Sheffield United produce best display of the season

EFL: Foxes start season with a win

Image
Leicester City 2 - 1 Coventry City Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall struck two late goals as the relegated Foxes began their life back in the Championship by beating Coventry City. Last season's beaten Championship play-off finalists looked on course for three points when they led through Kyle McFadzean's 47th-minute opener from a corner. The Gus Hamer-inspired Sky Blues also wasted good chances either side of the City skipper's strike. They often looked the better side and really should have made it 2-0. Mark Robins' men were eventually made to pay when Dewsbury-Hall levelled on 77 minutes before being fed by new signing Stephy Mavididi to curl home an 87th-minute winner - and earn victory for new Foxes boss Enzo Maresca, in his first game in charge. Mark Robins will have seen enough from his side to give him positive thoughts and a lot of confidence for the next 45 league matches. Find more news from the English Football League here. FA Cup: United win on penalties

Image
Manchester United 3 - 3 Coventry City Manchester United won 4-2 on penalties  United somehow progressed to the FA Cup final for the second successive season, following a dramatic semi-final victory over Coventry City. The Reds edged past the Sky Blues on penalties after a crazy and eventful 120 minutes to set up a rematch of last year's final, against Manchester City. Following goals from Scott McTominay, Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes, United appeared to be in total and complete control. Despite having a few chances, it did look like this was one match too far for Coventry. However, goals Ellis Simms and O'Hare reduced the deficit and made things very nervy for Ten Hag's side. Then in stoppage time, Haji Wright kept his nerve in stoppage time to score from the spot and send the game into extra time. Many Manchester United fans were furious at this point.  Disgraceful performance from #mufc https://t.co/sibOvrXJB0 pic.twitter.com/dPV06sMrkJ ā€” Jay Dee (@JDESFNew...

Championship: A Friday night classic in Coventry

Image
Coventry City 3 - 2 Oxford United Coventry City's striker Haji Wright secured the Sky Blues' first three Championship points of the season with a dramatic 96th-minute winner against newly promoted Oxford United. Oxford, who had won both of their opening league and cup fixtures, twice came from behind, leaving them hopeful of extending their unbeaten start to the season. After Wrightā€™s initial headed goal, Oxford responded swiftly with an equaliser from Ciaron Brown. When Milan van Ewijk restored Coventryā€™s lead before half-time, Mark Harris brought Oxford level again with a close-range finish in the 55th minute. However, the match took a final twist when Wright, making his first start following an injury-disrupted pre-season, capitalised on Will Vaulks' misplaced backpass. He rounded the goalkeeper to secure Coventry's first home win since early April. A closer look at what happened Coventry initially took the lead when Van Ewijk and Tatsuhiro Sakamoto combined bril...

FA Cup: Youngsters shine as United win the cup

Image
Manchester City 1 - 2 Manchester United Manchester Unitedā€™s victory stopped Premier League champions City from claiming a second consecutive domestic double. United's win was forged through an impressive first-half performance that saw goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo. Garnacho capitalised on a mix-up between City goalkeeper Stefan Ortega and defender Josko Gvardiol, leaving him with an open goal to score half an hour in. Nine minutes later, Mainoo capped off a sweeping move with a composed finish following a delicate touch from Bruno Fernandes. City inevitably ramped up the pressure in the second half, with Erling Haaland hitting the post, United keeper Andre Onana making a superb save from Kyle Walker, and Julian Alvarez missing a golden opportunity. City substitute Jeremy Doku pulled one back with four minutes remaining, but Ten Hag's side held firm to secure a famous victory and  clinch their 13th FA Cup, their first since 2016. Ipswich comfortably move into fifth round

Image
Coventry City 1 - 4 Ipswich Town Ipswich Town cruised into the FA Cup fifth round with a dominant display, easing past Frank Lampardā€™s Coventry City. Author - Marcus Stadium - The Coventry Building Society Arena Boss Kieran McKenna opted for a completely rotated XI against their Championship opponents, but the Tractor Boysā€™ second-string side showed no signs of disruption as they secured a convincing victory. They got off to the perfect start, winning a penalty just 22 seconds in, which George Hirst calmly dispatched. Coventry responded quickly through Joel Latibeaudiere, but Ipswich soon regained control. Jack Clarke struck twice before half-time, and January signing Jaden Philogene, formerly of Aston Villa, netted his first goal for the club to put the tie beyond doubt. Manchester United: 23/24 Season Review

Image
Let's explore Manchester United's 2023/2024 season. It was a campaign full of drama. There was a lot of controversy throughout, but it finished with glory as they beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley.  After being eliminated from the EFL Cup in the fourth round by the previous season's finalists, Newcastle United, they also experienced their worst performance in the Champions League group stage. They then finished in 8th position, their lowest ever place in the Premier League era.  We will now experience some of those key reports and stories from the season. The season started with a 1-0 win over Wolves. In this match, Raphael Varane secured the decisive goal with just 14 minutes remaining, propelling Manchester United to a somewhat lucky victory. It wasn't a great performance though and perhaps a sign of things to come. A few weeks later, they lost 3 - 1 at home to Brighton. After this match, we spoke to Liam, a United Season Ticket holder. He said: ...

Amorim saves greatest Sporting victory until near the end

Image
Sporting 4 - 1 Manchester City New Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim marked his final home game with Sporting by delivering one of his greatest triumphs, inflicting a third straight defeat on Manchester City. Author - Macca This was Cityā€™s heaviest loss since September 2020 and only the second time Pep Guardiola has suffered three consecutive defeats in a single season during his trophy-filled tenure. To add to Cityā€™s misery, star forward Erling Haaland smashed a second-half penalty against the crossbar. Sportingā€™s own Scandinavian star, Viktor Gyƶkeres, played a leading role with a fantastic hat-trick. He levelled Phil Fodenā€™s early opener in the 38th minute, then held his nerve to score twice more from the spot in the second half. The first penalty followed a disastrous start to the second half for City, as Sporting took the lead just seconds after the restart when Maximiliano AraĆŗjo latched onto a through ball and struck a precise shot into the corner. Image
Bristol City 2 - 1 Norwich City  Bristol City climbed into the Championship play-off places with a hard-fought win over Norwich City, whose promotion hopes are fading fast. Author - Liam Smith Mark Sykes put the Robins ahead with a composed finish early on, before Nahki Wells doubled their lead after capitalising on a defensive error from the visitors. The win moves Bristol City up to fifth, leapfrogging Coventry and West Brom, who both play on Saturday. EFL: Another twist in the promotion race

Image
Leicester City 1 - 1 Ipswich Town Jeremy Sarmiento scored a late equaliser against Championship leaders Leicester City at the King Power Stadium and guided his Ipswich team back into the coveted automatic promotion spots. Initially, Leicester seemed on the verge of extending their lead by 10 points , courtesy of an own goal by Leif Davis in the first half. The second half had more excitement, featuring Foxes goalkeeper Mads Hermansen's spectacular save from Wes Burns and Kasey McAteer's valiant effort cleared off the line at the other end. When Hermansen could only parry a Massimo Luongo shot in the area, Brighton loanee Sarmiento seized the opportunity, swiftly scoring a shot that eluded the Danish goalkeeper. This marked the second time in four weeks that Ipswich snatched a late draw against Leicester, following a similar feat on Boxing Day at Portman Road. The draw this time elevated Ipswich above Southampton, reclaiming second place, while Leicester maintained a seven-poi...

Championship: Hull City produce astonishing second-half turnaround

Image
Stoke City 1 - 3 Hull City Hull City staged a remarkable second-half comeback, spoiling Narcis Pelach's first match as Stoke City manager and securing Tim Walterā€™s first win as Tigers boss on his seventh attempt. Stoke appeared to be cruising towards a comfortable victory, leading 1-0 at half-time courtesy of Ben Wilmotā€™s 30th-minute header. However, Kasey Palmer sparked Hullā€™s revival with a 63rd-minute equaliser, heading in the rebound after his penalty was saved by Viktor Johansson. This was the first of three Tigers goals in a 16-minute blitz. Substitute Regan Slater capitalised on a Wilmot mistake to fire in a powerful shot from 18 yards in the 77th minute. Just two minutes later, Palmer's weak shot took a fortuitous deflection off Wilmotā€™s calf and slipped through Johanssonā€™s legs to make it 3-1. FA Cup: United and Liverpool play out a classic

Image
Manchester United 4 - 3 Liverpool Manchester United secured their spot in the FA Cup semi-final after a dramatic 4-3 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford. Old Trafford erupted.  Liverpool fought back hard , and just before halftime, they managed to sneak in a couple of goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah, putting them at half-time. The second half was tense, with both teams hunting for that next crucial goal. It wasn't until the home side made some attacking changes, thanks to Ten Hag's tactical moves, that the home side started to put some pressure. They finally found the equaliser. Antony, coming off the bench, save...

Kieffer Moore scored the first goal of the match in the first half, but Haji Wright's 19th goal of the season cancelled it out.  However, Cameron Burgess' scrambled goal in the 69th minute put Ipswich three points clear of third-placed Leeds United. Rooney departs Plymouth after poor run of form

Image
What next for an English football legend? Head coach Wayne Rooney has parted ways with Championship strugglers Plymouth Argyle by mutual consent. Author - Peter Grainger The video below shows Rooneyā€™s reaction after a recent defeat against Norwich City. The 39-year-old former England captain managed only four league victories while suffering 13 defeats in 23 Championship matches since taking charge of the Pilgrims in May. His departure leaves the club rooted to the bottom of the table. Rooney arrived at Home Park just four months after being sacked by Birmingham City, where his short 83-day tenure saw nine defeats in 15 games. Sunday's 2-0 loss to Oxford United , which extended Plymouth's winless run to nine matches, was met with boos from the crowd. It marked their sixth defeat in that run, which began in early November. Under Rooneyā€™s leadership, Plymouth have struggled at both ends of the pitch. Theyā€™ve scored the joint-fewest goals in the Championship and conceded mor...
