ECQ: Kane breaks England record in Italy

Image
Italy 1 - 2 England Harry Kane became England's record goalscorer as they opened their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign with an away win against Italy. Kane wrote his name into the history books in the 44th minute when he beat Gianluigi Donnarumma from the penalty spot for his 54th England goal. Declan Rice had earlier given England an early lead when he scored from close range after Kane's shot was blocked before the captain put his name in the record books. Italy whistled off at half-time in their first international in Naples for a decade, improved as England became sloppy. England dominated the first half but struggled in the second. Southgate's side were in total control during the first 45 minutes. The only negative was a dreadful miss by Jack Grealish that would have made it 3-0. It would have allowed England to avoid the anxious second half.  The away side then conceded control after the break and Italy looked like more of the side that had become European champio

Gareth Southgate's England have arrived in Germany, facing a crucial test to determine if they are genuine contenders or simply a team that falters when it matters most. Southgate’s tenure – whether it concludes at the end of Euro 2024 or continues beyond – should always be assessed against the chaos he inherited.  Appointed permanently in November 2016, Southgate has since led England to the 2018 World Cup semi-finals, the Euro 2020 final, and the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals. UCL: Exciting first leg leaves things all to play for

Bayern Munich 2 - 2 Real Madrid It was an intriguing and exciting first leg in Germany After soaking up immense Manchester City pressure in their quarter-final second leg, but eventually progressing to the semi-finals , Real Madrid were on the back foot again from the very beginning in Bavaria as Bayern created a succession of chances in the opening exchanges. Real Madrid's visiting goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, who saved two penalties in the quarter-final shoot-out against City denied Leroy Sané in the first minute with a smart save using his left leg. Sané was constantly involved in Bayern's attacks and his clever back-heel, after a dart into the middle from the right wing, found Harry Kane in the area . However, the striker's curling shot was too close to the goalkeeper. This Bayern duo teamed up again a minute after their previous attempt. This time, Harry Kane played a well-measured pass from just inside the Real Madrid half to find Sané on the left side of the goal. H

Friendly: England triumph over old rivals

Image
Scotland 1 - 3 England In a raucous Hampden Park friendly, England continued their modern-day superiority over Scotland.  Scots last won this fixture in 1999, but hopes of a 42nd win appeared ominously faint as Phil Foden's opener silenced the stadium before Jude Bellingham added a second. A shaken Scotland eventually awoke the home crowd as Harry Maguire sent Andy Robertson's cross screeching beyond Aaron Ramsdale. A mesmerizing Bellingham assist enabled Harry Kane to score England's third as a result of England's classy play and intricate movement. Top of their European Championship qualifying group with five wins from five and facing an England team held by Ukraine on Saturday , Steve Clarke spoke before the match about the desire to see how much his team had narrowed the gap between themselves and England. UCL: Bayern and United play out a classic

Premier League: Keane stunner boosts Everton survival hopes

Image
Everton 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur For the best part of an hour, this was a poor match as both Everton and Spurs struggled to create any clear-cut opportunities in the final third. The last thirty minutes was very different. Harry Kane was soon in the thick of the action when he challenged Demarai Gray on the halfway line, an incident to which Doucoure took exception. A few pushes were exchanged before the Everton midfielder put his hand into the face of Kane. The England captain went tumbling to the turf and referee David Coote brandished a straight red.
