FA Cup: United win on penalties

 Manchester United 3 - 3 Coventry City

Manchester United won 4-2 on penalties

United somehow progressed to the FA Cup final for the second successive season, following a dramatic semi-final victory over Coventry City.

MUFC v Coventry FA Cup semi final - 1

The Reds edged past the Sky Blues on penalties after a crazy and eventful 120 minutes to set up a rematch of last year's final, against Manchester City.

Following goals from Scott McTominay, Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes, United appeared to be in total and complete control. Despite having a few chances, it did look like this was one match too far for Coventry. However, goals Ellis Simms and O'Hare reduced the deficit and made things very nervy for Ten Hag's side. Then in stoppage time, Haji Wright kept his nerve in stoppage time to score from the spot and send the game into extra time.

Many Manchester United fans were furious at this point.

There was more drama to come. In the last minute of extra time, Coventry fans thought they had won it. However, VAR correctly judge that a Sky Blues player was offside in the build up. To penalties it then went.

Coventry had the advantage after Casemiro missed for United and they scored their first. However, Andre Onana managed to deny Callum O'Hare and unsettled Ben Sheaf with the Coventry captain missing- allowing Rasmus Hojlund to win it and send United to a final.

Was this undeserved? The narrative had clearly been written but United just about held their nerve during penalties. They were in total control for 70 minutes until the manager Ten Hag changed things tactically.

This year's showpiece event under the arch is set to take place on Saturday 25 May.

You can watch some of the game's key moments in the video below. The footage is from the official Emirates FA Cup YouTube account.

More reaction to a dramatic Sunday afternoon at Wembley

Liam, a Manchester United Season Ticket holder, told us: "For 70 minutes, we were in total control. After that, the performance was a disgrace. The players probably didn't deserve to win it. Ultimately, we managed to qualify for the final. We'll need a miracle to win that match against Manchester City."

Darren, another United fan, added: "We got away with that one. Despite being in charge of the match, it always felt like we had a collapse in us. That being said, we still have something to play for this season now. Onwards and upwards, I suppose."

Josh watched the match on TV, he added: "The mentality of this team is just so wrong. That for me comes from the manager. I never like to see a man lose his job but we need a change now. All that being said, three domestic finals in two seasons is quite impressive. Bizarrely, I think we can win the final."
