Wolves: 23/24 Season Review

Let's explore how Wolves got on during their 2023/2024 campaign

It was the 146th season in the history of the club and their sixth consecutive season in the Premier League since they were promoted in 2018.

Wolves Season Review

Before the season, they parted company with Julen Lopetegui by mutual agreement. Only a day later, the former Bournemouth boss Gary O'Neil was appointed head coach on a three-year deal.

The campaign started with an unlucky 1-0 defeat against Manchester United. In this match, Raphael Varane secured the decisive goal with just 14 minutes remaining, propelling Manchester United to a somewhat lucky victory.

Following the match, one Wolves fan told us: "We were brilliant throughout the match except for their finishing touches. Despite a summer filled with doubts and pessimism, We outperformed them for significant periods of the game. On another occasion, we could have secured a comfortable victory or at the very least, a draw."

MUFC 1 - 0 Wolves

Less than a week later came one of their worst performances of the campaign against Brighton. The 4-1 defeat was perhaps a sign of the overall direction of their season.  Paul, a Wolves fan, told us: "That was a shocking performance. I feared a relegation battle at that point."

Better moments were to come though. On September 30, they beat Manchester City 2-1. This resulted in City's 100% start to the season coming to an end. Hwang Hee-chan scored a second-half winner to give Wolves a shock victory against the side that would go and clinch a fourth consecutive title at the end of the season.

One of the best matches of the entire Premier League season was the return fixture against Manchester United. It was a 4-3 defeat but Wolves looked great going forward and should have picked up a point. Kobbie Mainoo elegantly curled in his maiden Premier League goal, slipping it past Jose Sa just moments after Pedro Neto seemed to have salvaged a draw for the home side.

Towards the end of the season, Wolves had another run of form. This included going six games without a win. This run ended with a 2-1 win over Luton Town. A victory that would prove to be their final success of the campaign and they finished the season in 14th.
