the second World Cup in their history and will face Canada, Qatar and Switzerland in Group B this summer. It had started so well for Italy Before the match, a lot of Italian fans and pundits had spoken about their nerves. This was clearly a huge game and a huge moment for the present and...

Northern Ireland to miss out on the World Cup

Image
Italy 2 - 0 Northern Ireland Italy moved a step closer to a first World Cup appearance since 2014 with a composed victory that ended Northern Ireland’s play-off hopes Author | Mark Lee Stadium | New Balance Arena Sandro Tonali, the Newcastle United midfielder, broke the visitors’ resistance and eased the tension inside the New Balance Arena with a powerful strike from the edge of the area in the 56th minute. As Northern Ireland pushed forward in search of an equaliser, Moise Kean made the result safe, guiding a finish in off the post with 10 minutes remaining. It had been a positive start for Northern Ireland Until then, Michael O'Neill’s side, featuring their second youngest average age since the Second World War at 22.5, had frustrated Italy and carried a threat going forward. Their lack of cutting edge in the final third, however, proved costly. In pursuit of a first World Cup in 40 years and only a fourth in their history, Northern Ireland were unable to test Gianluigi Donnarum...

There was to be some late drama Dortmund appeared to have forced extra time when Karim Adeyemi curled in a crucial goal to restore parity overall, but the drama was not done. Deep into stoppage time, Ramy Bensebaini caught Nikola Krstovic with a high boot in the penalty area as the Atalanta forward attacked a cross following an error by goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. After a VAR review, referee Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez awarded a penalty and showed Bensebaini a second yellow card. Lazar Samardz...

Inter Milan 1 - 2 Bodo/Glimt (Bodo/Glimt won 5-2 on aggregate) Another extraordinary night for a club that keeps on defying the odds  Author | Ed  Stadium | San Siro Inter entered the knockout round play-off as three-time winners of the competition and with a commanding 10-point lead at the top of Serie A, status that made them overwhelming favourites for the tie. But Bodø/Glimt, still in their winter off season, have built a reputation for confounding expectations during their debut campaign in the UEFA Champions League and delivered another landmark result. Having already beaten Manchester City and AtlĂ©tico Madrid in the group stage, they added Inter Milan to the list with a 3-1 victory in the first leg. They faced a barrage of attacks from the home side in the second leg Inter peppered the Bodø/Glimt goal in the first half but the visitors remained resolute, repelling most of the pressure with Nikita Haikin alert to anything that did reach the target. Galatasaray will take a three goal lead to Turin

Image
Galatasaray 5 - 2 Juventus  Galatasaray will head to Turin with a commanding lead after a breathless comeback victory over Juventus in the first leg of their Champions League knockout phase play-off. Author | Ed Stadium | RAMS Park The Istanbul side trailed 2-1 at the interval but responded with authority after the break, turning the tie on its head to move 3-2 ahead by the hour through strikes from Noa Lang and Davinson Sánchez. Juventus had earlier mounted an impressive revival of their own, Teun Koopmeiners scoring twice in a 17-minute first-half spell after Gabriel Sara had given the hosts an early lead. Any hopes of restoring control evaporated in the second half.  Juan Cabal, introduced at the interval, was dismissed just 21 minutes later for a second booking, leaving the visitors short-handed and increasingly vulnerable. Galatasaray sensed the opportunity and pressed relentlessly. Lang capitalised on slack defending to claim his second of the night before Sacha Boey str...

[image or embed] — European Super Football ( @eurosuperfootball.bsky.social ) 10 December 2025 at 08:08 Much of the pre-match discussion centred on Mohamed Salah’s omission from the squad after he claimed the club had “thrown him under the bus” and suggested his relationship with Arne Slot had collapsed. With the forward remaining on Merseyside, it fell to Szoboszlai to take on the responsibility from the spot after a VAR review showed Alessandro Bastoni pulling the shirt of Florian Wirtz in the area. Inter keeper Yann Sommer guessed correctly, but the force of Szoboszlai’s strike took it beyond him. Liverpool held firm to claim three valuable points after a turbulent spell at the club. Slot’s side had lost nine of their previous 12 ma...

Roma ease to win over Rangers at Ibrox

Image
Rangers 0 - 2 Roma Rangers endured another punishing Europa League night as Roma inflicted a fourth straight defeat in this season’s competition. Author | Mark Lee Stadium | Ibrox Danny Rohl’s team were booed off at half-time, two goals down and fortunate the margin was not greater. Only Jack Butland’s sharp goalkeeping and some wasteful Roma finishing spared further damage. Lorenzo Pellegrini’s exquisite strike ten minutes before the interval effectively settled the contest, the captain guiding home after a flowing Roma move. Earlier, his teasing corner had been glanced on by Matias Soule, the Argentine forward heading into an empty net to give the visitors the lead. At 2-0, memories resurfaced of the heavy Champions League qualifying defeat by Brugge in August. Rangers rarely troubled Mile Svilar, though Djeidi Gassama’s lively runs at least forced some defensive scrambling from the Italians. Author | Jack L Stadium | Allianz Stadium Dusan Vlahovic levelled midway through the first half, cancelling out Maxi Araujo’s early strike, but Luciano Spalletti’s side were unable to build on their new manager’s bright start. Sporting, buoyed by two wins from their opening three group fixtures, struck first in the 12th minute when Araujo drilled a low shot in off the post. The visitors almost doubled their lead moments later, only for Trincao’s deflected effort to come back off the crossbar. Juventus eventually found some rhythm  Vlahovic forced a superb save from Rui Silva before finally finding the net with a precise finish from Khephren Thuram’s cross. It was the Serbian forward’s first goal from open play in 10 matches, a timely reminder of his quality as uncertainty over his future continues to linger. A third Champions ...

This news came just three games into the new season. Almost within a matter of hours, he was replaced by former Celtic and Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou.   This doesn't go well. After less than 40 days in charge, Postecoglou was dismissed by the club after their 3-0 home defeat to Chelsea at the City Ground. This set a new record for the shortest reign of any permanent Premier League manager, surpassing Les Reed’s ill-fated spell at Charlton Athletic. First win of the season for Aston Villa

Image
Aston Villa 1 - 0 Bologna  Captain John McGinn struck the decisive blow as a nervous Aston Villa scraped their first win of the season with a narrow victory over Bologna. Author | Jay Dean Stadium | Villa Park Players and fans celebrate Unai Emery’s side opened their Europa League campaign with three points but offered little to suggest their stuttering start is behind them. Villa looked tentative throughout and Ollie Watkins squandered the chance to ease the tension when his second-half penalty was saved. The win at least halted a frustrating run after a turbulent week off the pitch, with the president of football operations Monchi, departing and Roberto Olabe arriving from Real Sociedad as his replacement. McGinn’s early strike from the edge of the box, his second goal against Bologna after scoring against them in last season’s Champions League, proved enough. Before that Evann Guessand had already tested Lukasz Skorupski, who also denied the lively Donyell Malen as Villa pressed...

A closer look at what happened City dominated possession as anticipated but Pep Guardiola will have been frustrated that his side were not ahead at the interval, despite a barrage of efforts that met an inspired Vanja Milinkovic-Savic in the Napoli goal. The Serbian produced a series of outstanding saves, denying Tijjani Reijnders with a sharp stop, blocking Phil Foden’s low effort and turning away a fierce volley from Rodri. He also clawed out headers from Nico O’...

The 28-year-old now has five goals in four games across all competitions, providing last season’s beaten finalists with the perfect response as they look to move on from their heavy defeat by Paris St-Germain in May’s final. A closer analysis of what happened Cristian Chivu, who succeeded Simone Inzaghi after that loss, kept faith with much of the side that started in Munich, naming eight of the same players. He was rewarded with a fluent and assured performance, Thuram at the heart of it. With Lautaro MartĂnez left on the bench due to a back issue, the former Borussia Monchengladbach forward carried the main attacking threat throughout. Thuram had gone close before his opener, flashing on...

The pressure eventually told when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia doubled the lead before half-time, the Georgian skipping past defenders and rifling home from 18 yards. Enrique, who had taken a vantage point high in the stands for the opening half, saw his side handed the chance to extend their advantage from the spot after Yu...
