Nottingham Forest turn to Sean Dyche to save their season

Nottingham Forest have confirmed the appointment of Sean Dyche as their new head coach.

The 54-year-old has signed a deal running until the summer of 2027, becoming Forest’s third permanent manager of the season.

Dyche replaces Ange Postecoglou, who was dismissed just 17 minutes after Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea. Postecoglou’s tenure lasted only 39 days, during which he failed to win any of his eight matches in charge, drawing two and losing six. He had replaced Nuno Espírito Santo, who was sacked after just three games at the start of the campaign.

Forest sit 18th in the Premier League table, with only one win from their opening eight fixtures in what has been a turbulent start to the season.

Dyche’s first match in charge will come on Thursday in the Europa League at home to Porto, before his side travel to Bournemouth in the Premier League on Sunday.

The recruitment process was overseen by Forest’s global head of football, Edu Gaspar, and global technical director, George Syrianos. Former Italy and Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini was also considered for the role, while Fulham’s Marco Silva was among those admired by the club’s hierarchy.

Dyche could be natural fit at The City Ground

Unlike Ange Postecoglou’s brief and ill-fated tenure, the appointment of Sean Dyche at Nottingham Forest appears a far more logical fit. His teams have traditionally favoured a tactical approach closely aligned with the style that Nuno Espírito Santo used to steer Forest into European competition.

Without the benefit of a pre-season to implement his distinct brand of football, Postecoglou found it difficult to impose his methods. A congested fixture list early in his reign left little time for adaptation, and his possession-based philosophy struggled to take hold within a squad accustomed to a more compact and direct approach.

In theory, Dyche’s arrival should bring stability. His pragmatic, organised style mirrors that of Nuno and ought to complement a group of players who last season showed defensive resilience and a capacity to punish opponents on the counter-attack.

Immediate reaction from the club

A statement on the Forest website says: “Nottingham Forest is delighted to confirm the appointment of Sean Dyche as the Club’s new Head Coach, following a thorough recruitment process led by Global Head of Football, Edu Gaspar, and Global Technical Director, George Syrianos.

“The former Forest youth player joins the Club on a contract running until the summer of 2027 and will take charge of his first match on Thursday night as The Reds take on FC Porto in the Europa League.

“Dyche will be joined by his experienced coaching team of Ian Woan and Steve Stone, both former Nottingham Forest players who together made more than 400 appearances for the Reds during the 1990s.

“A respected and experienced Premier League manager, Dyche brings the perfect blend of character, tactical acumen, and proven achievement to guide the Club through its next chapter.”
