Premier League: United start with a tense win

Manchester United 1 - 0 Wolverhampton Wanderers

It was a better start for United than last season, but this was unconvincing on their first match of the season.

MUFC 1 - 0 Wolves

Raphael Varane secured the decisive goal with just 14 minutes remaining, propelling Manchester United to a somewhat lucky victory.

Until Bruno Fernandes' brilliant pass set up Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the penalty area, Erik ten Hag's team struggled to create meaningful scoring opportunities.

With composure, the right-back skillfully lofted the ball that was bouncing unpredictably towards the outskirts of the six-yard box. It was at this juncture that Varane's superior height came into play, allowing him to outjump Nelson Semedo and elegantly direct a header into the net.

Was this penalty

There was a hugely controversial moment in the match. Watch the video and let us know if you thought it was a penalty. In reality, had Wolves got the penalty and scored it, it would have been a deserved draw."

Let's take a look at some of the best reaction from Manchester United fans.

Andrew is a Season Ticket Holder in East Stand, he told us: "I thought looked lethargic. Are those pre-season matches across the globe taking their toll? The build-up play was far too slow, with players static and a distinct lack of movement. At least we won though. It's a better start than last season."

Liam is a common contributor to this blog, he also spoke with us after the match: "Outpassed, outfought and completely outplayed for large parts of the game by a side tipped for the drop. If Wolves had a finisher, it could have been a repeat of Brentford away last season. That is a huge concern for us. On the positive side, I thought Varane was outstanding for us. We need him to stay fit all season.

Twitter user @Heathen1878 added: "Wolves have something of a  bogey team at times with even the wins against them being rather boring matches. You'd have to say that Marcus isn't a striker, you need to play him on the left. Hojlund is desperately needed in the team. Onana was solid on his debut.

Wolves reaction

Following the game, we received a message from Chris, a devoted Wolves supporter, on our Facebook page. He shared his thoughts, stating, "We were brilliant throughout the match except for their finishing touches. Despite a summer filled with doubts and pessimism, We outperformed them for significant periods of the game. On another occasion, we could have secured a comfortable victory or at the very least, a draw."

Darren was in the away end, he also gave his thoughts: "Whilst it was a good performance, I am concerned about the lack of quality in the final third."

Tom is also a Wolves fan, he added: "Whilst we looked threatening every time that we went forward, I feel we still at least one striker if we are going to avoid another relegation battle."
