PL News: A new manager heading to West Ham

Is Julen Lopetegui moving to London?

It has been reported that Julen Lopetegui has agreed to become the next manager of West Ham at the end of the season.

Update - It has now been announced that David Moyes will definitely leave the club at the end of the season.

Julen Lopetegui

While nothing has been finalised, the 57-year-old is close to making a return to management after leaving Wolves in August of last year.

The current West Ham manager, David Moyes, has started mounting pressure due to a poor run of results. The Hammers have won only one of their last nine Premier League games, and were eliminated from the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

They were recently thrashed 5-0 by Chelsea on Sunday, leaving them ninth in the table.

Moyes has repeatedly fended off questions about his future at the club, but it has now been confirmed that he will leave the club at the end of the current campaign.

The former Spain and Real Madrid coach, Lopetegui, has been linked with several jobs since leaving his previous roles. He is believed to be interested in returning to the Premier League after successfully guiding Wolves to safety last season. He joined the team when they were at the bottom of the table.

He had previously won the Europa League with Sevilla in 2020 before moving to Molineux two years later.

Wolves finished 13th under Lopetegui last season, but he had become frustrated by the club's financial situation before resigning.

For West Ham, Moyes presided over three successive European campaigns for the first time in the club’s history, and last June ended the Hammers' 43-year wait for a trophy with a last-minute victory over Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final.

However, many fans are critical of what they view as Moyes’ negative tactics.

Some immediate reaction

One West Ham fan posted on Twitter/X: "Thank you for everything, David Moyes. You’ve taken this club to heights I’d not previously had the pleasure of enjoying in my 37 years. You’ll always be remembered for that. Thank you and good luck."

Guy, another West Ham fan, told us: "I would love to see you join a club that appreciates his talents and where he can make a difference."

Jamie Pugh added: "Moyes has done amazing things for this football club, but this is the correct time for him to go. Despite this, I'm not sure that Julen Lopetegui is the correct boss to take us forward. He did well with Sevilla but not as good with Wolves."
