PL News: Ange Postecoglou close to becoming Spurs boss

Reports from across England and Scotland have suggested Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has agreed to become the new Tottenham manager on a two-year contract.

The Australian has just finished his second season at Celtic. He has them to the Scottish title both years and the domestic treble this campaign. Could he continue going forward with the Parkhead side.

Spurs have been searching for a new main man since Antonio Conte's exit in March. Cristian Stellini and then Ryan Mason both took on the job on an interim basis but struggled to have any success. Cristian Stellini's was arguably a huge disaster.

Very few Tottenham fans will ever really forget that horrible afternoon at Newcastle a few weeks ago.

The final elements of the deal are being finalised before an official announcement from North London.

Postecoglou's only experience in Europe before joining Celtic in 2021 had been a spell in charge of Greek lower league side Panachaiki in 2008.

He has won the Australian title with South Melbourne and Brisbane Roar, Japan's top flight with Yokohama F Marinos. He also led the Australian national team to victory at the 2015 Asian Cup.

Postecoglou will take charge a Tottenham side that finished eighth in the Premier League, and they now face a first season without European football since 2009-10.

Following the failure of their last few managers, this appointment appears to represent a very different tactic for the club. It is clear from speaking with a number of Spurs fans that they are really desperate for success. They haven't won a trophy since 2008.

What are Spurs fan saying?

Greg, a Spurs fan from Halifax, told us: "I think this could be a really good appointment for a number of different reasons. Firstly he wants to join us and doesn't consider it to be 'beneath him'. He plays a fantastic type of football and knows how to win trophies. He's also not too high profile and just gets on with the job. As we're not in the Champions or Europa League next season, he will have time mould the team on the training pitches. It's time for some better times at the club. Could he even persuade Harry Kane to stay at the club for another season? What a story that could be."

Phil was positive about the manager himself but was slightly concerned about whether the club will suit him. He added: "The man is clearly very intelligent and a good manager. However, will Levy give him the funds and resources to thrive here? I'm not sure."

Leaving Celtic as a Treble Winner

In their recent Scottish final, Celtic proved too strong for Inverness Caledonian Thistle as they claimed the Scottish Cup and a fifth domestic treble in seven seasons. On Saturday, he told the media that he'll saviour the feeling of this success.

He also added to other outlets: "I'm very proud. It's been an extraordinary season by the boys. We caught people by surprise last year. It's always hard defending things. The challenge was, 'can we be better this year and we push on?'

What do Celtic fans think?

Seah is a massive Celtic fan from Edinburgh. He told us: "Ultimately, you can't compete with the huge riches of the big Premier League sides. We are ultimately the biggest fish in a tiny pool.

Brian gave some thoughts as to what could come next for the Bhoys in Green and White. He said: "Could we bring back Brendan Rodgers? It sounds crazy given the circumstances in which he left us a few years ago but he has the correct personality to thrive again."

Frankie added: "It is disappointing obviously. However, he leaves the club as a legend. He won the treble and has signed some truly excellent players. We are now in a fantastic position to build on that success and maybe even start to perform better in the Champions League."

Sam also added: "Rich: He will leave Glasgow with our biggest thanks. When thinking about the replacement, I would bring in Rodgers again. However, I'd be happy for the club to go for another more interesting new manager. I think we all tend to forget that football does exist outside Europe."
