Postecoglou celebrates Europa League success

Nuno departed late on Monday night after a poor start to the campaign, and Forest have moved quickly in their search for a replacement. Postecoglou was seen at the club’s training ground on Tuesday as talks progressed.

The 60-year-old was dismissed by Tottenham at the end of last season after a league campaign that saw them finish 17th. Yet he ended his time in north London by delivering the club’s first trophy in more than 15 years, guiding Spurs to Europa League glory.

Forest, who are currently 10th after three games, brought in Nuno in December 2023 following the departure of Steve Cooper. He steered them clear of relegation despite a points deduction, and last season secured a seventh-place finish, ensuring European football for the first time in three decades. His final match was a 3-0 defeat against West Ham before the international break.

Postecoglou's time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Ange Postecoglou’s spell at Tottenham was one of sharp contrasts. Spurs endured a miserable league campaign last season, losing 22 of their 38 matches and collecting only 38 points to finish 17th, their lowest placing of the Premier League era. They conceded 65 goals, with only Wolves and the relegated clubs Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton faring worse defensively.

Yet Postecoglou delivered a landmark success by guiding Tottenham to a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final, the club’s first major trophy in 17 years. The triumph also secured Champions League football, though it was not enough to save him from the sack, with the club dismissing him 16 days later.

Spurs turned to Thomas Frank as his replacement but acknowledged that Postecoglou would be remembered for producing one of the club’s finest moments, becoming only the third manager to win a European trophy with them.

The Australian had lifted Tottenham to fifth place in his first season and fulfilled his pledge to bring silverware in his second. His attacking philosophy drew admiration early on, though he was often forced to defend his refusal to compromise and had to manage a long list of injuries to key players.
