The four Premier League teams in UEFA Champions League recently discovered their eight league phase opponents as the draw was made in Monaco for the 36 participating clubs. Manchester City and Arsenal will each face Inter Milan and PSG. The 2024 Premier League champions will face Inter at home in a repeat of the 2022/23 final, while Arsenal will travel to Italy and vice versa for their matches with PSG. Last season's Premier League top two also face an additional two Italian opponents, with City also facing Juventus as Arsenal travel to Atalanta. Liverpool will face a tough draw, facing the champions of Spain and Germany, Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen, at home, while also travelling to RB Leipzig and AC Milan.   Aston Villa will face Bayern Munich, whom they beat in 1981 to win the European Cup and fans will be dreaming of glory nights once again. How does the new Champions League form

Championship: Luton still without a league win

Image
Luton Town 1 - 2 QPR Michael Frey played a pivotal role in QPR's comeback against Luton Town, creating one goal and scoring the decisive winner in a brilliant display of hardworking centre-forward play.  Frey smashed home a perfectly judged volley to secure Rangers' first Championship victory of the season, just minutes after his power and awareness set up Nicolas Madsen to equalise. The equaliser came somewhat against the run of play, much like Luton's opener in the first half, which was handed to them when the unlucky Jimmy Dunne accidentally turned the ball into his own net from close range. EFL: 2024/2025 (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) More news and stories from Luton Luton, still without a win and with just one point and two goals from their four league matches, rarely looked like equalising until the final moments of the game. A frantic finish saw Carlton Morris denied by a fine save from keeper Paul Nardi, and Joe Taylor heading over from close range. Despite t

EFL Cup: Everton nerves eased

Image
Everton 3 - 0 Doncaster Rovers Everton gave their fans a much-needed lift after a disappointing start to the season, as Iliman Ndiaye marked his full debut with a superb solo goal in a convincing 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Doncaster. Following a 3-0 loss at home to Brighton in their Premier League opener and a dismal 4-0 defeat at Tottenham, the Toffees couldn’t afford another slip-up against their League Two opponents. Here’s how the action unfolded at Goodison Park Grant McCann’s Doncaster side looked like they might pull off an upset, but Everton took the lead early in the second half with Tim Iroegbunam’s first-time strike, which Dwight McNeil claimed to have got a touch on. Everton’s long-awaited first goal of the season was quickly followed by Ndiaye’s moment of magic, as he turned, ran, and finished brilliantly, before Beto sealed a morale-boosting win ahead of their upcoming fixture against Bournemouth. Doncaster, making their first trip to Goodison Park since 1985, started

EFL Cup: Stoke thrash Middlesbrough

Image
Middlesbrough 0 - 5 Stoke City Stoke City shocked Championship rivals Middlesbrough with a stunning 5-0 victory, securing their place in the Carabao Cup third round. The Potters' 18-year-old striker, Emre Tezgel, took advantage of sloppy defending by the hosts to calmly slot in an early opener. Middlesbrough fell apart in the second half, conceding four goals in a chaotic 12-minute spell, marking the sixth time they've been beaten by a five-goal margin at home. Ryan Mmaee scored from close range before Lewis Koumas arrived unmarked at the far post, and substitute Million Manhoef added two goals in just seven minutes after coming on. Middlesbrough, who made nine changes from their weekend draw against Portsmouth, had a chance to take the lead early on. Josh Coburn found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper but dragged his shot narrowly wide. Stoke broke the deadlock when Koumas and Andrew Moran combined to set up Tezgel, who had plenty of time and space to control the ball

Cambridge responded on 28 minutes, with Shayne Lavery equalising against his former club after connecting with a cross from James Brophy. Husband, who had only scored twice in 180 appearances for Blackpool, unexpectedly doubled his tally by nodding in another Evans corner 10 minutes later. Seconds after the restart, Kyle Joseph capitalised on some hesitant defending from Cambridge, sprinting through to lift the ball over Vicente Reyes, making it 3-1 to Blackpool. The Gunners have made a new signing Arsenal have successfully secured the signing of Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad in a deal potentially worth up to £31.6 million. The 28-year-old is set to join the north London club on a four-year contract, with an option to extend for an additional year. Arsenal will pay an initial fee of £27.4 million, with a further £4.2 million in potential add-ons. Merino was a key player in Spain's Euro 2024 triumph, playing in all seven matches and netting a decisive extra-time goal against Germany in the quarter-finals. He is Arsenal's third acquisition of the transfer window, following the signings of Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori and Spanish goalkeeper David Raya, who joined permanently from Brentford after a loan spell. Merino, known for his ability to play as a deep-lying midfielder, is expected to complement Declan Rice, who took on a box-to-box role at times last season. Icons: A throwback to Sven's greatest night as England manager

Image
Everyone at European Super Football was saddened by the announcement that Sven-Goran Eriksson has died at the age of 76. Eriksson led England to the quarter-finals at three major tournaments during his five-year spell in charge between 2001 and 2006. This article will explore his greatest night as England manager. A World Cup qualifier from 2001 when England thrashed Germany 5-1.  A closer look at what happened Before this night, Germany had only ever lost one World Cup qualifier at home in their history. However, on this night in Munich, they were torn apart by an England team playing slick football with a clinical edge up front. Such a wonderful occasion from an English perspective looked fanciful when Carsten Jancker fired the Germans in front within six minutes. England's young Lions roared back amazingly to thrash the home side. German goalkeeper Oliver Kahn was the best keeper in the world at the time. However, he looked more flappable than anyone else on a night riddled wi

Championship: South Wales derby ends in a draw

Image
Swansea City 1 - 1 Cardiff City Callum Robinson came off the bench to rescue a point for Cardiff City with a late equaliser against arch-rivals Swansea City, securing their first point of the season in the South Wales derby. Liam Cullen had ignited the already charged atmosphere by putting the Swans ahead after just 10 minutes, capitalising on a rebound after Ronald’s volley was parried by Ethan Horvath. Cardiff seemed destined for a sixth derby defeat in seven matches after a lacklustre first-half performance, but manager Erol Bulut's substitutions sparked a significant improvement, leading to Robinson’s well-crafted equaliser. The 79th-minute goal shifted the mood inside the Swansea.com Stadium. Although the Bluebirds couldn’t find a winner, this draw will have felt like a small victory after their tough start to the season, having lost their first two games with a combined score of 7-0. This was the first draw between the two teams since 2020 and a relatively subdued affai

The Big Discussion: Can Ipswich Town survive?

Image
Despite a second defeat of the season, there is still plenty of optimism among Ipswich Town fans.  Ipswich took an early lead at the home of the reigning champions, with Sam Szmodics finding the net.  However, their advantage was quickly erased, and the match ultimately ended in a 4-1 victory for Pep Guardiola’s side. Reflecting on last week’s match against Liverpool, where the Reds scored twice in five minutes, the Ipswich manager emphasised the importance of learning to respond better when conceding a goal. He highlighted the need for similar lessons after today’s game, where City managed to score three goals in quick succession. Premier League: 2024/2025 season (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) They have strengthened their squad After the match, Ipswich announced the signing of Jack Clarke from Sunderland, marking their 10th acquisition in the summer transfer window. Scotland, Celtic and Rangers prepare for Glasgow Derby with comfortable victories

Image
St Mirren 0 - 3 Celtic Celtic secured a convincing 3-0 victory over St Mirren in the Scottish Premiership, maintaining their perfect start to the season with three wins from three games.  The champions were in control from the outset, with Callum McGregor scoring within the first three minutes. Reo Hatate added a second goal before halftime, and Alistair Johnston completed the scoring in the second half, following a strong performance from Nicolas Kuhn. Despite the ongoing transfer saga involving Matt O'Riley, who is close to joining Brighton, Celtic's midfield performed exceptionally well. Paulo Bernardo stepped in for O'Riley, but it was the established players, McGregor and Hatate, who led the charge. Hatate was particularly impressive, creating five chances and showcasing his ability to fill the void left by O'Riley. St Mirren struggled to break through Celtic's relentless pressing and managed only one shot in the first half. Although they showed some impr

The Big Discussion: Can Brighton go to the next level?

Image
Another great day for Brighton fans. Are they about to go the next level this season? Euphoria was certainly the word to describe the noise that greeted the final whistle, even though beating United has become almost routine for Brighton, with five victories in their last six meetings. Perhaps the excitement was due to starting the season with back-to-back wins, although Brighton achieved that last year as well. More likely, it’s because they’ve once again found a manager who can keep the club moving forward, reaching heights their fans could never have imagined two decades ago. There was an element of luck in Brighton's win, particularly when Joshua Zirkzee, on a wet pitch, couldn’t stop himself from sliding towards goal after failing to convert Bruno Fernandes' 72nd-minute cross. Unluckily, he didn’t cross the line before Alejandro Garnacho’s shot struck him, resulting in the goal being ruled out for offside. However, the seamless transition from Roberto de Zerbi to Hurze

The Big Discussion: How can Manchester United improve?

Image
Another defeat for Manchester United where they had plenty of opportunities to win but couldn't get over the line. Their players must improve their game management in the season ahead. The Red Devils were beaten 2-1 at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday in our first away match of the Premier League campaign after Seagulls striker Joao Pedro headed a 95th-minute winner. It was the sixth time since the 2022/23 season that Ten Hag's side have lost a league game from a goal scored in second-half stoppage time. They will be hoping to bounce back from the disappointment on the south coast when Arne Slot’s Liverpool visit Old Trafford on Sunday 1 September, What are they currently doing well at and how can they build on it? One of the most noticeable improvements in this team during the first two weeks of the Premier League season is their pressing game, both in its organisation and the intensity with which they apply it. Having Fernandes play as a false nine has been a key fa

Premier League: Forest pick up first win of the season

Image
Southampton 0 - 1 Nottingham Forest Morgan Gibbs-White netted the decisive goal, securing Nottingham Forest's first win of the new Premier League season at Southampton. His initial header was cleared off the line by Yukinari Sugawara, but the Forest captain quickly reacted to slot home the rebound in the 70th minute. Forest had a chance to go ahead earlier in the match, but debutant Nikola Milenkovic narrowly missed from four yards out, misjudging his shot. Cameron Archer nearly equalised on his home debut for the Saints, but he couldn’t quite connect with Charlie Taylor’s cross, which flashed across the face of the goal. As in their opening defeat to Newcastle, Southampton dominated possession but struggled to create significant chances. Left wing-back Kyle Walker-Peters was a constant threat in the second half, forcing Forest keeper Matz Sels into a save after cutting inside and shooting with his right foot. Premier League: Concerning signs for Everton

Image
Tottenham Hotspur 4 - 0 Everton Everton's difficult start to the new season worsened with a 4-0 loss at Tottenham, marked by a costly mistake from goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Following a 3-0 defeat at home to Brighton on the opening weekend, Sean Dyche's side have now conceded seven goals in their first two games, leaving them rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table without a goal to their name. Tottenham's first goal was unstoppable, with Yves Bissouma unleashing a powerful strike from just outside the box, which crashed in off the underside of the bar in the 14th minute, putting his recent controversy behind him. The match then took a turn for the worse for Everton when Pickford hesitated on a backpass from James Tarkowski, allowing Heung-Min Son to nip in and score into an empty net in the 25th minute. Pickford's mishap encapsulated a dismal first half for the visitors, who managed just one shot on target, a 58th-minute effort from debutant Jesper Lindst
