Premier League: Wolves and Man United play out a classic

Image
Wolves 3 - 4 Manchester United Kobbie Mainoo secured a dramatic victory for Manchester United, sealing a 4-3 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in a match that will be remembered as a Premier League classic. Mainoo elegantly curled in his maiden Premier League goal, slipping it past Jose Sa just moments after Pedro Neto seemed to have salvaged a draw for Wolves. Despite being 2-0 down at halftime and 3-1 behind on 85 minutes, Wolves managed to pull level. However, Manchester United clinched the three points thanks to 18-year-old Mainoo. He collected the ball on the left, skillfully nutmegged Max Kilman, cut inside, and beautifully bent the ball into the bottom corner. The scoring began with Marcus Rashford, who, five minutes into his return for United after missing the FA Cup win over Newport County , opened the scoring. Rasmus Hojlund then doubled the lead. Pablo Sarabia pulled one back from the penalty spot, and Scott McTominay seemingly made it secure for the visitors by hea...

Premier League: Title challengers start campaign with a win

Image
Arsenal 2 - 0 Wolves Arsenal began their Premier League campaign with a straightforward win against Wolves at the Emirates Stadium. Kai Havertz opened the scoring for the Gunners in the first half, heading in from Bukayo Saka’s cross from the right. After the break, Saka added a second with a powerful left-footed strike into the right corner, capitalising on a quickly taken free-kick that caught the visitors off guard. A closer look at the match Although Arsenal weren't at their best, they were always in control and fully deserved the victory against determined opposition. Wolves debutant Jorgen Strand Larsen had a good chance in the first half, but his header was well saved by Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya. Substitute Matheus Cunha had an opportunity to equalise, but Raya comfortably dealt with his weak effort as Wolves pressed for a goal. Despite their efforts, Wolves manager Gary O’Neil will have few complaints about the result, as his team struggled to create clear chances ...

Chelsea beat Wolves to end five-game winless run

Image
Chelsea 3 - 1 Wolves Chelsea ended their five-match winless streak in the Premier League with an impressive second-half performance against Wolves, securing a much-needed victory that lifted them into the top four. Author - Lauren W After Tosin Adarabioyo’s opener was cancelled out by Matt Doherty, quickfire goals in the second half from Marc Cucurella and Noni Madueke ensured the hosts took all three points at Stamford Bridge. Cucurella, making his 100th Premier League appearance, found the net from close range after Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall flicked on Madueke’s cross. Moments later, Madueke doubled Chelsea’s lead, heading in from a corner after Trevoh Chalobah—back in action following his loan spell at Crystal Palace—rose highest to nod the ball into his path. The goals came as a relief for Chelsea, particularly goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, who was at fault for Wolves’ equaliser just before half-time. Spotting Sánchez off his line, Matheus Cunha whipped in a teasing delivery that the ...

Premier League: Wolves edge closer to safety

Image
Wolverhampton Wanderers 2 - 0 Crystal Palace Wolves gave their survival hopes a massive lift with what turned out to be a fairly comfortable win over Palace. In a match that was low on clear-cut chances, Wolves went in front after three minutes when Ruben Neves' corner bounced off the knee of Palace centre-back Joachim Andersen and in off the crossbar. A slightly nervy affair was settled by Neves' stoppage-time penalty as Wolves, who were bottom of the table when Lopetegui took charge in November, moved nine points clear of the relegation zone. This surely means survival for the home side.  Premier League news (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) Albert Sambi Lokonga came closest to providing a Palace equaliser before half-time but his snap-shot from eight yards out was saved by Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa. A closer look at all their match reports from the 2023/2024 season The campaign started with an unlucky 1-0 defeat against Manchester United . In this match, Raphael Varane secured the decisive goal with just 14 minutes remaining, propelling Manchester United to a somewhat lucky victory.  Following the match, one Wolves fan told us: "We were brilliant throughout the match except for their finishing touches. Despite a summer filled with doubts and pessimism, We outperformed them for significant periods of the game. On another occasion, we could have secured a comfortable victory...

Transfer Rumours: United linked with Gomes

Image
Let's explore another transfer rumour Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a move for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes.  United are looking to sign a holding midfielder this summer and they have identified the £40million-rated Gomes as someone who can take them forward. Gomes has been watched by United on several occasions this season, most recently earlier this month when Wolves beat Fulham 2-1 at Molineux in the Premier League. Premier League news and stories: 2023/2024 Premier League: Wolves and Man United play out a classic  Wolves are aware there will be interest in Gomes over the next few months. One of his standout performances came when his side beat Treble winners Manchester City 2-1 earlier this season and scored both goals in a win by the same scoreline over Spurs last month. He fits the profile of new United minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, now in charge of the club's football operations, who wants an end to the policy of spending exorbitant fees on...

Premier League: Wolves win West Midlands derby

Image
Wolves 1 - 0 Aston Villa Victory on derby day over Aston Villa tasted all the sweeter for Wolves as it left them within touching distance of survival. Toti Gomes' bullet header settled a typically lively West Midlands clash and secured Wolves a fourth successive Molineux triumph. This has created a ten-point gap between them and the drop zone. Toti’s first goal for the club proved to be the game's only goal, with striking duo Matheus Cunha and Diego Costa both coming close, but it mattered not as a fiery atmosphere brought home the three points. This could lead to Premier League safety soon rather than later.  Let's explore the post-match reaction from the West Midlands. The full-time whistle sparked joyous scenes of celebration and another Premier League season is now within touching distance for the club. For Villa, it represents a missed opportunity in their quest for European qualification.  Danny, a Wolves Season Ticket holder, said: "That is a massive result...

Premier League: Brighton win but positives to take for Wolves

Image
Wolves 2 - 3 Brighton & Hove Albion There was an absolute Premier League cracker in the Midlands. On the day former Spain and Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui was announced as their next manager, Wolves showed battling qualities as they played the second-half a man down following Nelson Semedo's red card just before half-time. A pulsating opening period saw Wolves respond to falling behind to a rare Adam Lallana goal with Goncalo Guedes and a Ruben Neves penalty putting them 2-1 up. However, they then conceded an equaliser a minute from Japan international Kaoru Mitoma before the break. Semedo's dismissal for a foul on Mitoma shortly afterwards then drastically changed the dynamic of the contest. Winger Mitoma was a pivotal figure in the game and it was his run into the box that created the opportunity for Gross' winner.  After often being accused of wastefulness in front of goal, Brighton have now scored 7 goals in two matches and they look a threat every time the...

Wolves showed their intent after the break and doubled their advantage in just five minutes when Toti Gomes found space to head in at the far post. Gary O'Neil's sid...

Premier League: United start with a tense win

Image
Manchester United 1 - 0 Wolverhampton Wanderers It was a better start for United than last season, but this was unconvincing on their first match of the season.  Raphael Varane secured the decisive goal with just 14 minutes remaining, propelling Manchester United to a somewhat lucky victory.  Until Bruno Fernandes' brilliant pass set up Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the penalty area, Erik ten Hag's team struggled to create meaningful scoring opportunities. With composure, the right-back skillfully lofted the ball that was bouncing unpredictably towards the outskirts of the six-yard box. It was at this juncture that Varane's superior height came into play, allowing him to outjump Nelson Semedo and elegantly direct a header into the net. Was this penalty There was a hugely controversial moment in the match. Watch the video and let us know if you thought it was a penalty. In reality, had Wolves got the penalty and scored it, it would have been a deserved draw." Should Wolve...

A bad Boxing Day for Manchester United

Image
Wolverhampton Wanderers 2 - 0 Manchester United Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes saw red for the third time this season, as Wolves maintained their perfect start under new manager VĂtor Pereira with a 2-0 win over the Red Devils. Author - Olivia T Fernandes was sent off just two minutes into the second half after receiving a second yellow card. This follows earlier dismissals against Tottenham and Porto, adding to what has been a frustrating campaign for the United skipper. Was this a significant moment in the match? Wolves wasted no time making their numerical advantage count. Eleven minutes later, Matheus Cunha delivered a moment of dĂ©jĂ  vu for United fans, scoring directly from a corner—just as Tottenham’s Son Heung-min had done a week earlier. Cunha’s delivery floated over AndrĂ© Onana’s reach in a packed six-yard box, exposing United’s continued struggles to defend set-pieces. The game was put to bed deep into added time. With United desperately searching for an equali...

Premier League: Man United strengthen their bid for a top-four finish

Image
Manchester United 2 - 0 Wolverhampton Wanderers Manchester United bounced back from consecutive Premier League to strengthen their bid for a top-four finish. Erik ten Hag's side had lost to Brighton and West Ham to give Liverpool hope of finishing in the top 4. However, despite a far-from-perfect performance, United never looked like losing again. Antony provided the assist for United's first-half breakthrough. He was played in by Bruno Fernandes, and the winger squared to Anthony Martial for what was an easy tap-in. More Premier League news can be found here:  Premier League news (eurosuperfootball.blogspot.com) Antony had another opportunity to get on the scoresheet in the second half but he drove a shot just wide of the post after being set up by a Fernandes backheel. Substitute Garnacho finally got Manchester United's second when the teenager raced through in the fourth minute of stoppage time before firing past Dan Bentley. The Colombian ended a 10-game goal drought by bundling the ball over the line after Salah’s pass was deflected in the box by Wolves defender Toti Gomes. Liverpool doubled their advantage 22 minutes later when referee Simon Hooper awarded a penalty after Wolves keeper JosĂ© Sá brought ...

Could Nottingham Forest win the Premier League?

Image
Wolves 0 - 3 Nottingham Forest Morgan Gibbs-White played a starring role as Nottingham Forest secured a clinical victory over Wolves, with new England manager Thomas Tuchel watching from the stands. Author -  Kieran M   The midfielder silenced the boos from the home crowd early on, scoring the opener just seven minutes in. Gibbs-White, who left Wolves for Forest in 2022, had the perfect response to his former club's jeers. Chris Wood doubled the lead just before half-time, notching his 12th goal of the season, while Taiwo Awoniyi sealed the win in stoppage time, finishing off a swift counter-attack. Wolves, however, had their opportunities. Joao Gomes and Jorgen Strand Larsen forced saves from Forest keeper Matz Sels, and Larsen was denied by a remarkable goal-line clearance from Murillo. This marked Forest’s 12th league victory of the season—three more than their total for the entire previous campaign. The win showcased the team’s key strengths, with opposition sides cont...

Image
Crystal Palace 2 - 1 Wolves  Wilfried Zaha scored a well-taken winner to seal Crystal Palace's terrific turnaround against managerless Wolves.  Picture from Flickr: Credit -  Ben Terrett Before the Zaha show, Adama Traore's header had earned the visitors a deserved half-time lead. This was almost doubled when Ruben Neves hit the post right on the stroke of half-time at Selhurst Park.  The game started to look very different once the second half had started. Palace never looked back once Eberechi Eze nodded them level from Michael Olise's pinpoint cross just 63 seconds into the second half. Zaha then took Odsonne Edouard's pass in his stride before drilling past Jose Sa for his fifth goal of the season to lift Palace up to 10th place in the Premier League table.  Wolves remain 17th and just one point above the relegation places. They came close to rescuing a point in London but Neves' late strike was superbly beaten away by Palace goalkeeper Vicente Guaita. ...

Another home defeat for Manchester United

Image
Manchester United 0 - 1 Wolves Manchester United's league struggles deepened as Pablo Sarabia’s free-kick earned Wolves a fifth consecutive Premier League victory, their best run in the top flight since 1970. Author - Olivia T Stadium - Old Trafford The contrast with United’s midweek display against Lyon could hardly have been starker. This latest defeat was their 15th of the season, eclipsing last year’s total and marking their worst campaign since 1989–90, when they lost 16 times. Ruben Amorim’s side have now been beaten at home by Wolves, joining Crystal Palace, Brighton, Bournemouth, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest in claiming three points at Old Trafford since the Portuguese manager took charge in November. United have collected just nine points from their past ten league outings. In that stretch, their only victories have come against Leicester and Ipswich, both of whom are in the relegation zone. Rasmus Højlund came close to equalising, narrowly failing to connect with A...

Premier League: Palace hold Chelsea

Image
Chelsea 1 - 1  Crystal Palace Eberechi Eze scored a brilliant equaliser as Crystal Palace held Chelsea to a draw at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea, who hammered Wolves 6-2 last week , dominated the first half. Cole Palmer came close with a shot that went just wide, and Dean Henderson made a superb save to deny Noni Madueke, before Nicolas Jackson opened the scoring. Jackson finished off a swift Chelsea counter-attack by tapping in Palmer's cross at the near post. Palace were lucky not to be down to 10 men when Will Hughes, already on a yellow card, avoided further punishment for a foul on Palmer. Shortly after, the Eagles fans were celebrating as Eze curled a lovely shot past Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. Sanchez then made a fantastic save to deny Daichi Kamada's powerful effort and prevent Palace from taking the lead. In stoppage time, Jackson had a chance to win it for Chelsea, but Henderson saved his effort after he went through on goal. The draw marks Crystal Palace...

Premier League: Everton secure dramatic draw against Wolves

Image
Wolverhampton Wanderers 1 - 1 Everton Everton struck nine minutes into injury time to slightly boost their survival hopes and deny Wolves a fifth straight home success in the Premier League. A very important goal for Everton. https://t.co/IlqFoRT8ul pic.twitter.com/DRTEvyAM6o — SuperFootball (@ESFootballNews) May 21, 2023 It looked like Hee Chan Hwang had scored the winner for Wolves when he turned home the rebound after a lung-bursting run and powerful effort from Adama Traore, and his side could have put the game beyond doubt with chances either side of the break at Molineux.   Instead, relegation-threatened Everton earned their point at the death when James Tarkowski beat Dan Bentley in the air and Yerry Mina turned in from close range. The Everton boss Sean Dyche told the media: "Formation and tactics doesn't always win games, mentality wins games and gets us a point today with a firm mentality and people not making excuses. Premier League: Spurs pick up first victory under new manager

Image
Tottenham Hotspur 2 - 0 Manchester United Manchester United's first away match in the new Premier League season led to their first defeat. Tottenham overcame a poor first-half performance to secure a 2-0 victory. Pape Sarr's goal and Lisandro Martinez's unintended own-goal resulted in Tottenham's victory.  There was an argument that Erik ten Hag's squad were better than their 1-0 win against Wolves at Old Trafford. Particularly in the opening 45 minutes, their attacking intent was evident as Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, and the recent match-winner Raphael Varane all came close to scoring. Spurs rallied after half-time.This game marked their return to home turf after the departure of top scorer and captain Harry Kane to Bayern Munich.  In addition to their two goals, new goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario played a substantial role in this Spurs win. Manchester United also had reason to wonder about a VAR review that ruled out a potentia...
