Fa Cup: Spurs eventually cruise past Preston

Image
Preston 0 - 3 Tottenham Hotspur Spurs were up for the cup Two excellent strikes by Son Heung-min and a debut goal for Arnaut Danjuma were enough to beat Preston and send Tottenham through in the FA Cup. The away side were frustrated by their Championship opponents until the 50th minute when Son let fly from 30 yards. The South Korea international then turned and finished smartly to double the lead amid torrential rain. Danjuma, signed on loan from Villarreal this week, completed the scoring after coming on as a late substitute. Reaction Greg, a Spurs fan from Halifax, said: "A good win to improve confidence." This was a view supported by Amy. She added: "Nice and easy in the end." Tottenham forward Son Heung-min, told BBC One: “I needed those goals for my confidence. It was really important. It was the kind of position I like to shoot. In the first half I had a couple of chances to shoot but the keeper made a good save. “As a striker or as an attacking player, t

Southampton 2 - 1 Blackpool The Saints have done well in the EFL Cup, can they do similar in the FA Cup Southampton's Romain Perraud scored either side of half-time as his side survived a fightback by Championship strugglers Blackpool to reach the next round of the cup. Perraud broke the deadlock with a thumping effort into the far corner midway through the first half. He doubled his and Saints' tally just after the hour mark, collecting Sekou Mara's return pass before finishing confidently past visiting goalkeeper Chris Maxwell. Blackpool twice went close to cancelling out Perraud's opener but Gerry Yates and Ian Poveda both failed to make the most of good opportunities. Arsenal loanee Charlie Patino converted Yates' pass to reduce the arrears with just under 25 minutes left, but Nathan Jones' team held on. Reaction Ryan, a Blackpool fan, said: "It was a decent performance from us, but we just didn't have the quality in the final third. Promising si

Fa Cup: City edge out Arsenal

Manchester City 1 - 0 Arsenal The Fa Cup 4th round schedule began with an interesting match in Manchester. Arsenal have established an impressive lead in the league but it was City who shaded a tight contest thanks to Ake's precise 64th-minute finish. The Gunners had chances of their own, especially in the first half when City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega saved well from Takehiro Tomiyasu and new signing Leandro Trossard. What impact will this have on the title?  This was the first that the Premier League's top two had met this season and it was just as close as everyone had expected. Arsenal are currently five points ahead of City with a game in hand. However, both sides still have to play each other twice between now and the end of

EFL: Sunderland sign Leeds striker on loan

Image
Is this is a good move for everyone concerned? Leeds United striker Joe Gelhardt had been linked with a return to his former club Wigan Athletic but in the end, he made the temporary move to Sunderland. The 20-year-old will remain with the Black Cats until the end of the season after making 15 Premier League appearances so far this campaign. Gelhardt becomes the Wearside club's third signing of the January window after Pierre Ekwah and Isaac Lihadji. The England Under-20 international has scored two goals in 41 first-team appearances for Leeds and joins a Sunderland side who lie in ninth place in the Championship, a point outside the play-offs. All the best reaction Manager Tony Mowbray told the Sunderland website: "It is no secret that Joe had plenty of options on the table this month, so it is a testament to the club and its staff that he felt Sunderland was the best move for him. He has made an impact at Premier League level throughout the past 18 months, and he i

Scotland: Darvel cause huge shock

Image
Darvel 1 - 0 Aberdeen Darvel produced probably the biggest upset in the history of the Scottish Cup as the sixth-tier outfit defeated top-flight Aberdeen. Jordan Kirkpatrick's first-half shot on the spin at Recreation Park deflected past Joe Lewis to put Darvel on course for a last-16 home tie with Falkirk. Chris Truesdale made three great close-range saves from Aberdeen forwards Ryan Duncan and Luis Lopes. However, the West of Scotland Premier Division leaders held on. What a remarkable result. The embarrassing exit has piled further pressure on Pittodrie manager Jim Goodwin who has been under fire from fans and the media recently. Reaction Darvel manager Mick Kennedy told the media: "I believed in the guys all week. It's about togetherness and love and respect. We've been driving that home all week. We probably deserved to go in front. We had to show our togetherness. The community has been unbelievable. From the first day I came here, I told the board we are go

Premier League: Pressure increases at Everton

West Ham United 2 - 0 Everton Familiar failings plagued Everton, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin isolated and Demarai Gray ineffective. Their best chance fell to Yerry Mina, who scooped over when the game was goalless, and they were shaky as soon after West Ham responded to the crowd’s demands for more urgency. West Ham made their physicality count and they led when a cross from their left wing-back, Emerson Palmieri, exposed the weaknesses in Everton’s defending. Kurt Zouma, back from injury and impressing alongside Nayef Aguerd and Angelo Ogbonna at the back, wanted it more than James Tarkowski and Conor Coady. It was easy for Zouma to flick the ball on and there was too much space for Bowen, who rushed in to guide a simple finish over Pickford. West Ham are always more dangerous when Bowen, who had not scored a l
