Premier League: Palace stun Liverpool again

Image
Liverpool 0 - 1 Crystal Palace  Crystal Palace have done it against Liverpool again.  Older fans of the London club would have been taken back to the 1990 FA Cup semi-final. Younger fans would have been remembering that stunning comeback from 3-0 down in 2014 that wrecked their title chances. What is it about Palace and destroying Liverpool's trophy dreams? The reaction to the final whistle suggested that this was a hugely damaging week for Liverpool. Jürgen Klopp congratulated his opponent on a Crystal Palace victory that has reverberated at both ends of the table before puffing out his cheeks and shaking his head in despair.  At the end of the match, Andy Robertson looked like he was in a trance. The home fans filed out of Anfield in total silence. In a title race with the tightest margins, Liverpool have blinked first.  Arsenal, would of course, blink later on in the day. This ultimately makes it advantage for Manchester City. It's starting to look like the pressure is

Premier League: Arsenal thrash Crystal Palace

Image
Arsenal 5 - 0 Crystal Palace Arsenal revived their pursuit of the Premier League title with an emphatic victory over struggling Crystal Palace at the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners' aspirations for the top spot had waned towards the close of the previous year, suffering three defeats in their last five Premier League fixtures. However, a rejuvenated Arsenal returned with newfound vigour under the guidance of Mikel Arteta.  Three points were sealed through a Gabriel header, an own goal from Dean Henderson , a composed finish by Leandro Trossard, and two late strikes from Gabriel Martinelli. The first two goals originated from corner kicks, with Gabriel nodding in the opener in the 11th minute. Another set-piece led to the defender's header striking Crystal Palace goalkeeper Henderson, deflecting into the net. The visitors struggled to mount a response, and Arsenal extended their lead in the second half when Trossard calmly finished in a one-on-one situation with the goalkee

FA Cup: Palace and Everton will go again

Image
Crystal Palace 0 - 0 Everton The FA Cup third round weekend started with a rather boring 0-0 draw between Palace and Everton. The game wasn't without controversy though. Everton have lodged an appeal against the red card given to Dominic Calvert-Lewin during their goalless draw against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup third-round.  If the appeal is unsuccessful, Calvert-Lewin could miss not only the third-round replay but also upcoming Premier League fixtures against Aston Villa and Fulham. The striker is facing a three-match ban due to his dismissal following a sliding challenge on Nathaniel Clyne, as determined by a VAR review during the second half. More VAR news and stories Referee Chris Kavanagh initially did not award a free-kick, but after reviewing the incident on the pitchside monitor, he deemed there was enough contact with Clyne's shin to warrant Calvert-Lewin's dismissal. Premier League: Late penalty secures dramatic win for Chelsea

Image
Chelsea 2 - 1 Crystal Palace Noni Madueke secured a crucial victory for Chelsea with an 89th-minute penalty against Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League. The home team took the lead in the 13th minute after Malo Gusto's impressive play led to Mykhailo Mudryk slotting the ball home from close range. However, Palace equalized just before half-time when Michael Olise converted Jordan Ayew's cross into a bottom corner screamer. Despite numerous chances, Chelsea struggled to convert, raising concerns that their profligate finishing might haunt them for the second consecutive match under manager Mauricio Pochettino. In the 77th minute, Nicolas Jackson thought he had scored, only for VAR to rule him offside after poking in Thiago Silva's deep cross. In a tense finale, Chelsea finally got the breakthrough when VAR spotted a foul by Eberechi Eze on substitute Madueke inside the box. Madueke expertly converted the penalty, sending Palace keeper Dean Henderson

Premier League: Palace fight back to draw against City

Image
Manchester City 2 - 2 Crystal Palace Manchester City's bid to defend their title faced another setback when Michael Olise's 95th-minute penalty salvaged a thrilling draw for Crystal Palace. City had a comfortable 2-0 lead with goals from Jack Grealish and Rico Lewis, seemingly heading for victory until Jean-Philippe Mateta scored with 14 minutes left. Michael Olise calmly converted, sparking jubilation among the away fans. This draw, City's third consecutive at home, puts them in fourth place, trailing leaders Liverpool by three points. Premier League: Potentially vital win for Luton Town

Image
Luton Town 2 - 1 Crystal Palace Luton manager Rob Edwards has expressed his desire for his players not to "throw a celebration" following Jacob Brown's late goal against Crystal Palace.  Brown's goal in the 81st minute secured Luton's first home triumph in the Premier League this season.  The game only came to life in the second half, with one of the few noteworthy moments in the initial period being Odsonne Edouard's disallowed goal due to the ball bouncing off Luton defender Tom Lockyer and onto the hand of the Palace striker. This narrow escape injected energy into Luton, and Teden Mengi capitalized on a loose ball in the box, breaking the deadlock with a poke-in after a corner flick-on. This was the first moment on what turned out to be an exciting 10 minutes.  What a way for @TedenMengi to mark his first goal in senior football. 🔥 pic.twitter.com/ghCYYe1Y5Z — Luton Town FC (@LutonTown) November 26, 2023 More Luton Town news from eurosuperfootb

Premier League: Palace win at Old Trafford again

Image
Manchester United 0 - 1 Crystal Palace Manchester United suffered their second consecutive home defeat in the Premier League as Crystal Palace secured an impressive victory at Old Trafford, thanks to Joachim Andersen's outstanding strike. These two teams had clashed just five days earlier, with Erik ten Hag's side comfortably winning 3-0 in the Carabao Cup . However, Palace had rested several key players for that match and presented a different challenge on Saturday, delivering an excellent away performance. Palace took the lead after Tyrick Mitchell cleared Rasmus Hojlund's shot off the line. Andersen then brilliantly fired a first-time shot into the top corner from a free-kick. Despite Manchester United's relentless pressure, t hey struggled to breach Palace's defence. When they did manage to break through, goalkeeper Sam Johnstone made crucial saves, first tipping Bruno Fernandes' dipping shot over the bar and then denying Hojlund's powerful header.

EFL Cup: United impress against Palace

Image
Manchester United 3 - 0 Crystal Palace Holders United moved into the last 16 of the Carabao Cup after goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Casemiro before Martial's clinical first-time effort 10 minutes after the restart. After a few weeks of chaos, this was the kind of night United manager Erik ten Hag must have wanted as his side clinched their most significant win of the season. With Mason Mount back in the starting XI and fellow summer signing Sofyan Amrabat making his first start, Ten Hag was at least able to integrate some key pieces of his United puzzle. There were also plenty of examples of controlled possession, which Ten Hag has so far struggled to implement. Evidently, the game plan was to create an overload on the United right with lofted cross-field passes from the left, which both Amrabat and Mount were able to execute. Morocco international Amrabat caught the eye as an inverted left-back. The on-loan Fiorentina man's early shot was poor, but he was excellent

Premier League: Wolves edge closer to safety

Image
Wolverhampton Wanderers 2 - 0 Crystal Palace Wolves gave their survival hopes a massive lift with what turned out to be a fairly comfortable win over Palace. In a match that was low on clear-cut chances, Wolves went in front after three minutes when Ruben Neves' corner bounced off the knee of Palace centre-back Joachim Andersen and in off the crossbar. A slightly nervy affair was settled by Neves' stoppage-time penalty as Wolves, who were bottom of the table when Lopetegui took charge in November, moved nine points clear of the relegation zone. This surely means survival for the home side.  Premier League news (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) Albert Sambi Lokonga came closest to providing a Palace equaliser before half-time but his snap-shot from eight yards out was saved by Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa. Premier League: Palace thrash Leeds

Image
Leeds United 1 - 5 Crystal Palace Crystal Palace staged a remarkable second-half turnaround to give a significant boost to their Premier League survival hopes. This stunned Leeds and left them with plenty of work to do in their own bid to avoid a trip to the Championship. Palace dominated the second half. For as sharp and hungry as Leeds were in the first 45 minutes, they were disjointed and lethargic after the break as the players and fans were left in disbelief as Palace tore them apart. The Eagles scored four goals after the break with Jordan Ayew - in for the injured Wilfried Zaha - scoring two in an incredible demolition of the home side. <More Crystal Palace news and stories> After taking the lead through Patrick Bamford, it all went downhill as Marc Guehi flicked in an equaliser on the stroke of half-time before Palace scored two goals in two minutes soon after the break. First, Ayew made it 2-1 with an excellent header before Eberechi Eze added a quick third. Odsonn

Premier League: Patrick Vieira dismissed as Palace manager

Image
Another Premier League boss has lost his job. On Friday 17th March, Crystal Palace confirmed that Patrick Vieira has left his post as First Team Manager.  Three members of his coaching staff - Osian Roberts, Kristian Wilson and Saïd Aïgoun - have also left the club. Chairman Steve Parish told cpfc.co.uk: “It is with enormous regret that this difficult decision has been made. Ultimately, results in recent months have placed us in a precarious league position and we felt a change is necessary to give us the best chance of retaining Premier League status. That said, Patrick’s impact since joining us in the summer of 2021 has been significant, and he is held in the highest regard by myself, and all of his colleagues.  "He led the team to a Wembley FA Cup semi-final and a respectable 12th-placed finish last season playing some exciting football, which was a challenging and crucial campaign for the club given the changes we made to the squad prior to his arrival." Premier League: United display defiance to beat Palace

Image
"Another sign that things are going in the right direction." When Casemiro was shown a red card following a melee involving multiple players in their match against Crystal Palace, the Red Devils were in a comfortable position. However, that and a late Palace goal threatened to change the game. They showed a lot of character to hold on to, and this has impressed fans and pundits. Manchester United have beaten Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City this season. It was this win that has again given fans some more hope.  One United fan told our friends at Super Reds Super News: "This feels like a very important win for us. We dominated the game for around 70 minutes before the red card and the Crystal Palace goal. The character on display after that was perhaps a sign that we are going in a positive direction." United Review: Important win a sign of progress (superredssupernews.blogspot.com) "A big compliment to the team..." The United boss

Premier League: Fulham move closer to European places

Image
Crystal Palace 0 - 3 Fulham "The connection with the fans is stronger than it's ever been." 🫂 @timream5 | #FFC — Fulham Football Club (@FulhamFC) December 27, 2022 It was a nightmare Boxing Day for Patrick Vieira and Crystal Palace as they lost 3-0, finishing the game with 9 men. Bobby Decordova-Reid, Tim Ream and Aleksandar Mitrovic scored, with Palace overpowered by their London rivals as they ended the game with nine men. Tyrick Mitchell was dismissed for a foul on Kenny Tete just three minutes after his side went behind. James Tomkins then followed him before the hour. Despite being dominant in the match throughout, Marco Silva's side were helped by Palace's indiscipline, which put a stop to their hopes of a fourth straight home win. The result strengthens the visitors' unlikely European push, as they sit in eighth, just two points off the top six. Heading towards the half-hour mark, Palace, having struggled to impose themselves early on, almost

Premier League: Zaha shines again for Palace

Crystal Palace 2 - 1 Wolves  Wilfried Zaha scored a well-taken winner to seal Crystal Palace's terrific turnaround against managerless Wolves.  Picture from Flickr: Credit -  Ben Terrett Before the Zaha show, Adama Traore's header had earned the visitors a deserved half-time lead. This was almost doubled when Ruben Neves hit the post right on the stroke of half-time at Selhurst Park.  The game started to look very different once the second half had started. Palace never looked back once Eberechi Eze nodded them level from Michael Olise's pinpoint cross just 63 seconds into the second half. Zaha then took Odsonne Edouard's pass in his stride before drilling past Jose Sa for his fifth goal of the season to lift Palace up to 10th place in the Premier League table.  Wolves remain 17th and just one point above the relegation places. They came close to rescuing a point in London but Neves' late strike was superbly beaten away by Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita. Pre

Premier League: Everton safe after dramatic night

Image
Everton 3 - 2 Crystal Palace Everton secured their Premier League status after coming back from two goals down to beat Crystal Palace. Before the match, Everton fans had created a remarkable atmosphere. This carried on into the stadium. Initially, the hosts looked like they were heading for a potentially damaging defeat after the away side scored twice in the first half through Jean-Philippe Mateta and Jordan Ayew. Everton turned the game around in the second half, thanks to a more attacking approach. Nine minutes after the break Michael Keane smashed in to give Frank Lampard's side hope. When Richarlison found the bottom corner with a deflected shot with 15 minutes left, it sent Goodison Park into raptures as a precious point looked likely. The best was to come with five minutes left. Dominic Calvert-Lewin,  sparked pandemonium with a diving header from Demarai Gray's free-kick. The excitement boiled over as fans descended on the pitch to celebrate. Watch the highlights i

PL: Manchester City held by Crystal Palace

Image
Crystal Palace 0 - 0 Manchester City Manchester City missed their chance to go six points clear at the top of the Premier League.  They were held by a resilient Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. The away side dominated proceedings. They twice hit the woodwork and defender Aymeric Laporte failed to find the net with the goal at his mercy in the first half. In front of a fantastic atmosphere, Palace frustrated the Premier League leaders but created little themselves going forward. A point keeps them 11th as they boosted their hopes of a top-half finish. Let's have a look at the best reaction Pep Guardiola told BBC Sport: "We play a really good game. In 90 minutes we concede mistakes a little bit, but the way we played was really good. "Luck doesn't exist in football. We have to score goals and we didn't do it. We played to score goals and concede few. We struggled a little bit." One City fan told us: I really think we might regret this result. Liverpool are

PL: Manchester United 1 - 0 Crystal Palace

Manchester United made a winning start to life under interim boss Ralf Rangnick thanks to Fred's 77th-minute winner. A more energetic United display looked like going unrewarded against a dogged Crystal Palace outfit until Fred struck first-time from Mason Greenwood's lay-off to send a superb 20-yard effort curling over Vicente Guaita and into the top corner. It was only Fred's second goal of the season - and the first time since the middle of September that United have recorded back-to-back league wins. Until the Brazilian's effort, Rangnick's side created numerous decent chances, without really looking as though they were going to score and Guaita would probably have saved an Alex Telles free-kick that skimmed the bar had it been on target. PL: Crystal Palace 1 - 2 Aston Villa

Image
Steven Gerrard says his Villa side still have room for improvement after he secured his second win as manager with a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. The former Liverpool captain was jubilant when Matt Targett put Villa ahead with a low drive through a crowd of bodies from Ashley Young's corner on 15 minutes. As Palace tried to salvage something in the second half, John McGinn curled a beautiful shot into the top corner from the edge of the box to double the visitors' lead against the run of play. Palace did eventually manage to score a late consolation through Marc Guehi. It was not enough to deny Villa. More Premier League news All the reaction Steven Gerrard spoke with BBC Match of the Day: "We can't get carried away. It has been a positive couple of weeks. The players have been fantastic in their application. We had to dig in at times today but we managed to get over the line which is nice." One Villa fan told us: "It was another grea
