Premier League: Dyche faces reality as Everton lose derby

 Liverpool 2 - 0 Everton

It was a derby day dream for Liverpool and a nightmare for Everton

Mohamed Salah scored his first league goal at Anfield since October while new £35m signing Cody Gakpo converted his first goal for the club in a comfortable victory against Sean Dyche’s relegation-threatened team.

Toothless Toffees

Without Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Everton had no major threat in attack. However, they almost took the lead through a James Tarkowski header that struck a post. This was 15 seconds before Mohamed Salah gave Liverpool the lead with Jordan Pickford going awol in his penalty area.

Ultimately, it was very comfortable for Liverpool

The game petered out the longer the half went on. Everton saw more of the ball but without being able to convert it into tangible efforts on goal. With 15 minutes remaining, Neal Maupay and Tom Davies joined the action in place of Amadou Onana and Dwight McNiel. From a Liverpool perspective, it was the perfect opportunity for Cody Gakpo to get off the mark for the Anfield side.

Fan reaction

We spoke with several fans after the match. Sarah, an Everton fan, said: "We were very poor. Any momentum from the Arsenal game is now lost."

Another Everton fan, James from Manchester, was also concerned with the result and performance: "The performance was awful. Five wins probably keep us up. I'm not sure we collect those results though."

Another fan was more positive. Richy commented on the Everton highlights: "Heads up Everton fans. Dyche was trying to find his best 11. Tested all combinations. He wanted to yes who and where makes mistakes, and now he can fix that. Dcl will most likely be able to play and I'm pretty sure that many people will be surprised about the next game's result. I think he will play the same squad against Leeds. The real Everton will show up on Saturday at Goodison."

Regular reader Barry told us: "That was not good enough tonight, last week you all said the minimum requirement is maximum effort. I didn't see that last night. It looked like they weren't up for it after getting caught out on the counter. There wasn't a glove left on them. It was very disappointing."

The Liverpool boss was clearly delighted with the result and performance.
