Pressure builds on Ange Postecoglou

Image
Tottenham Hotspur 1 - 2 Leicester City Leicester City halted their seven-match losing streak and climbed out of the relegation zone with a spirited 2-1 comeback victory over Tottenham Hotspur, intensifying the scrutiny on Spurs' head coach, Ange Postecoglou. Author - Greg S Stadium - Tottenham Hotspur Stadium The Foxes, under the management of Ruud van Nistelrooy, were acutely aware that a defeat in north London would have equalled their worst-ever league run. Their concerns deepened when Richarlison, returning to Tottenham's starting lineup, headed the hosts into the lead during the first half. However, the game took a dramatic turn in the opening moments of the second half. Just 57 seconds after the restart, Jamie Vardy brought Leicester level, showcasing his enduring prowess. Shortly thereafter, Bilal El Khannouss curled a sublime shot from just outside the penalty area, putting the visitors ahead. Leicester then displayed resilience, holding firm to leapfrog Wolverhampt...

Scotland; Celtic champions again

Image
Hearts 0 - 2 Celtic Celtic clinched their second successive Scottish Premiership title under Ange Postecoglou as they beat 10-player Hearts 2-0. Despite running away with the title, Celtic didn't have it their own way before they were crowned champions. Joe Hart was made to work inside two minutes from a Lawrence Shankland header, although the assistant referee did flag for offside. It was eventually Kyogo got the title party underway when he knocked the ball in from Reo Hatate's cross after half-time. The Japanese striker was then forced off to be replaced by Hyeon-Gyu Oh who made sure of the victory when he fired in from Aaron Mooy's cross. This win confirmed Celtic's 10th title in 11 seasons, and they can secure a domestic treble if they beat Inverness in the Scottish Cup final on June 3 at Hampden Park. Image
There will be another summer of change at Spurs Ange Postecoglou has been dismissed as Tottenham manager just 16 days after guiding the club to Europa League glory. Author | Greg S Spurs secured their first major trophy in 17 years with a 1-0 win over Manchester United in Bilbao, but the triumph came at the end of a dismal domestic campaign. Despite their European success, Tottenham endured their worst Premier League season to date, finishing 17th after losing 22 of their 38 matches. The Australian had said to fans that "season three is better than season two" as they gathered together  at a victory parade to mark that Europa League triumph. READ MORE | Tottenham news and stories READ MORE | Could this impact Tottenham's transfer plans Despite that, the 59-year-old’s spell in north London came to an end exactly two years after Tottenham confirmed his arrival from Celtic on a four-year deal. Scotland: Celtic lift League Cup

Image
Hibernian 1 - 2 Celtic Let's have a look at how the match unfolded and some of the best reaction Kyogo Furuhashi inspired Celtic to their first trophy under Ange Postecoglou with a compelling Scottish League Cup final victory over Hibernian. The Japanese forward finished smartly to get Celtic level within a minute of them going behind to Paul Hanlon's towering header for Hibs. He was then too quick for Hibs' defenders as he latched on to a quick free-kick to lob Matt Macey and win Celtic the trophy. The Celtic boss was delighted Ange Postecoglou spoke with the media after the match: "I can't guarantee success, but I wanted to give the fans hope and they saw that from the first day. It hasn't been smooth, we have had ups and downs, but I think they saw hope in us. "The players are so resilient. I'm so happy they have had their rewards for it today." đź—Ł Ange Postecoglou on Kyogo: “Good luck trying to keep him out today mate, there was no cha...

Have Everton started their road to recovery?

Image
Everton 3 - 2 Tottenham Hotspur Everton began their road to recovery under returning manager David Moyes with an impressive victory at Goodison Park, piling further pressure on Tottenham's under-fire boss, Ange Postecoglou. Author - Sarah W  Spurs were disjointed and vulnerable for large parts of the game, as a revitalised Everton side – who had only managed three Premier League wins and 15 goals all season before this match – dominated proceedings. The Toffees raced to a well-deserved 3-0 lead by half-time and, despite a late Tottenham fightback, the final scoreline flattered the visitors, failing to capture the gulf in performance between the two teams. With both sides desperate for points, Everton swept Spurs aside in a blistering first half, laying the foundation for a crucial victory that condemned Postecoglou's side to their seventh defeat in 10 league matches. Dominic Calvert-Lewin broke a 1,288-minute Premier League goal drought dating back to September, skillfully ...

Odobert inspires Spurs to last eight

Image
Tottenham Hotspur 3 - 1  AZ Alkmaar (Tottenham won 3-2 on aggregate) Wilson Odobert scored twice to rescue Tottenham Hotspur’s season as they overturned a first-leg deficit to beat AZ Alkmaar and secure a place in the Europa League quarter-finals. Author - Greg S Stadium - Tottenham Hotspur Stadium With Spurs languishing in 13th place in the Premier League and already out of both domestic cups, this competition represents their last opportunity for success this season. Ange Postecoglou’s side had been disappointing in the first leg, losing 1-0 in the Netherlands, but delivered a much-improved performance in front of their home fans. Odobert opened the scoring with his first goal for the club, drilling into the top corner after being picked out in space by Dominic Solanke. Spurs took the aggregate lead early in the second half when James Maddison exchanged passes with Son Heung-min inside the box before curling home a fine finish. However, a lapse in concentration saw AZ claw th...

Scotland: Celtic win at Livingston

Image
Livingston 1 - 3 Celtic Celtic convincingly overcame their Livingston to restore their three-point Scottish Premiership lead, says manager Ange Postecoglou. Captain Callum McGregor missed a penalty before Daizen Maeda headed in the opener from a disputed corner. A Nicky Devlin own goal and James Forrest's fine finish made it 3-0. Andrew Shinnie's close-range reply couldn't deny Celtic a first win at Livingston since 2007. The away support created a fantastic atmosphere throughout the game One Celtic fan told us: "It was a comfortable win. That was something that everyone needed. Onwards and upwards now!" Reaction Livingston manager David Martindale told the media: "I think Celtic were very good and very clinical. I don't think we deserved much more from the game, but with the two decisions leading to goals you feel a little hard done-by. Own goal leaves Tottenham with work to do against Alkmaar

Image
AZ Alkmaar 1 - 0 Tottenham Hotspur Lucas Bergvall's unfortunate own goal condemned Tottenham to a flat and uninspiring defeat in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie against AZ Alkmaar. Author - Greg S Stadium - AFAS Stadion Ange Postecoglou's side offered little in attack, failing to muster a shot on target until the closing stages, and only managing two touches inside AZ's box all evening. The decisive moment came from teenage midfielder Bergvall, who inadvertently diverted Troy Parrott's cross into his own net as he attempted to clear the danger. Spurs had goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario to thank for keeping them in the tie, producing three crucial saves. This included one to deny former Tottenham striker Parrott, who joined AZ for £6.7m last summer. However, Tottenham's hopes of progression took another blow with midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur now suspended for next week's return leg after picking up his third booking of the competition. Postecogl...

Bournemouth deservedly beat Tottenham

Image
Bournemouth  1 - 0 Tottenham Hotspur Bournemouth climbed above Tottenham in the Premier League table after defender Dean Huijsen's solitary goal secured victory at the Vitality Stadium. Author - Greg S Huijsen capitalised on poor marking to nod in Marcus Tavernier's inswinging corner at the back post after just 17 minutes. Huijsen’s goal highlighted Spurs' ongoing struggles with set-pieces, leaving manager Ange Postecoglou shaking his head in frustration on the touchline. Tottenham had started brightly, with Dominic Solanke making his mark on his return to Bournemouth following a £65m summer move. However, the former Cherries striker, greeted with scattered boos from the home fans, saw two early efforts fail to make an impact. After Huijsen’s opener, Spurs struggled to regain control, while Bournemouth came close to doubling their lead through Tavernier and Evanilson before half-time. Postecoglou brought on captain Son Heung-min for Pape Matar Sarr after the break, spa...

Wolves continue revival under new boss

Image
Tottenham Hotspur 2 - 2 Wolves Jorgen Strand Larsen’s late equaliser salvaged a point for Wolves in a chaotic Premier League draw with Tottenham, continuing VĂtor Pereira’s strong start as Wolves manager. Author - Greg S Wolves took an early lead when an unmarked Hwang Hee-chan calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the box, capitalising on a lapse in the Spurs defence at a free-kick. Spurs responded swiftly, with Rodrigo Bentancur nodding in a powerful close-range header from Pedro Porro’s pinpoint corner. Moments later, they were handed a golden opportunity to take the lead when Brennan Johnson was brought down by Andre in the box. However, Wolves keeper JosĂ© Sá guessed correctly, denying Son Heung-min from the spot. The missed penalty didn’t deter Totten ham’s attacking momentum. A slick exchange between Dejan Kulusevski and Johnson in a crowded box ended with Johnson firing a precise low shot into the net to give Spurs the lead. Wolves appoint ex-Porto...

Solanke gave Spurs the lead with a clever finish, lifting the ball over the onrushing Emiliano Martinez from a pinpoint pass by Dejan Kulusevski. Minutes later, Richarlison found Solanke in the box, who calmly slotted it home to put Villa's late resurgence beyond reach. A closer look at what happened at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium Villa had initially taken the lead 32 minutes in, as Morgan Rogers capitalised on Spurs' inability to clear Lucas Digne’s in-swinging corner, netting from their first shot on target. UEL: Spurs start Europa League campaign with a win

Image
Tottenham Hotspur 3 - 0 Qarabag Tottenham kicked off their Europa League campaign with an impressive win against Qarabag, despite being reduced to 10 men just seven minutes into the match. This was great preparation as Spurs will face an important few weeks in different competitions. For this match, there was a 35-minute delay to the start due to various travel disruptions across London. A closer look at what happened Spurs suffered an early setback when defender Radu Dragusin was sent off for a last-man foul on Juninho, who was through on goal. Nevertheless, five minutes later Brennan Johnson found the net, capitalising on Qarabag's sloppy attempt to play out from the back. Dominic Solanke set up the 23-year-old, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner, marking his third goal in as many games. Tottenham doubled their lead in the 52nd minute through Pape Sarr, who controlled a loose ball at the far post before firing it home. Qarabag were awarded a penalty just three...

Author - Greg S Teenage forward Will Lankshear, who had earlier celebrated his maiden senior goal in just his second start for Spurs, was shown a second yellow card and dismissed on the hour mark. By then, Tottenham had already squandered several opportunities, leaving the final scoreline flattering them somewhat, given the hosts' dominant display. Despite the setback, Ange Postecoglou’s side remain well-positioned to progress from the group stage, sitting on nine points from four games, although Galatasaray have now overtaken them in the standings. A closer look at what happened Tottenham’s shaky attempts to play out from the back, coupled with some chaotic defending, made for a difficult evening in a notoriously intimidating atmosphere. The tone was set by Yunus Akgun's sublime sixth-minute strike, a left-foote...

UEL reaction: Ferencvárosi TC 2 - 3 Celtic

Image
Celtic picked up a crucial Europa League victory against Ferencvaros in Budapest. The Glasgow side moved a point behind Real Betis, who were thrashed 4-0 at Bayer Leverkusen, with two games to play in the group. The Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou told BT Sport: "Full credit to the boys. It was three great goals, I thought we could have had a couple more. I'm disappointed at conceding the second goal as I don't think it was a true reflection of how we played tonight. "The fact we can get three goals away from home is because we just go at teams. I still think that is the way forward. It's the kind of team we want to be and I think it's the team our supporters want us to be." One Celtic fan told us: "After some of the appalling performances last season, this campaign has been a breath of fresh air. We are looking superb at times and we could easily progress to the next stage of this competition." Another spoke with great passion about their man...

Pre Season: Spurs secure win at QPR

Image
QPR 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur Yves Bissouma's first goal in Spurs colours and a late strike from Dane Scarlett made it two wins out of two in pre-season. Ange Postecoglou's side secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory at Queens Park Rangers on Saturday afternoon. This was a very entertaining match that both sides would have taken a lot from.  Midfielder Bissouma produced some dazzling footwork to slide home the opener just before half-time. Tottenham then weathered some heavy second-half pressure from the hosts, substitute Scarlett converted Mikey Moore's cross three minutes from time - just moments after his introduction - to make the game safe. Premier League: Summer 2024 news and stories  It was another largely positive afternoon for Spurs at Loftus Road, the only downside being the first-half departure of Lucas Bergvall, who had picked up a knock in the penalty area and was replaced by Dejan Kulusevski as they took no chances over the recent arrival.
