The top EFL talent. Who has a big future ahead of them?

This article will explore some of the top talent in the English Football League

Are there any players in the Championship, League One or League Two that could be soon signed by a Premier League side?

The leagues below the Premier League are arguably the perfect breeding ground for England's top talent.

Top EFL Talent 2023

Alex Scott - Bristol City

After an impressive breakthrough season in 2021-22, this is a player hoping for even bigger things he looks to carry on establishing himself among the country’s top talent. He starred for Nigel Pearson’s Bristol City side last season and launched himself onto the international stage by helping England win the Under-19s European Championship.

In the 2021/2022 season, only Callum Doyle (3,109) played more league minutes across the top four tiers in England than Scott (2,762) while aged 18 or younger.

Ryan Giles - Middlesbrough

The Wolverhampton Wanderers academy graduate is only 22. However,  he’s already played 115 senior career games over three seasons across different loan spells. In previous loan spells, he had different levels if success in the Championship. He helped Coventry City stabilise at the level in 2020-21 (no easy task) before becoming an assist king at Cardiff City in 2021-22.

One Cardiff fan said: "I really wish he was still with us, to be honest."

It will be interesting to see what happens with his long-term future. Will he return to Wolves or could he stay at Boro?

Gabriel Sara - Norwich City

Despite budget constraints at the club, the Norfolk club have smashed their transfer record to sign Gabriel Sara from São Paulo. The player was highly rated in Brazil. His never say die attitude could make him a huge star at Carrow Road.

He scored his first goal for Norwich in a 3-2 loss to PNE before scoring again three weeks later in a 3-1 win against Stoke City at Carrow Road.

Jason Knight - Derby County

He has played over 100 times for Derby County in often difficult circumstances. Knight made his first team debut on 5 August 2019 in a 2–1 win away at Huddersfield Town.

On 16 January 2021, he was handed his first captaincy for Derby County, in Wayne Rooney's first game as coach. Throughout this season, he has often been deployed as a right-wing back, showing his versatility as a player.

You can two of his eleven career goals in the video below.

Knight keeps being linked with a move to the Premier League, could that happen this season or in the summer?

Which players have made the move in recent years?

Many players have made the potentially difficult move from the EFL to the Premier League. One recent example was Dan James. He moved from Swansea City to Manchester United. Despite scoring on his debut, he struggled to settle before eventually moving to Leeds then Fulham.

In May 2007, Gareth Bale moved Tottenham Hotspur from then EFL side Southampton. Spurs spent an initial £5 million for the player, potentially rising to £10 million based on appearances and success. This was a definite success.
