Bobby Thomas struck six minutes from time at Ewood Park to earn Coventry City a point at Blackburn and confirm their return to the Premier League after a 25-year absence, sparking scenes of celebration among the travelling support.

The defender etched his name into Sky Blues folklore, rising to head home in front of the away end and set off jubilant scenes. His name rang around the ground as Coventry completed a journey that had once taken them as far down as League Two, with Frank Lampard guiding them back to the top flight.

Thomas’s late intervention was harsh on Blackburn, who had led through Ryoya Morishita and were good value for it before the Championship leaders responded with the goal that secured the point required for promotion.

For Rovers, the draw moved them five points clear of the relegation zone, albeit having played two games more than third-from-bottom Oxford United.

At the final whistle, Lampard, the former England and Chelsea midfielder, stepped on to the pitch to mark what ranks as Coventry’s most significant moment since their FA Cup triumph in 1987. The players made their way to the Darwen End, celebrating with supporters while holding aloft promotion banners.

A closer analysis of what happened

There had been a sense among the away following that this outcome was only a matter of time, yet Blackburn made the sharper start. Carl Rushworth produced a fine save to deny Yuki Ohashi’s header from Ryan Alebiosu’s cross.

The same combination threatened again soon after, with Ohashi striking the bar from Alebiosu’s delivery, although referee Lewis Smith had already penalised a push. Morishita also saw an effort blocked as Rovers pressed.

Coventry, by contrast, struggled to find rhythm, their only notable effort in the first half a stabbed attempt from Ephron Mason-Clark that drifted wide of the far post.

The breakthrough arrived nine minutes into the second half. Alebiosu’s cross deflected into the path of Morishita, who finished via a touch off Thomas to give Blackburn a deserved lead.

Coventry gradually built pressure and thought they had drawn level when Jack Rudoni glanced a header in off the post, only for the offside flag to cut short celebrations following Haji Wright’s involvement.

They continued to push, however, and were rewarded in the 84th minute when Victor Torp delivered a free-kick from the right and Thomas rose to head in from close range, sealing both the point and promotion.
