Premier League: Newcastle fight back to beat Wolves

Image
Wolves 1 - 2 Newcastle United Harvey Barnes' sensational late strike maintained Newcastle's unbeaten start to the season as they came from behind to win at Wolves. Coming off the bench, Barnes curled a beauty from 20 yards out with just 10 minutes remaining, shortly after Fabian Schar had levelled the game. Wolves had taken the lead through Mario Lemina’s first goal since February, but Gary O'Neil's side are still searching for their first win after four games. Click here for more Newcastle United news and stories A closer look at what happened Newcastle looked lively in the early stages of the game, with Wolves keeper Sam Johnstone tipping over Jacob Murphy's effort after the winger burst forward. This sparked a heated exchange between O'Neil and his defender, Craig Dawson. The Magpies kept the pressure on, and Anthony Gordon nearly doubled their advantage, hitting the post after a slick dribble past Nelson Semedo and nutmegging Yerson Mosquera. Pictures

Premier League: Villa and Newcastle both win opening day fixtures

Aston Villa and Newcastle both won their opening-day fixtures. Let's explore what happened West Ham United 1 - 2 Aston Villa Substitute Jhon Duran clinched a late victory for Aston Villa as they kicked off their Premier League season with a win at West Ham. Duran seized onto Jacob Ramsey's pass and coolly tucked the ball into the bottom corner with just 11 minutes left, shortly after rumours circulated that the Hammers had made two unsuccessful bids for the striker. Amadou Onana marked his Villa debut in style, heading home Youri Tielemans' corner after just four minutes when the Belgian midfielder was left unmarked in the box. West Ham levelled the score before half-time when Matty Cash was deemed to have fouled Tomas Soucek during a tussle in the box. Lucas Paqueta converted the penalty, sending Emiliano Martinez the wrong way with a stuttered run-up as he slotted the ball into the bottom left corner. However, Duran ultimately had the final word, ensuring Villa's

Premier League: Potentially a pivotal night in Newcastle

Newcastle United 1 - 1 Everton How important could this point prove to be for Everton? How costly could these two dropped points be in Newcastle's quest for European qualification?  Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored a late penalty to secure a crucial point for Everton in their battle to avoid relegation and draw against Newcastle, who are still vying for a spot in Europe. Alexander Isak scored in the 15th minute for the hosts after receiving a pass from Harvey Barnes, cutting inside Jarrad Branthwaite, and calmly finishing past Jordan Pickford. Dan Burn thought he had scored a goal, but it was disallowed for offside. Isak also had a shot cleared off the line.  Later in the game, Paul Dummett was penalised for wrestling Ashley Young to the ground by having his arm around Young's neck. This gave the visitors a chance to score a late goal. Can Newcastle United qualify for Europe? More news from the Geordie Nation on European Super Football. Referee Tony Harrington had not given a

EFL Cup: Chelsea progress on penalties to beat Newcastle

Image
Chelsea 1 - 1 Newcastle United (Chelsea win 4-2 on penalties) Kieran Trippier had a nightmarish experience at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea secured a spot in the Carabao Cup semi-finals through a penalty shootout. Despite Callum Wilson's 16th-minute goal appearing to propel Newcastle into the last four, substitute Mykhailo Mudryk seized on the veteran defender's mistake deep into stoppage time, leading to the match heading to penalties. Trippier, who has recently struggled with a dip in form, widened Newcastle's second penalty, and with keeper Djordje Petrovic saving Matt Ritchie's spot-kick, Chelsea transitioned from the brink of defeat to the joy of reaching the semi-finals. It was a harsh outcome for Trippier, a key figure under manager Eddie Howe, whose moment of indecision on a header provided Chelsea with the lifeline Mudryk capitalized on. Chelsea's Cole Palmer, Conor Gallagher, Christopher Nkunku, and Mudryk all scored in the shootout, while only Callum Wils

UCL: Newcastle earn a point at the San Siro

Image
AC Milan 0 - 0 Newcastle United With a 0-0 draw at the San Siro, Newcastle earned what could prove to be a vital point after holding a dominant AC Milan to their first Champions League match in over twenty years. Eddie Howe's side qualified for the group stages for the first time since the 2002/03 season, joining Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund, as well as Milan, last year's semifinalists. In such a daunting draw, any points gained away from St James' Park should be cherished - even if theis was mainly earned through gritty defending and opposition wastefulness. Newcastle were fortunate to go into half-time level with the hosts after Rafael Leao fluffed a backheel after a fine solo run. In the second half, the game became much more even. The visitors' Sandro Tonali had a shot blocked, while Tijjani Reijnders forced Pope into a decent save. More AC Milan news In the closing stages, Leao should have won it with a header after getting between Newcastle def

PL: Newcastle regret missed chances against Manchester United

Image
Newcastle United 1 - 1 Manchester United Edinson Cavani came off the bench to score an equaliser for Manchester United and ruin Newcastle's hopes of a priceless second league win of the season. The striker was introduced after a  poor first half from the visitors, during which they conspired to partly gift Allan Saint-Maximin the opening goal. Cavani immediately added a threat to the blunt attack. He side-footed one effort wide before finding the net at the third time of asking with a poked shot from inside the box. It was cruel on Newcastle. They defended with determination and counter-attacked with intensity to produce their finest display of the season at a loud and passionate St James' Park. However, the Geordie faithful would have to ask a rather key question. Why can't they put in that level of performance every week? For Manchester United, it was another poor performance in a season of poor performances. Where do they go from here? Let's have a look at some o

Premier League: Crystal Palace 1 - 1 Newcastle United

Image
Life after Steve Bruce began on a positive note for Newcastle United as Callum Wilson’s  overhead kick rescued a point against Crystal Palace. The Magpies were second best for the majority of the game at Selhurst Park but earned a share of the spoils when Wilson sent an acrobatic volley past Vicente Guaita after Palace had failed to clear a corner. Benteke had previously opened the scoring 11 minutes into the second half. He powered a header into the bottom corner from Tyrick Mitchell's deep cross. This was Crystal Palace's sixth draw of the season and leaves them in 15th place, five points above Newcastle, who remain second bottom on four points and without a win this season. The Interim Newcastle boss Graeme Jones later hailed goalscorer Callum Wilson as a unique striker and said :"He is the best matchday finisher I have worked with. That is not even half a chance and it's in the back of the net, which tells you everything about him. "In training he is a good
