The Australian’s departure, just 39 days after his appointment on 9 September, marks the shortest managerial reign in Premier League history.

Postecoglou failed to record a victory during his eight matches in charge, overseeing two draws and six defeats in all competitions.

Forest managed only a single point from his five league games, leaving them 17th in the table and one point clear of the relegation zone.

Postecoglou’s departure leaves Nottingham Forest seeking their third manager of the season, following the dismissal of Nuno EspĂrito Santo just three games into the campaign.

Fulham’s Marco Silva is thought to be among the leading contenders to take over, while former Burnley and Everton manager Sean Dyche is also under consideration.

An unwanted record

Ange Postecoglou’s 39 days in charge have set a new record for the shortest reign of any permanent Premier League manager, surpassing Les Reed’s ill-fated spell at Charlton Athletic.

Reed lasted 40 days in 2006 before being dismissed, having won just one of his eight matches in all competitions.

Sam Allardyce’s brief 30-day stint at Leeds United does not count towards the same record, as he was appointed on an interim basis.

Former Crystal Palace manager Frank de Boer still holds the record for the fewest matches overseen by a permanent Premier League boss, taking charge of just four games at Selhurst Park.

Postecoglou’s tenure at Nottingham Forest lasted five league matches.

Where do Forest go from here?

Postecoglou’s exit leaves Nottingham Forest looking for their third manager of the season, following the decision to dismiss Nuno EspĂrito Santo just three games into the campaign.

Fulham head coach Marco Silva is among those being considered, with several senior figures at the City Ground understood to view the Portuguese as the ideal candidate. Silva previously worked with Forest’s owner Evangelos Marinakis at Olympiacos and has earned plaudits for the way he has established Fulham as a stable Premier League side through an attractive, structured style of football that Forest believe could suit their needs.
