Italy: AC Milan close the gap on Serie A leaders Inter Milan

AC Milan 3 - 1  Roma AC Milan moved closer to Serie A leaders Inter Milan to a point after a home win over Roma. The hosts took an early lead when Olivier Giroud converted a penalty following a handball by his former Chelsea team-mate Tammy Abraham. They made it 2-0 when Junior Messias' followed up after Giroud hit the post. The England striker Abraham pulled one back, steering in Lorenzo Pellegrini's shot, but substitute Rafael Leao broke clear to score Milan's third goal and seal the win. PL news: Aston Villa sign Philippe Coutinho on loan

Aston Villa have announced that they have agreed to sign Philippe Coutinho on loan.  The deal is subject to a medical and a work permit being granted and includes an option to buy the former Liverpool player. Coutinho joined Barcelona in a £142m move from Liverpool in January 2018. His impact at the club hasn't been great, scoring only 26 goals in 106 appearances. Villa boss Steven Gerrard described his former team-mate as a special footballer recently. The pair were key parts of a Liverpool side who fell just short of winning the Premier League back in 2014. Newcastle United sign Kieran Trippier

Newcastle United have announced the signing of defender Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid. He is their first signing of what is expected to be a busy transfer window and the first player brought in by Eddie Howe. Trippier was part of the Spurs side that reached the Champions League final in 2019. He then moved Atletico Madrid, where he won La Liga. Internationally, the defender made his debut for England in 2017 and was part of the squad that reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020. Trippier tweeted: "I’m so happy to be joining Newcastle. Everyone knows the fans are unbelievably passionate, and I will give my absolute all for them. I can’t wait to get to work." Mason Greenwood (born October 2001) currently plays for Manchester United. Quick summary Greenwood is a player with great potential. He made his first start for Manchester United in a Europa League match against Astana in September 2019. On the night, he scored and became the club's youngest ever goalscorer in a European competition aged only 17. Stats In his first 135 games for Manchester United, Greenwood managed to score a fairly credible 34 goals. His best season came in 2019/2020 when he scored 17 goals in 49 matches. He played a key part in the club securing a place in the following season's Champions League.  International career His senior international came for England in a UEFA Nations League game against Iceland in September 2020. PL news: Richard Arnold will replace Ed Woodward at Manchester United

Manchester United have announced that Richard Arnold will replace Ed Woodward as their most senior executive on February 1st. Woodward stated his intention to leave his role as executive vice-chairman last season. That was in the middle of the fallout from the now doomed European Super League idea. Arnold originally joined United in August 2007 and has been managing director at the Old Trafford club since 2013. It has also been reported that Woodward will remain on the board until the end of the season, which will involve attending a couple of meetings. Previous stories had indicated that he would take a consultancy role with the club. This is no longer the case.  More reaction A group of United fans gave their thoughts on the announcement via the  All For United  YouTube account. PL transfer news: Everton sign Nathan Patterson

Everton have announced the signing of Scotland right-back Nathan Patterson from Rangers on a five-and-a-half-year deal. The 20-year-old moves to the blue half of Merseyside for a fee rumoured to be around £11.5m plus add-ons, a record fee received by the Scottish champions.  Petterson told Everton TV: "Obviously we aren't in the place where we want to be right now but we can definitely get there with the talent in the changing room and staff here, and I have full belief we can do that."  Footage below from the Everton YouTube channel. Premier League club Southampton have been taken over by a company backed by Serbian media mogul Dragan Solak. They have confirmed Sport Republic has bought Chinese businessman Gao Jisheng's 80% stake. Gao took over Southampton in August 2017, with Katharina Liebherr retaining 20%.of ownership. With this new deal, Liebherr will continue to own her minority stake Saints are 14th in the Premier League, after being promoted to the top flight of English football in 2012. Before this time, they had spent time in third tier of English football thanks to clear mismanagement on and off the pitch. They have remained steady in the Premier League and are potentially in a decent position to make the next step. It's time to have another look at an icon from the history of football. This time it's Michael Ballack. A former German midfielder who played at the highest level of the game.  A summary Ballack is among the top goal scorers in the history of the German national team. During his career, he won the German Footballer of the Year award three times. The midfielder was known for his passing range, powerful shot, physical strength and commanding presence in midfield. The one negative from his career was that he never won the Champions League. He did pick up two runner-up medals in 2002 with Leverkusen and 2008 with Chelsea.  The start of his career Ballack's career started to take off when he was transferred to 1. FC Kaiserslautern in 1997. He won the Bundesliga in his first season at the club, his first major honour. PL: Wolves were deserved winners at Old Trafford

Manchester United 0 - 1 Wolverhampton Wanderers Joao Moutinho scored the only goal Wolves picked up a deserved victory at Old Trafford. They ended Ralf Rangnick's unbeaten start as interim Manchester United manager in the process. The visitors controlled most of the game and were well on top by the time Moutinho struck.As you can imagine, the Wolves fans celebrated with a huge roar at the final whistle.  From the United perspective, it was a crushing blow for Rangnick. His side remain seventh in the Premier League and are a staggering 22 points behind leaders Manchester City. Reaction The result and Manchester United's poor performance generated a lot of discussion. Everton 2-3 Brighton Brighton have piled more pressure on Rafael Benitez as they climbed to eighth in the Premier League with victory at Goodison Park. Alexis Mac Allister scored a third-minute opener for the visitors following Neal Maupay's cushioned header and Dan Burn headed in when unmarked at the back post to double the lead just before the half-hour mark. The returning Dominic Calvert-Lewin had the chance to respond from the penalty spot. However, he fired his spot-kick over. Half-time was met by thousands of boos from home fans. Gordon gave his side hope of a fightback with a deflected shot eight minutes after half-time. Allan drew a superb save from Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez as Everton chased an equaliser but Mac Allister's excellent second put the away side back in control.
