Transfer Rumours: United linked with Gomes

 Let's explore another transfer rumour

Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a move for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes.

United are looking to sign a holding midfielder this summer and they have identified the £40million-rated Gomes as someone who can take them forward. Gomes has been watched by United on several occasions this season, most recently earlier this month when Wolves beat Fulham 2-1 at Molineux in the Premier League.

Wolves are aware there will be interest in Gomes over the next few months. One of his standout performances came when his side beat Treble winners Manchester City 2-1 earlier this season and scored both goals in a win by the same scoreline over Spurs last month.

He fits the profile of new United minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, now in charge of the club's football operations, who wants an end to the policy of spending exorbitant fees on star names.

There has also been stories and social media posts linking him with a move to Arsenal. The North London side will want to keep improving, regardless of where they finish this season, and Gomes could be the  player to help them compete across 4 or 5 competitions.

More information about the player

Familiar with a deep midfield role, Gomes is known for his energy and commitment

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Gomes was on Flamengo's books right from the start, learning his trade through the club’s academy system, before being given his chance as a 19-year-old in November 2020.

The youngster was quickly in the thick of the action for Flamengo, and by the end of season one, where he featured 16 times, the midfielder had won the Brazilian league and Campeonato Carioca, a competition which sees Rio clubs compete.

Flamengo, Brazil’s most well-supported club, are often envied by fellow Rio sides, meaning derbies against the likes of Fluminense, which take place at the legendary Maracana, and Botafogo provided a baptism of fire for Gomes.

Further honours continued into the 2021 season when he was a regular fixture in the midfield, and last year, which ended in November ahead of the winter, Gomes and Flamengo were named champions of South America after beating Athletico Paranaense in the final.

That win last October proved to be one of Gomes’ final games for Flamengo. In 2023, Gomes finally signed for Wolverhampton Wanderers after a drawn-out saga between Wolves and Ligue 1 club Olympique Lyonnais for his signature. Could his next move be to Old Trafford?

What do you think about these rumours?

Liam, a Manchester United fan, said: "I think he would be a fantastic signing for us. He could form a great partnership with Mainoo."

Josh, also a Manchetser United fan, added: "I would love to see this player in a red shirt."

Danny, a Wolves fan, added: "We won't keep hold of him for long now. Let's hope we get a decent fee."
